This morning Chris listed a bunch of names, Addison, weaver, jones, Pickett to name a few, recruits under the radar, diamondsi the rough, and that Pitt needs to keep finding these kids, for what? A 3 - 9 year? A 7 - 5 year or just an above mediocre year, OR is it the coaching?

The problem is the names behind those guys. He’s had some talent, but the drop off to the next level has been pretty steep. And the continued poor OLine play is particularly notable. They may have a guy or 2 here and there but the collective talent there leaves quite a bit to be desired.

But his point is still valid. Pitt isn’t all of the sudden gonna be landing regularly in the top 20 recruiting classes. Unless some whales want to fund it.

Well many of those names where the key pieces on a team that won a conference championship and earned a major bowl appearance, and that season would have resulted in a playoff birth under the present system. So the upshot of "keep finding these kids" is much greater than 3-9 or 7-5. Now finding these kids is easier said than done, but Narduzzi did it once which is more than any other coach can say in my nearly 40 years of being a Pitt fan.

I've mostly stopped watching those videos because I strongly disagree with too many of his takes, but if he is suggesting that high school talent is a better path to success for us than relying on the portal would be then he's spot on.

Proven talent is much more costly than high school recruits. If you strike gold with the latter, there's a good chance you'll be able to keep him because not everyone wants to uproot themselves just to chase more money if they're experiencing success where they're at. Some guys have routines and develop relationships with teammates/coaches/etc., and they want to concentrate on football rather than the mercenary side of business.

Obviously we'd still need help in the portal, but how many stars are we realistically going to find that way? Reid is about the best we could hope for, and he comes with a pretty big caveat (not built to endure full seasons at this level).

If NIL was in full swing the championship year my gut tells me those defending Narduzzi would have a few less poker chips to play with.

Take everything you know about recruiting and flush it. If you want to argue Duzz is coaching kids up I'm going to say that in limited circumstances, yes. Deep down I think that the kid's who are "overperforming" their recruiting rankings are much more responsible for that than the coaching. You know, you have to do the work. What I find interesting is what happens to the projected starters who are leaving the program. They generally aren't matching their success at Pitt.
