** In my estimation, the best way to view this Panther victory today is only in the context of the 40 minutes on the floor, and not seeing it in the bigger picture.

** When doing so, it was easy to enjoy a fun basketball game, and a nice win with several very solid performances from individual players.

** It was even a game where one could say that the Panthers looked fairly well coached, or at least better coached than the opponent.

** I’ll check that by saying that the Panthers didn’t execute particularly well in the first half. But they did walk out of the locker room for the second 20 minutes with a seeming new resolve to commit to some motion on the offensive end. And even if the Panthers don’t hit shots, it’s certainly much easier to watch an offense with players moving instead of standing.

** It was also fun watching Big John play a very solid basketball game following a trio of stinkers.

** One could wonder why NC State didn’t attack John quite as much with the aggressive double team, and because of this he was able to respond much more efficiently than he has of late. His passing might really have been the difference in this game.

** Speaking of coaching, the halo must now be fading from Kevin Keats. He used to be a guy I thought highly of for our job, but not so much now. Hard as it may seem, NC State is notably less talented at the moment than even our Panthers.

** Jamarius still operates a little too much one-on-one for my taste. But he’s proven he can really make plays when needed.

** And for good measure, note that Burton is now averaging 15.7PPG over his last 15 games.

** Another bonus is that we were able snag the victory with Mo only playing 18 minutes. There’s no doubt that he’s become my favorite Panther, but we need him on the court twice as much as he was today. Most of this will be accomplished by playing a little more defense with his feet instead of his hands.

** Ithiel deserves a shout out for playing a solid basketball game without shooting the three well. It was one of the first times that I can recall when I didn’t see him so much as a defensive liability.

** Outside the hardwood, this was certainly the best “atmosphere” we have had at any game at the Pete this year. Not only might have been the biggest crowd of the year, it was almost certainly the loudest if has been for any game this year. This isn’t to say it was loud, but loud enough to factor in at least to a small extent.

** I don’t know if any members of the Oakland Zoo will read this but I hope they do! They certainly have not stopped showing up in strong numbers while bringing plenty of enthusiasm.

** As I mentioned, it’s better to resist going too far past what happened on the court today. But I do want to share a conversation I had with two NC State fans in the elevator of the parking garage before the game. The gist of it was … “yeah, today we get to decide who’s not in last place!”

** Another troubling notion is that it’s becoming harder to enjoy the progress of a players’ development, knowing how it easy it is for a player to transfer. In other words, it’s nice to watch John grow a little today. But will we get to see him grow even further next year?

** And of course, there’s the future of Coach Capel. But at least with a win today, we can put that out of our mind for one night at least.

I think Coach Capel will be back for next year, which I am sure is not a popular opinion. I hope that means Big John is with him. He is learning how to play and with that, getting in better shape every practice and every game. As you mentioned DT, he showed he can be a good passer today. I think part of the reason they didn't constantly run doubles at him is because of what Horton showed last game. They didn't help off of any of our guys today very much. It really helps having 3 guys who can actually hit some threes now. Maybe their percentages are not that high, but, I don't cringe when Horton, MO, or Burton let one fire. Anyway, I always look forward to Panther basketball, and it is nice to get a win, especially against a team we seem to never beat.

There really is only one way to view this, and it is as you suggest. We won a game against a team that has had our number and we played a pretty good and enjoyable game.

Big John played well and is going to be just fine. He has more foul shots than any player in D1, so that means that he is getting pummeled and beat down probably as much as any player in the country too. The last 3 games were tough on him because he was doubled and both teams were very big too. An NC ST double would not have been nearly as effective because they really can only play one big at a time.

I am fine with the Jamarius one on one show, he finishes more often than not and his mid range game is just fun to watch.

Thought Mo’s absence may hurt more, but we handled it pretty well. That is one of the big reasons why having Ithiel back really helps.

I agree that Ithiel’s D has looked better and he had a really good game for not hitting many of his 3’s. His handle looks better and his mid range game looked good.

The Zoo looked great on TV.

At this point, it seems to me like Capel will have another year and if so, I think you will get to see some of these guys develop some more. If Capel is back, Big John is almost certain to be back too.

Mo has been such a pleasant surprise and has become indispensable due to his shooting and shot blocking. I agree with Burton doing a little too much one on one. There was a time when he needed to do that earlier in the season due to limited other options but not so much anymore. The starting 5 now is decent but the problem continues to be the bench. I cringe when any subs come in.

