Excerpts:
When asked about Pitt's historic defensive stand that led to victory against Clemson two days earlier, Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said he couldn't remember everything about it. “I watched so much Duke tape this morning, I forgot,” he said Monday during his weekly news conference. Good answer, coach. It's time for Pitt to move on from its sixth victory and concentrate on buffing its resume for bowl season.......................
Recent history should serve as a warning.
Wannstedt 2007:
• In the final game of the 2007 season, Pitt defeated West Virginia, 13-9, robbing the Mountaineers of an appearance in the national championship game. With high hopes, Pitt opened the next season with a 27-17 loss to Bowling Green at Heinz Field.
Wannstedt 2009:
• In 2009, Pitt started 9-1 for the first time in 27 years by beating Notre Dame, 27-22. With the Big East championship on the line, Pitt lost its next two games to West Virginia and Cincinnati.
Chryst 2012:
• In 2012, former coach Paul Chryst nearly orchestrated a stunning upset of No. 3 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., losing in triple overtime. Six days later — in a rare Friday night game — Pitt traveled to Connecticut and lost 24-17 to a Huskies team that had dropped four straight.
Narduzzi 2015:
• None of those previous games involved Narduzzi, but last year's team — his first at Pitt — started 6-1 only to lose to North Carolina, 26-19, in its next game on national television. Pitt won only two more games the rest of the season.................
Narduzzi 2016 ?????
...........
That finish is on quarterback Nathan Peterman's mind. “One of my goals is to finish the season better than we did last year,” he said. “That for me is motivation.”Narduzzi noted that Duke is also coming off an upset victory. The Blue Devils beat North Carolina last Thursday, knocking the Tar Heels from the Associated Press Top 25. “Gotta go play ball again,” Narduzzi said. “Like I tell our kids, it doesn't matter what you did a week ago.” ..............................“Do we do that this weekend? I don't know. That's the challenge as a coach and as a player to mentally get your mind to the point where you play like that every week.”
