On Wednesday, Swarbrick was called out publicly in the form of a full-page advertisement taken out in the school paper, The Observer, by a group of fans and alumni. Under the headline “Notre Dame Football Has Failed Under Jack Swarbrick,” a list of the program’s shortcomings is featured. Among the bullet-point items is the Irish’s 0-10 record against top-12 teams during the last four seasons, the academic cheating scandal and the pending 21 vacated victories as a result of that scandal, the arrests of six Notre Dame players before the season and “denial of accountability.”
The ad also says Notre Dame has failed on the field, off the field and has failed to uphold standards. In a recent interview with Jack Nolan, Swarbrick doubled down on his statement from October that he wants Kelly to return next season. In January, Kelly signed a six-year extension that would keep him in South Bend, Ind., through the 2021 season..............
“It was an extremely disappointing year,” Swarbrick told Nolan. “Every player, every coach, myself and other administrators involved in the program – we all share the same view. There’s no way around that conclusion. It’s not bad breaks. It’s not a play here or there. We didn’t do what we need to do." Swarbrick has been Notre Dame’s athletic director since 2008 and graduated from Notre Dame in 1976. The men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as the school’s soccer and fencing teams have enjoyed recent success during Swarbrick’s tenure. In 2013-14, 22 of the school’s 26 sports qualified for postseason play.
