You have me wondering what type of game it was. I’ll have to check the stats and game summary. But I get it. If you watched the game online, then I truly get it. When I watch college soccer games online, which I often do, the game seems much slower. If you’re new to the game or have no rooting interest, it’s likely worse.

If you popped into the game in person for 40 minutes last night, and didn’t enjoy it, then I’d be surprised.

To love soccer, I think you have to learn to admire things which are alien to Americans who have watched football all of their lives. Like the first touch. It doesn’t seem like that big of a deal until you realize it can be the difference between a play going nowhere and a goal.

Messi’s first touches are better than anyone else’s and that is one of the things that makes him the best player in the world. If he wants to kill the ball at his feet, he does. If he wants it to give him momentum to start a run, he deadens it a little but leads himself with it to the left or right, depending on where he sees the opening. If he wants to one touch a pass or shot, he does. It is something that happens so quickly that unless you are focused on it as the ball is coming towards him you will miss it.

So true, can't tell you how many players I have seen, who have the speed and athleticism to be good soccer players, but who's first touch was so awful, that they were mediocre to bad soccer players.
