the expanded bonus allowed free of the pools after round 10 definitely gives teams an edge to sign more of these good prep players.
Huh? There is no expanded pool of money for players drafted after the 10th round. If a team signs a guy drafted after the 10th round for more than the amount set by MLB that amount of money counts against their pool of money. For instance if the Pirates drafted this kid in the 11th round and paid him a $250,000 bonus they'd have to account for the amount over the maximum (it's somewhere around $125,000) allowed for a person drafted after the 10th round out of their pool of money.
Based on what has happened since they went to the current bonus pool system, if a high school player gets drafted in the first 10 rounds you ought to assume that he is going to sign. Last year all but two or three high school guys drafted in the first 10 rounds signed. It was the same the season before. For guys drafted after the 10th round the signing rate is closer to 50%.
Hope this kid makes it here but if he is drafted fairly high, Top 10 rounds, which he seems destined to be, then he is crazy if he doesn't sign.
Actually he probably doesn’t go in the top 10 rounds. Not about his talent, but about the quirks of the MLB Draft. Teams use the first 5-7 rounds to grab best players they can. Then they use the rest of the top 10 rounds to mix in guys who will sign for slot and underslot amounts to make the bonus pools work around those top guys.
As weird as this sounds a player drafted in the 11th round is typically a better prospect than the players drafted in rounds 8, 9, and 10. And teams are typically able to pay a player drafted in round 11 more money because that first 125k doesn’t count against their pool
