… those who were regulars on the Panther Lair from around 2000-2014 may remember one of our most noteworthy posters and great Pitt fans known as geno2u.

I just learned that Geno died this past September, right around the time of the passing of another one of our Board stalwarts, Harve74. Geno was 88 at the time of his death.

I was proud to call Geno a good Pitt Basketball friend, who knew me, my wife and son well. We met often on "the Porch, recruiting events, and even at PantherLair gamewatches.

I should also add that Geno and Harve74 were friends, and the three of us met frequently in our Pitt basketball circles, along with many, many Lair posters who I am proud to call good friends.

It's been about 24 years that I've been hanging out on these Panther message boards, so the inevitability of the passing of Panther friends is to be expected. But the sadness touches all the same regardless.

RIP my friend.

I definitely remember Geno’s posts over the years. Thank you for passing this along, DT. 88 years. What a great, long life.

Remember his posts well. Will keep him in my prayers.

Oh wow I just mentioned him in a thread yesterday. Was wondering where he was. Sorry to hear this is the answer.

Condolences to his family and any Lair members who had the pleasure to know Geno.

I was literally just thinking about him the other day and wondering if he was still with us. So sorry to hear this news. He was a great poster and fan for sure. This board was really fun and collegial in the early 2000's and the early days of the Pete.

DT, thanks for sharing this news. Condolences to his family and friends. 88 years. He was born during the Depression; lived through WWII, and perhaps served during the Korean War. He got to see and live through quite an eventful time in our world’s history ... RIP, sir ...

Sad to see the originals from frank's board (which was... '96-ish) no longer with us. There are a few of us around from the usenet days before the http protocol even existed ('88 -> '92). I remember Harve from back then... a guy from Dayton... and of course... Rutgers Al.

What happened to brian gold? He shouldn't be that old. He showed up in the late 90s.

I was on the original board - Frank Sokol and Harry “The Guru” Psaros. I was DiehardPanther.

A good guy. He wasn't hard to find in a crowd with the basketball jersey and visor cap he wore at games. Hope his last years were relatively healthy.

A legend on these boards...Gene, Godspeed and travel well my friend. Your job is done here.

Yes — it was ponderous.

Gino definitely didn’t like Dixon’s style of offense. He preferred faster tempo basketball. Probably also hated Tony Bennet’s style at Virginia. Those who didn’t agree with Gino accused him of wanting to see an undisciplined run and gun offense (RAGO) like seen in AAU ball. Doubtful that he really wanted that style. Pretty sure he just wanted something faster than Dixon’s style.

Gino will definitely be missed by those of us who sparred with him over his favorite subject—Pitt’ style of offense.

Very sad to hear of both of them passing. I remember them both from the early days of the board, back when I actually posted a bit.

Thanks for updating us, DT.

Those that don't know, Brian Gold is an elite Special Forces Op. He is in some deep cover somewhere that even his family can't know. What they do know, and take pride in, whereever he is located, he is the first person at his assignment every day.

For what it’s worth, geno coined the phrase PHCO under Howland, during Howland’s second year.

That was really the offense that he found ponderous. He dealt with it OK when Ben won 2 Big East Titles.

He was actually a pretty big Jamie fan, but still wanted us to play faster.

I always wondered what the P stood for! I joined the board after that acronym was created and knew that it meant slow offense as compared to RAGO (I figured that one out!) but never bothered to ask for the full definition.

This board definitely misses both Harve and Geno. For those of us who were here for the glory years of Howland/Dixon, both guys will be remembered fondly.

RIP Geno. And thanks DT for letting us know.
