You have to have some attitude as a DB but when you're a whipping post out there you shouldn't be running your mouth on the rare occasion you do make a play let alone when the other guy just drops the ball.
Hey these guys made some big plays against the 2nd best team in the country last week. For all the crap they took all season let them have some fun and confidence in their step if they are doing well this week
having fun is different from showboating. I am tired of people who don't see that there is a difference between celebrating and showboating/trash talking. That is all you see in the NFL now, these guys showboating when they haven't even done anything special.

All I know is if you're gonna run your mouth you'd better back it up. Maddox is chipping at a guy who had a couple easycatches on him then dropped one that hit him in the facemask. Keep your mouth shut and play ball.
As for last week, the D made some huge plays but gave up an ACC record of nearly 600 passing yards, they are one of the bottom 3 pass defenses out of the 127 FBS programs, so I don't think they've earned the right to say $hit to anyone.

exactly agree on all counts. I blame coaches for not cracking down on this crap, in some cases I am sure coaches encourage it

That is the coaches' job and obviously from what I see in both the NFL and college these coaches at best don't care how these players act and at worst encourage them to act like idiots out on the field.
I also wonder if these coaches tell the db's to hold and grab the receivers on every play, figuring the refs won't call it on every pass play. Because it isn't just the Pitt db's who do this; seems like the new "fad" is for the corners to grab the receiver's arm so he can't go up and catch the ball with both hands. well I am not a conservative I just want to see the game played the right way (or at least give an honest attempt to play it the right way) and to display proper sportsmanship during the game. It really isn't too much to ask.

actually when I posted "the right way" I was referring to the dbacks grabbing and holding on every pass play, going on the assumption that the officials won't call interference on every play. That is NOT playing the right way, at least in my opinion.
Lambert didn't "showboat" but he was a dirty player, as were many of the Steelers of that era

Well there's this Bob, since you're stereotyping and making unfounded assumptions: I'm far from conservative, I actually have no problem personally with the statement that Kaepernick is trying to make, and I don't own a gun of any sort, let alone an assault rifle. But I did play a lot of football in my previous life, including at the college level, and I have certain beliefs from those days that I carry with me today. One of them is that if you're getting your ass kicked, you have no business running your mouth. Maddox has been an absolute disgrace as a cover corner all year. That's just calling it like it is. Any time we've played a team with good size and athleticism on the outside, he and his buddy Lewis have been flat out embarrassed in a way that I'm not sure I've ever witnessed in all my years as a football participant and/or fan. Just last week, an all-time ACC record in passing yards against. That takes a special kind of ineptitude from your DBs to allow that to happen.
So this week, Maddox was matched up most plays with TJ Rahming, a 5'9, 170 pound WR for Duke. I'm sure Maddox was relieved to finally cover someone who is about his size. Rahming caught the first 6 balls thrown to him in the first half, including one that went for about 45 yards. On the 6th one, a 5 yard completion to the sideline, Maddox shoved him out of bounds then got right in his face, jabbering away. On the next play, Rahming beat Maddox on a quick slant but the ball went right through his hands and hit him in the facemask. Maddox celebrated and talked trash as though he just made a play, when in reality he was beat--again. That's the moment when i posted the OP in this thread. What Maddox did wasn't celebrating and showing enthusiasm, it was being a punk. If you have had the kind of season Maddox has had, you keep your mouth shut and try to do your job. If you do make a play, as he did on just one occasion last week, celebrate all you want. But don't trash talk the opposing player when you've been on the ass end of so many big completions all season, and when he;s having his way with you at the moment, and when the other team is picking on you because they know you're weak. When I see that kind of stuff, in any game, out of any player, it pisses me off. Guys celebrating good plays has never bothered me, never will bother me. Trash talking doesn't bother me much if it's in the right context. But talking trash without backing it up has always bothered me. Shut your mouth and try to make a play. If and when you do make that play, celebrate it any way you want.

Now I will make a comment to you because you directed one to me, I've spent my life playing sports as well and guys need to find any edge they can. I played a certain way on the basketball court and walked the line of dirty and competitive because i wasnt as athletic as other guys. My take is its tough to play college football at this level and when you are undersized like Maddox you need a nasty edge. The kid is a great teammate and is constantly doing things for kids and the community when not playing. I am ok with a little shit talking especially since he's been hearing it from others all year. We won 56-14 yesterday I think bitching about Maddox is silly.

-Just a hunch. Pitt will never play 4 of the top 5 highest rated qb's entering the NFL draft again in the next 100 years in a single season like we just played this season. Add in Evans and its 5 of the top 10 in the entire country. It will never happen again. This year was a complete fluke of a schedule facing elite qb and wr talent when we were at an all time low in the secondary.
