one will notice all quick throws and many runs by the QB. Many will say that Coach wants to run a Michigan State offense but I believe Narduzzi likes to keep teams unbalanced and that is NOT for a traditional drop back QB.

So Manny Stocker as a High School Senior playing at a high level passed for 2000 yards, 20 TD passes and 10 Rushing TDs. That's kind of the blueprint for where we are going over the next few years. Nate is a pretty sneaky quick runner, Manny ( I believe will be used to pass and run ).

Since race has come up in the last few days with coaching, I' m just going to say I'm really been disappointed for 35 years that Pitt has not made it a priority that we don't have a flat out track athlete as a QB. To be more direct, someone that looked like Michael Vick, Allen Iverson, Donovan McNabb as our QB. Our fans would love this brand of football. Steve Young or Fran Tarkenton would also do in style. I have listed some pretty spectacular people but I'm only referencing their styles.

An athlete first at QB is a pretty glaring vacancy in Pitt's recent history.

I am sure if we could get a Vick, McNabb, Young or Tarkenton caliber of player to come here, we would change to offense accordingly :)

Greg Cross was that kind of runner, but was such a horrid passer he couldn't see the field.

I remember that horrific Sun Bowl game when Stull was so tragically bad, it looked like neither team would score, I remember thinking Wanny had nothing to lose by just putting Cross out there and letting him run.

Of course, he didn't ...

Thought the same thing. It was a horrible weather day and I bet for the next 5 years, 20% of our games will be in bad weather.

I think you will see Canada follow in Chaney's steps of working toward having more QB runs over time. It won't be the Rich Rodriguez offense or anything like that, but I do think they are similar in wanting to have the QB run a bit, particularly off the zone read.

However

1) Nate is a serviceable runner, but not a guy who is going to really help you by running more than a couple times a game at most.
2) Their QB depth is not near where it would need to be run him more than just enough to keep defenses honest, pick up a few first downs.

I really liked that QB Canada was looking at initially from NC. If they would have followed up Big Mac with him, there two years or so from maybe having the QB running be a bigger part of the offense.

A really good QB is a glaring vacancy.

I know it is sacrilegious to say anything nice about Penn State on these boards. But look at the season when PSU was last really good. Their last two BCS Bowl participants 2008 11-2 Rose Bowl and 2005 11-1 Orange Bowl. They had Darryl Clark and Michael Robinson at QB respectively. Neither were great QB's per se, but they were athletic, they were able to convert 3rd and 6's with their legs. They made plays. They kept chains moving, drives alive.

When they were playing, I thought it was a shame this was not Pitt on their helmet. They would have been a perfect fit.

The 08 game with the tickle monsters vs Buckeyes was on last night I watched some of it and they had a quarterback I think it was Clark. he made some real good plays, amazing what a good runner can do in the college game.

That's it. You really don't need Dan Marino or John Elway to elevate your program, you need a QB who can make plays, any plays. We have lacked that aspect.

I say this repeatedly.

Tennessee won the national championship with Tee Martin, who took over from Peyton Manning.

Not saying that is why they won it, and Martin was nothing special for sure as a pro.

But, in college, you can win pretty big if you just have someone who is smart, heady and can maybe run a bit when it is necessary.

LOTS of good college QBs who have helped teams win national championships, conference titles, big bowl games, have been "three star" types who just happened to have "it."

Best Pitt QB since Marino was probably Pete Gonzalez ...

I was at that game, it was not a horrible weather game. Wasn't great weather but certainly not bad enough weather to blame the play on it

i recall it being very windy, although I was watching it at a bar in Maryland and wasn't there.. I'd hope weather/wind had something to do with it because qb play was beyond bad. There were deep balls thrown where the ball wouldn't even land within the camera shot.. The camera would follow the WR running down the sideline and the pass missed by so much, you wouldn't even see it in the screen..

The model for having an athlete at QB is Ohio State. For the players they recruit, they always seem to me to have a surprising stodgy offense, but they usually have a QB who can turn crap into points by scrambling or running.

Go Pitt.

-Gonzo

Other than that, nada.

I was there, it was incredibly windy. The Army's Golden Knights parachute team cancelled their pre-game jump into the stadium because the wind was just outrageous. Neither team could complete any passes.

Jeff I used to wonder how Walt's tenure would have turned out if Pete Gonzalez was a RS Freshman and not a senior when he came onboard.....They way Pete attacked the playbook and succeeded, by his junior year the program could have looked alot different under Walt....IMHO

Then Chaneys footsteps would have led to starting Voytik over Peterman

In attendance. Very, very windy and chilly for El Paso . Stull's passes were high arcs and the wind batted them down like Olajiwon around the basket.
Bostick came in the last two series and was more successful over the middle with a flatter trajectory, but too little, too late. Game was more embarrassing than the decade earlier demolition by O$U.
