Matt Rhule

I always feared him the most as the nitter coach in waiting. Thought he was the one who could lead them to the promised land. But now, I think Franklin is better and beginning to wonder if Rhule is over-rated.
Rhule has been overrated for years. I have hoped for years that Penn State fans would run Franklin out of town and hire Rhule, because it would be the most effective way to move them back to a perpetual 7-5, 8-4 type of program and allow us to regain a recruiting foothold in the region.

I worried about that too. Rhule won at Temple and Baylor because the previous coach built the program and he reaped the benefits.

His Nebraska tenure is proof he is just one of many average coaches littered across the country.

I think the absolute most important things for a head coach to be in the modern age of college football are to be flexible and adaptable, and also to be a really strong manager of people and relationships. I don’t think Rhule is that guy, and he’s never been known to be this elite schematic whiz or fantastic game manager. To be honest, I think Franklin is better in all of those regards, but I also think Franklin is a much better coach than the rest of this board does.

I think a lot of fans who like Rhule want to brush off the disastrous tenure with the Carolina Panthers as “that’s the NFL, and it’s different than college football,” but I don’t really think that’s the case. You used to be able to run a college football program with an iron fist because players didn’t have the autonomy to leave. Now they do. It’s much more similar to dealing with professional athletes where their football career is their job, and I haven’t seen a single indication that Rhule is well equipped to handle that dynamic.

I can't speak for the Baylor situation but Temple was reeling a bit after Addazio's one good season. I think they were 3-8. I know several guys who worked and played for Rhule and they said he was by far the best coach of the Golden/Addazio bunch.
