Makes sense and I believe this is what will happen

How to separate from Capel now:
Be honest with him. The chances he coaches beyond next year are low. So he’ll earn his salary ~$3M for next year and his buyout ~$5M.
Offer him ~$8M NOW to resign and stop the bleeding at Pitt and let him go on with his life.

Here's the problem with this. Capel is owed $15 million. And he's a competitor. He knows Pitt is his last P6 job so he can either take the $8 million now and go coach an HBCU or give it ONE LAST SHOT next season and get the same $8 million. The only difference is working vs not working but selling this to a basketball coach as "hey you can get the same money to watch Netflix on the couch," doesn't resonate like it would someone who has a regular job. These guys are competitors. I don't think there's any way he'd take $8 million. It would probably have to be around $12 million or so.

Or, even though the Duke version of Alvarez/Chryst/Pitt ‘look , I got a guy here’ plan failed, end up doing what he’s probably meant to do. Go back to his alma mater and try and sign 4 and 5 star recruits there for the new hc.

You are 100% right , JC is a driven competitor raised in a coaching family , quitting is not an option . He’s already financially set for life , money will not be his motivating factor his pride is what’s at stake and this is his last big gig if he fails , he’s not willingly walking away for a payday .

We're all competitors in the game of life.

Jeff should spare the fans of himself and his staff, who suck at their jobs.

A fresh start for the sake of Pitt hoops is needed. If Capel doesn't see it then all the more frustrating how 2022-23 will be another gigantic waste. I hope the school enjoys all the empty seats.

I am sure Capel believes that if Hugley and the others come back and he gets a few good grad transfers, he's going to the NCAAT. We can laugh at that but these guys believe in themselves. The year without working "reward" is not an incentive. Capel thinks he can get to the NCAAT and stay at Pitt or possibly parlay his tournament run into a good mid-major job or A10/American-ish job.

You can't disregard the possibility that Capel is brought back because the administration believes he can still turn it around. The fat lady may be warming up but she hasn't started singing yet.

What's going to happen is Capel will be coaching next season. The real question is what would it take for him to keep his job beyond that? I would hate to see modest improvement next season prevent Lyke from doing what everyone knows she needs to do as soon as practicable.

Scenarios where he is the 23-24 coach

a) NCAA Tournament

b) NIT but Hugley plus most key players return making it very reasonable to believe the 2024 NCAAT is a good possibility

c) Top 20 recruiting class (almost regardless of 2022-23 team performance). Even if we suck next year, if he has one of Pitt's best ever recruiting classes lined up, I don't think you can pay him to NOT coach it. Willard/Chambers

d) Perhaps like a 17-14/16-15 season with SOME key returners and a good but not great recruiting class. This one is debatable

If the Administration believes this, then they should ALL be fired.. It would make them as Dumb and Incompetent as you..

How exactly do you know what is going through Capel’s mind?

I don't. But these guys are extreme competitors. They don't like to quit. Now, if Hugley and the others all leave and he is starting at 0-20 then yea, I could see him seeing the quitting option and the $8 million as being better than the embarrassment of 0-20.

What makes you guys think that someone with
less of a recruiting background then capel is going to recruit any better, he has recruited some really good 5 star players at duke, I know that duke is duke, and even with a different HC here at Pitt , Pitt is still Pitt

He'd have to get to the NCAAT next year, NIT minimum, and win 20+ games to be back beyond next year. That isn't even a remote possibility regardless of who comes back. His recruiting is horrendous and he's a terrible coach. That isn't going to change overnight. He's not a head coach at any level.

We know he'll be here next year. All that means is that the fans won't be.

Well, its hard to recruit any worse. That said, programs cannot be built and relied upon by recruiting HS players anymore. 50% eventually transfer. Its probably more important to do well in the transfer market.

That's just another reason fans won't be back to these games. Who can root for players that will probably not be around for more than a year? They could tarp the entire upper levels of The Pete and there still would be more than half empty seats if this continues.

How can he have no recruits coming in? That is crazy. My 3 season tickets are not being renewed. It will be my first year without seats at the Pete.

Lots of "extreme competitors" have suddenly decided to take a nice payday to "spend more time with their family"

Can't say I blame them. When you get your priorities in order, you find that being with your family is a lot more important than winning basketball games. Or in the case of Capel, losing them.

Yes, I think the free transfer rule, which is the right thing to do for the kids, will be almost catastrophic for the sport long-term. Its paying customers will not know who is on a team from year to year. As somone pointed out, college basketball has essentially become pick-up ball. Every year, go and and pick up a new team. The days of getting a recruiting class and watching those players progress through the years is over.

It's surprising more people haven't quit coaching or playing pro sports early, considering how huge and life changing the payday$ at the highest level have become. Probably the stigma of being called lazy or a quitter.

they quit every year in February....Seriously though, Capel just doesn't look like his heart is in it anymore. If he stays, it's for the money because he knows he isn't making this much money annually again. His next gig will be assistant coach pay. Maybe he can come up with a family reason that he needs to go back to NC, so it doesn't look like he was quit or that he was fired. H2P

He’s made so much money that his next job money isn’t a factor.

He doesn’t willingly walk away .
