Making trip to Va/Pitt game

This was years ago at the infamous Wanny onside kick to start the game but we parked on the other side of town across from UVA hospital and made a longer trek across campus. Gave us the opportunity to see the campus before kickoff. We ate at the deli below and it was one of the better sandwiches I've had. Overall made for a very pleasant day (until kickoff).

Also if you're a history buff, Monticello is fantastic. Though it gets VERY crowded on Saturdays in the fall. Might even be too late to get tickets for the tour.

Have fun. Hopefully the outcome of the game will be better than when I visited.

i know TD, the other TD, Dion Lewis and a bunch of others live kinda near to it, maybe they can give the insight

I go to UVa about 5 or 6 times a year for work. I was just there a month ago, and had mega construction going on inside the campus area. Hopefully it is over now. There arent a bunch of hotels in the area, so if you dont have one, you might be outta luck. I am not going to the game this year, as I just spent the past 2 weeks in DC for work and not headed back again, too much traveling.

any info you could share?

If you do not already have a hotel in downtown Charlottesville, you are likely screwed--[there are only a few and they are expensive and have been booked for months]. I am staying at the Graduate Charlottesville, which is a first since I was unable to get into the Omni [where I normally stay]. The town itself as it borders the UVA campus is very small town and college oriented--aptly named University Avenue. There is practically no parking anywhere close to the stadium [as it is nestled in and among University buildings] for the general public. I would park in town, and make the relatively long walk across campus through academic buildings, etc. to get to the stadium. If you are not going to the Alumni Association pre-game event, I would make one of the bars on University my pregame headquarters. Last few times I believe the place I drank/ate was called the Trinity Irish Pub? People are friendly and will be happy to offer assistance or advice if asked. UVA puts visitors in the upper deck of the stadium--which is not my fave location, but the stadium is not as cramped as the one at UNC.

There are also plenty of bars and restaurants located on Main Street in the historic Downtown Mall area [although oddly hardly have any televisions if you are interested in catching other college football games after ours concludes. The Downtown Mall also has some interesting shopping. It begins close to the Omni Charlottesville. There are parking garages or on street parking if you are lucky or willing to walk a few blocks. The C&O Restaurant was the best meal I've had in Charlottesville--and I have been down for everyone of Pitt's visits. Bluegrass Grill has been my favorite breakfast/brunch spot. Safe travels...it is not a bad place for an away football game weekend. Hail to Pitt!

Years ago we stopped in Charlottesville for a day on the way home from summer vacation with our kids who were young at the time. Looked on a map and saw that there was a way back to 79 heading north that appeared way closer than heading back to the interstate and around DC. What an experience. Up and down at least 5 major, curvy mountains. Our oldest got car sick so we had to stop at a small town at the base of one of the mountains. Walk into a store and right by the cash register is a huge display of dramamine. Good times.

If you have an extra day.....i would

Barboursville vineyard

Great restaurants in town:

Mas spanish tapas
Now and zen

Also....you have...

Carters mountain orchard (great if you have kids for a couple hours and close to monticello) great views

There's a ton to do around UVA. It is a great weekend getaway.

There are great historic sites including three presidential estates: the before mentioned Monticello and Jame's Monroe's Ash Lawn-Highland are within 15 mins of town; James Madison's Montpelier is about 30-40 mins away. Woodrow Wilson's Presidential Library is about 40 mins outside of town.

There are also a bunch of wineries and cideries all around Charlottesville. The cideries I've been to are pretty family friendly. Many within a 30 min radius or so if you want to get out of the actual town some.

If you have an extra day, I'd recommend taking in a piece of the Skyline Drive. Leafs should be in full Fall colors and it will be beautiful. Also, Luray Caverns are magnificent. On the Skyline Drive most of the sections are about 35 miles or so. Expect to stop to gaze and take pictures often so you better schedule at least 2 hours per section that you plan to drive (a section being an entrance unto the road to the next place to exit the road).

Went to law school at UVA and loved it. The fans will be polite and well-behaved, particularly compared to the WVU and PSU experiences that you may be familiar with.

You're likely screwed in getting a hotel anywhere near the game. There really aren't many near campus or the downtown mall and they're not big. People book hotels for graduation almost a year in advance. You could try something on Highway 29 but it won't be within walking distance to anything fun. You also might try VRBO or AirBnB although I'm not sure what the selection would be like.

As others have mentioned, Scott Stadium is nestled in the center of campus and there is no parking. Tailgates are also very small - people often tailgate at the Law School because it has a huge parking lot and then take buses over. I would recommend getting breakfast at Bodo's bagels, pregaming on the Corner (i.e., University Ave) and then walking across grounds to Scott Stadium. The main part of grounds was built in the early 1800s and is spectacular - make sure you check out the Rotunda (it was just redone and is hard to miss). At night, go out on the Downtown Mall. Try to get a reservation at C&O or Zocalo and then head to Commonwealth Skybar for drinks.

If you want to spend the weekend, do Skyline Drive and one of the several good vineyards.

It's really one of my favorite places. You're going to enjoy yourself.
