Mark Barron to Steelers

Yeah, that’s the thing that’s such a shame about the Burnett thing. People are lazily panning everything about it, which is just how it goes when you lose. However, it is my firm view that the philosophy behind it was very sound. It just didn’t work because Burnett couldn’t stay healthy and he did not want to play that role even when he was healthy.

I sincerely think this is where defensive football has to go. You have to play an extra safety in place of one of your linebackers to cover all of the sideline to sideline plays (bubble screens, jet sweeps, tunnel screens, etc.) that are now just a regular part of the game. Theoretically at least, that guy should also help you cover tight ends running down the seam.

Barron has already played that role for the Rams, so there’s really no projection going on here. He wears number 26, but don’t be fooled. Barron is a linebacker, not a defensive back. As someone said earlier, he’s basically the same size as Shazier, but not nearly as athletic.

What I think the signing does is it frees them to draft the best player available in the draft. If it’s a middle linebacker, great! We need one of those. If it’s a rush linebacker, we need that too! Is it a corner? Wonderful, we could use one of those. Is it a receiver? We could use that too. I would not be upset if they drafted another safety either. Nor would I be upset if they drafted another offensive lineman.

This team has a lot of needs and they are going to need to address most of those through the draft.

Barron played the hybrid role in Tampa, he was the original hybrid and plays it well. He's not an every down lb in our system.

Shazier was undersized, not the ideal size lb for a steelers defense.

I’m genuinely confused what you mean by this? This isn’t 1972 anymore.... shazier was a prototypical linebacker in today’s game and would have gone down as one of the best had he stayed healthy. If you’re saying 6 1 230 is undersized in today’s game you’re wrong

Good post mean Gene. LBs need to be able to run and cover now. Run stopping LBs get you killed against against offenses that will spread out, which is most offenses now.

Also agree on the second point. They went out and added a CB, a WR, and a LB. They will stay at 20 and draft the highest rated player, WR, LB, CB, OL, TE, doesn't really matter what position. They have enough picks later to add at many positions later too.

Yes, he's too small. He learned how to use technique to get around blockers, that's what made him great. Mark Barron is not Shazier, in fact, there isn't another Shazier out there. Your mlb needs to be about 245 in the NFL and run.

Yep agree with Yinzer and your 2nd paragraph. This gives them flexibility with who they take with that 1st pick. Beforehand they were in dire need of an ILB and screwed if either of the 2 worth taking at that spot we’re gone.

Another Safety / LB combo player??

Does this mean we can cut Marcus Allen?? The less Penn St trash the better.

Allen is not going to make the team. He barely made it last year and we were super thin at that position. We are deeper this year and they will have more competition there for him.

Burnett played like caca even when healthy. When you make people miss Mike Mitchell, you know you've made the wrong kind of impact...

Eff the Steelers, with their epic mismanagement of two once-in-a-decade talents. The Rooney in charge and the head coach are two major nitwits that got pushed around by two punks. Should have nipped all their crap in the bud. Instead, the coddled the cry babies and rest is a stain on Pittsburgh values and it's history.

Yeah. Way worse than a cocaine scandal.
