MacVittie Progress

Few people have seen him much in practice, other than throwing in drills. Even reporters are locked out of scrimmages in practices.
But, reporters' discussions with coaches indicate that they remain as high on his potential after seeing him in practice this year as they did as a recruit. Its all potential of course, but at least the coaches think it is there.

will there truly be a battle next year between Schneider (the UCF transfer) and MacVittie for the starting job, or is it pretty much MacVittie's to lose?

As someone who has coached youth sports for many years, I find it really hard to believe that any coach will ever play the lesser of two players. Coaches want to win. Period. Their entire careers are dependent on winning, and they will play the players who will help them win today.
BTW, Narduzzi is known for not making promises. Recruits constantly say that he they respect his straight-forward honesty, that he tells even his highest recruits that they are going to have to compete for playing time. So even if there are coaches who make playing time promises when recruiting, I don't think we should include Narduzzi in that group.

Yes, I noticed his size when the team was running out vs. GT! He has filled out and looks the size of Big Ben.
Big Ben huh???

Let's not go crazy there, Big Ben is Byron leftwichlike. Macvittie is a kid in comparison. No doubt he will pack the strength on but let's hope he keeps the speed, I really think the offense will be unstoppable with a speed option on Qb

Agree with the speed @ QB thing. Defenses will tire covering the horizontal game and then the inside pounding.

i have no idea if he will start next year, who knows maybe the staff brings in a grad transfer.

he's played 1 year of hs ball at qb. if he does start next year, he will have a big learning curve.

Yes, size wise. For a 19 year old he is a large QB. I can see him at 6'5" / 235-240 before he leaves PITT and he can run. Can you imagine a tall QB that can run in Canada's O???

I am just trying to get some intel on his play calling and how he runs the O in practice

9 - your asking for intel, nobody has it. nobody is allowed to watch practice. but you already knew that.

MacVittie's future depends on how coachable he is. He certainly has the size and all the tools, from the video I've seen.

I think we underestimate how tough it is to run these jet sweep plays - the timing must be precise and there can't be any indecision about whether to hand off or not to the jet sweeper. I kind of worry about that side of it; especially the decision-making of an inexperienced QB.

As far as our passing offense, obviously a freshman QB is going to throw more INTs than NP, but he may also hit some of the passes that NP is missing. And NP is not seeing some open guys, just like a freshman will do. With the experience gained by our WRs this season, my guess is that the passing side will be about a wash, at worst, next season if MacVittie starts. More bad plays, but more big plays too.

Go Pitt.

I wish I could answer ya. Last I heard was preseason he was supposedly looking very good. I'm excited about him playing next year, and agree if he isn't starting next year we might have a fair to good prospect. I suspect if he is all we think he could be he wins the job next year.

intriguing prospect.. 4.5 is nice, even if it's the mythical 4.5 that is so commonly used on boards like this or legit, he is still very fast for a QB. He looked rail thin to me but maybe he is putting on that freshman 15.. Hope he can throw a deep ball, I haven't seen a Pitt QB throw a deep ball since Stull's senior year..

If MacVittie does play next season, the TV camera is going to love showing his mom because she is pretty attractive. His father's Ivy League education paid off in more ways than one.
