“This is the most confidence we’ve had going into the Pitt game,” Mason said

Enough said

Duquense is playing better this year so far than they have at any time in the recent past (like the last decade or two). So why wouldn't they be more confident?

There have been years in the past where if Pitt played well Duquesne essentially had no chance, because Pitt was just that much better than them. Tonight, if Duquesne is at the top of their game Pitt will have to play close to their best to beat them. There's a reason why the point spread is currently 8 points. That's got to be the lowest it's been in this game for a long time.

They should be confident. This is like an NIT team vs an NCAA bubble team. They can beat us.
You nailed this! That is exactly what it feels like. It's funny, because many have called for Duquesne to improve to the point where they would be a positive, instead of a negative on Pitt's schedule. The drawback of course, is that if the Dukes became a team that was consistently NIT, or even bubble quality, Pitt will occasionally drop some of these games. Kind of like Villanova, and St. Joe's, where the Hawks win about twice a decade. What you don't want is a situation like Xavier, and Cincy, where the competition becomes largely even. You could even live with that, provided it was a case of Duquesne becoming dominant in the A10. In that case, you'd tip your hat to them, as it would be like adding another high quality game to the schedule. If it were a case of Pitt becoming mediocre, that would be a bad outcome.

Mason with an airball and playing like he is completely overmatched.....

Not sure why people love this guy. He can't create his own shot, and an average defender can keep him from getting open looks.

He'll make a lot of threes against lower competition.... but I still maintain he'd be the 12th guy in Pitt's rotation.

It was a confident 1 point, and 27 point deficit at the half, though

He was only able to score when literally nobody else was on the court.

He'd be great at a game of H.O.R.S.E...... but not against actual D1 quality teams.

Like I said.... he's be the 12th man in Pitt's rotation.

Yeah, he scored because Jamie Dixon didn't give a crap when he got his lineup in. He knew he could spot the Dukes 10 and still win.

He's a great shooter. Better than anyone on Pitt's team for sure. But....yeah, you have to be able to get an open shot and when the team around you is not that good, teams can "cheat" against you.

But I love Pitt fans always wanting to denigrate the local kids, just like TJ McConnell.

Mason couldn't carry TJ McConnell's jock.

We aren't denigrating Mason, we are mocking UP#1.

Mason is 4-for-9 for 11 points.

But he didn't make his first bucket until 23 minutes into the game. He couldn't do anything with Robinson on him..... only when Robinson came out did Mason start to get some open looks.

Mason's line:

4-for-11
2-for-6 from 3
11 points (only 1 point in first half, and it came before the game started)

OVER-rated.

robinson's D on mason was superb. Pitt played Zero zone. Jamie challenged these guys, and they responded

I would take Robinson and Smith over him. Long-term Wilson and Cam Johnson have more potential. I wish him well, but unimpressed in the games I watched him play.

Custer was confident going into the Little Big Horn, too. Same result tonight.

I think Mason would actually be a useful player on this season's Pitt team. I mean he wouldn't play 30 minutes a night or anything like that, but we could get him some wide open looks every game on Mike Young kick outs when he gets doubled. And Mason is a very good shooter when he can catch and shoot in rhythm.

Yeah, but what does he offer us over Sterling Smith who essentially has the same role?

A guy off the bench who would do for us what Cline did for Purdue.

He would be a very valuable player on this team. He'd probably come off the bench as the 3rd guard. I'd rather have Sterling Smith because of Smith's defense and rebounding, and obviously I'd rather have Robinson, but I think Mason, or Coulter for that matter, could be the 3rd guard on this team, especially given that they are both seniors. Look, I hope mason makes every shot he takes the rest of this season. I think this Dukes team isn't awful, they will win a fair share of A-10 games, they just aren't in Pitt's class.

Unless you are planning on playing Smith 40 minutes a game I am pretty sure there will at least be some minutes available there.

Yeah, Coulter and Mason would both get minutes at Pitt this season. Neither would be a star, or even a starter, but both of them bring things to the table that would get them playing time.

agree. I high percentage 3 point shooter would be very useful. especially against zones (syracuse). Mason hustles on D as well, better athlete than I thought he would be.

I think to me it comes down to Mason versus maybe Chris Jones. I wouldn't take him over Smith, Robinson, Wilson or Cam Johnson. Maybe not even Chris Jones.

Guy would be a spot player. Like has been said, against a zone team, or one that doesn't defend well, he'd be quite useful. Some games he'd play 10-12 minutes, others, he wouldn't get off the bench.

That's nuts. I wouldn't take him long term over cam Johnson, but this season? Not close, mason all day. I'd also take him ahead of chris jones easily. Same for Coulter. Those guys are good guards, just because Robinson and smith are better doesn't mean those guys stink, or wouldn't get minutes on our team.

Saying it's nuts is a bit extreme considering who we are talking about. Anyways, I was thinking long term, because you can't just move guys around like fantasy football. I was talking real world, not fantasy. There are plenty of guys on other schools we would take. And I am sure if other teams had some of our players, we would say we could use them.

Well, since mason and coulter are seniors, I assumed it was for this year. And I do think given the way our guards have played off the Bench, it is nuts to say you wouldn't rather have coulter and mason, who are probably a top 4-5 backcourt in the a-10, which is a pretty good league. But, I'm with you long term, at least on cam and Damon.

That is how low Duquesne hoops has fallen. They will continue to miss the postseason of any kind every single year. And really I don't understand it.

Easy, they don't rebound or defend a bit.
Hard to win when you are capable of giving up 57 a half.
I meant more to the fact that they always seem to get one good player at least. And I mean really good. But are out of the race for the tourney in late January with their awful record and it's pretty clear by then they won't do any damage in the A-10 tournament. They should be able to get more kids to go there to help them enough to at least go to the NIT a few times.

Frankly, when did they last have a good coach?? Everhart was only fair...and Ferry's teams are awful, despite some good players. No $$ to spend on staff or recruiting.

I guess because their really good player would come off our bench most years, and we aren't as good as we were.

Don't make me say it. T.J. McConnell went to Duke out of high school. It's players like this I mean, from our backyard, that go to Duquesne over Pitt. And the years he was there, it was still same 'ol Duquesne.
