Might JDG replace GDG as a starter?

Coach with strong support of GDG in his press conference and how much he believes in him and that fans need to support him. He acknowledged that he’s struggling but has confidence he will get on track shooting.

I didn't watch the press conference but saw a quote Capel made about Guillermo. I want the kid to succeed; heck, I want BOTH of the twins to succeed. The GLF we fans may have hoped for hasn't come yet, though it's nice that one (Jorge) is shooting well. Maybe G is just in a huge slump and all he needs is for a few 3's to fall in succession to boost his confidence. 6 rebounds was encouraging; he'll need to keep getting more forceful in his boards as the ACC games get underway

I was excited what these guys could become coming in, but I have lost my patience. They are a huge defensive liability. They are so soft on the inside. They've put on no muscle or weight. Any decent post player just backs them down and easily scores on them. Let's be real, if these guys weren't 7 foot, they wouldn't be athletic enough to play D1 basketball. I thought how great of an advantage it was to have a 7 footer that can shoot, but GDG is like 20%.

Either way, they don't have a ton of options. With Dunn injured, they don't have enough bodies.

I think GDG will play out of this slump. He's hit some big shots in the past. I do agree the twins are best off the bench and we need to go small ball with Dunn back to have success down the stretch. But I think for now we should be fine.

If we could get Dunn back by the Clemson game we should be ok in the meantime. Other than Duke every game we should win even without him. Stanford will be a challenge too. But still we should be able to go 5-1 or 4-2 in that stretch even without Dunn.

Capel admitted he’s been in a huge slump and said he understands what GDG is going through. He said part of the problem is this year since he’s at the four he isn’t able to just hit set shots where his feet are already in good position. He’s more on the move and has to work on getting his feet set right. It was intersting because he made the same comment about Zach making the same transition to ACC level completion where you have to work more on your footwork to get your shot off. He said he’s confident GDG will get out of the slump but needs to tune out the noise and not let it affect the rest of his game. Last night I thought that was a problem.

My biggest concern with all of the bigs including Corhen is that they are just so soft on defensive rebounding. Despite the nice win this has to improve for this team to be as good as it can be

EKU was definitely getting more rebounds (offensively) than a team at that level should've been getting against a team at Pitt's level. And I agree, the "softness" of our bigs is disappointing. ACC play will either expose our bigs further, or expose the league as being soft, too

EKY had 13 OR and 19 DR at Clemson and 15 OR and 18 DR at Pitt.

Ultimately, with a matured Kante, the best defensive/rebounding front court might be Kante at the 5, Corhen at the 4 and Austin at the 3.

I don't understand the lack of Kante. Totally get that my perception is probably a bit skewed because I watched the end of the Ohio State game and haven't seen a lot of him otherwise. But he at least seems like he belongs in this level of basketball. GDG is a nice bench piece to have, but he is just so noticeably the weakest link way too often.

Raw and fouls. If he limits fouls he will play more and more. But came right in at VT and fouled. Fouled out at OhSt in 17 mins…

I'd rather have a guy foul out and contribute some points/defense/rebounding than a guy go 1-8 from the field and get backed down like a dude on stilts trying to defend Shaq.

Had Ohio State been a better FT team, then Kantes fouls likely would have cost Pitt the game. Before they went on their run, Kante fouled and the Ohio State player missed two FT. Had he made them, it extends that lead further and doesn’t allow Pitt to get out in transition. It’s a balance. I think they can allow him more playing time and also get the most out of GDG by encouraging him to stick to more interior shooting. Also, not to add to the let’s change Jersey thoughts, but if you google Kante stats Pitt, it lists Kantes name but shows a picture of one of the twins.

Well, there's another part to that story. Without Kante, we lose to Ohio State by about 10 in regulation.

But I mean, yeah - ideally you play him more and teach him better technique. I don't think he's a windup toy, whereby him being on the court has to mean five fouls are coming automatically. He just seems to be the much better athlete to me.
