Don't even want to get into the details of this game. Not sure I see a lot of value in it. Instead of going player by player, just have some more general big picture questions.
I'm really not sure what has happened to this team. I understand they are young in the backcourt but none of this makes sense. It seems like the confidence is completely gone and I don't understand why. Capel is not a yelling intimidating presence like a Bob Huggins. He literally lets his players do just about anything. He never yells at anyone. If he is anything, he is positive. No matter what. I'm struggling to figure out why their confidence has seemed to disappear. Sure, now it is starting to get away from them but I am talking weeks ago. That first collapse at Syracuse was a killer. Maybe that was the start of it.
When I watch this team, it literally looks like an AAU team that found a bunch of players in a radius and meet up at a weekend tournament. Introduce each other before tip and just figure it out. That is honestly what it looks like. Trust me, I know that they work hard, practice, do film work, etc. But it honestly makes you wonder whether or not they practice. It is so confusing to me. For whatever reason, there is no carryover.
The only player that I think has improved this season is Jaland Lowe. Everyone else is regressing. Blake Hinson got in the best shape of his life, and all of a sudden he has no legs. Can't make a shot. He is playing for his future. It isn't a bad game or two for a streaky shooter. He just can't make a shot. They continue to let him drive, even though every single drive is a nightmare. He might as well just turn and throw the ball out of bounds.
Bub has completely disappeared. This is not who he is. Can't make a shot but you can see how mental it is for him now. You can feel how much pressure he feels on each drive through the TV. This is a kid that showed as much as any freshman in the country a couple of months ago (I know the competition level but it's all relative), and now he doesn't score a point in 35 minutes of a must win game. That is really hard to do. Like unfathomable.
The twins are basically unplayable right now. Specifically Jorge. Same goes for Fede. Unfortunately, Fede has gone from a quality ACC center to unplayable. I could not believe my eyes on the one play so I had to rewind. Yes, he caught the ball under the rim and backpedaled out of bounds. There were a few other moments like this too. Like cannot believe my eyes type of stuff. I don't care where the kid spent his summer and how much time he missed with the team. Nothing about it makes sense.
These are players that played last season. I expected the front court to carry the team this season while the young guards figure it out. They have basically been a total no-show
This roster is not perfect but I'm sorry, I still think they should be much better than they are right now. There is just no way this is the product. I cannot believe it. I have no answers. They did not show against Syracuse at home. Swept by that Syracuse team. The game was never close after the first ten minutes. This is another terrible year for the ACC. Coming off of the year they had last season. I have no answers right now.
