I know it has been mentioned casually by some but it is blatantly obvious to me that this defense plays with more aggression and speed than last year's with virtually the same players. Typically there is a learning curve the first year of a new scheme but the genius of Narduzzi and Conklin is that they recognize that the less kids think, the more they fly around and play the game. Even though high school, where I coach, is obviously a different level of football, it is the same idea; the more you have to think, the less time you have to react and attack.
I have personally over-schemed in the past, trying to outsmart opponents or prove that my guys could carry out a complex scheme, but the truth is, the good coaches are the ones that can swallow their pride and let their athletes play. Folks, we have a head coach who is confident enough in his scheme that he doesn't try to impress with confusing nuances, but rather physical, fast football. Have they perfected it yet, no. But they are buying in, and personally, as a coach and a fan of physical football, I love watching it. If I am a recruit, I want to play for a guy that will let me just play football. To quote Full Metal Jacket, these are great times we're livin' in, bros. Enjoy what you are seeing, and be excited that it's only going to get better. Hail to Pitt!!!
