It is well known that Jamie signed a lot of lower-ranked players in his last few years. However, it is amazing to me that just by luck, there were so many lesser-recruited players within 2-3 hours in Ohio that went on to very big things.

- Trey Burke - from Columbus. OSU didnt want him. He committed to Ed DeChellis and PSU over Ohio, Cleveland State, and A10 Butler. He reopened his recruitment when he felt like DeChellis wouldn't be retained and he got better offers (Iowa, Cincy, Nebraska) but not great offers and committed to Michigan. A lot of what ifs but if we identified him first like DeChellis, maybe we get him.

- Jack Gibbs - east of Columbus. Very, very lightly recruited. Went to Davidson and became 1st team All A10 and big-time scorer. Watched him drop 34 on Dayton and pretty much single-handedly beat them. Could have had him

- Payton Aldridge - practically right down the street in Warren, OH. Very lightly recruited. Went on to average 20+ PPG and 2nd Team all A10.

- Caris Levert - Pickerington, picked Michigan over only receiving offers from Ohio and Dayton.

- CJ McCollum - not even on the radar. Went to Lehigh.

I guess my point is that if Jamie and Co. had a better eye for semi-local talent, a few of these players would have gone to Pitt and maybe things would be different. I'm probably forgetting a few Ohio players too.

Jamie's "hit rate" with lesser-recruited players later in his career was very low.

We all know Jamie's recruiting stunk at the end, but in fairness you can't recruit everybody.

So Kithcart and Wilson were lower ranked players? Kithcart was 128, Wilson was 100.

Pitt doesn't recruit top 100 players. We did get Adams, Blair, Birch, Taylor, Paterson. These were all top 100 at some point. I'd hardly call a top 150 player a "lower-ranked" player. Maybe if you get below 200.

But rankings mean squat unless they're top 25 or even higher and can't miss prospects. The class we have coming in is very underwhelming in terms of star and class ranking. But all that matters is what they do on the court. Rankings and stars are for message board posters.

Right. But I'm saying in the end, Jamie had a very poor eye for talent.

Odd examples given a ton of schools missed on them. Not just Pitt.

Of course. Just saying that Pitt signed a bunch of lower-rated players that didn't pan out. If luck would have had them offer any of these semi-local lowly rated players, things may have been different. All chose to play at schools further from home than Pitt.

Got to give it to you SMF for these informative posts...

While some can be a bit wild (lol), they're interesting & something cool to discuss.

Huggy Bear flew to Columbus after the game yesterday to attend the D-1 regional semi-final between Pickerington North and Pickerington Central. He is recruiting PC's Jeremiah Francis- a sophomore and junior Jerome Hunter of North.
Stallings needs to head 175 miles west and get after these 2. There is plenty of talent here in central Ohio and Stallings better realize that.
Francis' teammate 6'11" Sterling Manley is headed to North Carolina and I guarantee Pitt never gave him a look.