No disrespect , but if any decisions have been made and someone was blabbing about it Heather would can their ass .( especially if he was to be canned )

NCST has been a thorn in the side for Pitt on the court and in recruiting so any win against them is great .

Pitt fans would’ve loved either Mack or Keats as Pitt coach after KS and both have failed at far better programs to be a HC at than at Pitt . There’s no perfect formula for hiring a coach .

DT…from the left coast, always nice to read the Dribbles after a W!

Yes, it may be one game, but a joy to watch. And the crowd sounded energized!

Jeffers, even though he plays rough at times, is really an all out hustler…you may not see it in the stats, but I appreciate his Effort!

Capel will be back, as it appears these players work hard for him, despite at times being offensively deficient…and I believe he’ll attack the transfer portal as he did last summer.

Hail to PITT!

This team has me perplexed. There are times when I think, man can it get any worse, then there are stretches where it is like wow, they look really good. A lot more of the first than the second. But the inconsistency is maddening. One minute their BB IQ is low and then there is 5-10 minutes where it seems high. For some reason, I really like this group and how hard they play, most of the time, but know they need more talented players. Wouldn’t James Robinson be a good addition to this team? A true point guard that protects the ball. One other thing…this team can’t ever pull away and take a commanding lead. Yesterday, they started to pull away with an 8 point lead in the second half and before we knew it, the game was tied and NCS took the lead. Happy for the win and feeling like Capel is here another year.

The funny thing is that this year , take that exact statement, and it could be said for what appears to be the coaching, albeit negatives outweigh the positives. I am not sure why Pitt does not come out with high energy on defense, they look to be able to turn it up at times this season.

"at far better programs to be a HC at than at Pitt" Saddly, that's certainly true since the Barnes-Stallings fiasco. It wasn't necessarily so true just a few years before then.

Nope he’ll be here at least and if he get things turn around like I think he will will. He’ll be here to duke calls but that’s only if he gets it turned around…
Don't think he can get things around now--IMHO, his window of opportunity to do that has probably closed unless he keeps key players and strikes gold in the portal and then produces a winning season next year with quality recruits to follow.

On the other hand, I do believe he will be given one more year--especially since he has now won 10 games and could possibly win 1-2 more before a loss in the 1st or 2nd game of the ACC tourney ends the season. IMHO, things would be different if, like Stallings, he finished the season with only a single digit win total (8-24) and 0 wins in ACC games.

LOL - this is some big league trolling right here.

The odds of Capel becoming the Duke HC are a smidge better than yours. Not much though.

In the prime years of Howland/Dixon, Pitt was considered one of the top programs in the country. All it took was for Stallings for 2 years and now Capel for 4 years to tear it down to what it is now.

I believe that Capel will be back next year, just because there are no viable options to replace him. Great that we won yesterday, but it doesn't change what the fabric of this program is now and has been under Stallings and Capel. That has to change and hopefully will after next year.

This might be where the change happens after this season and it will appease some. I do think it should happen. The core of this staff has been here from the beginning and nothing has gotten better. This would be a good start and avoids a Capel buyout at this time. As they say, The definition insanity is doing the same thing over and over agin and expecting a different result.

Hmmm the way Dan Rooney got rid of chuck Noll was to tell him to fire coach joe Walton the offensive coordinator . Noll refused and resigned . So Heather tells Capel to unload his staff and Capel bails. ??

Agree with this statement wholeheartedly DT.

Everybody is a free agent, all the time...... If everybody who can come back next y ear, does come back, and we get some decent transfers ourselves, Pitt could be pretty good next year.

On Femi, he is not a true point guard. However, he does look a lot more thoughtful and under control as the year goes on.
This is his second year as a point guard at the D1 level, and last year was a mess with Clovid. I would love to see him play two more full years. He has big time potential, if he really works at it.

I've talked to several people who have always had great information from inside the athletic dept and the best take I have right now is that nothing is anywhere close to certain at the moment.
Yup.

My personal take on everything is that Heather really doesn't want to make a move but might feel like she has to. It's not like with Stallings where everyone knew she wanted to make a move but it wasn't certain they'd be able to with the buyout.

Agree. We lost the lead
in both halves when due
to fouls to Mo, and the
need to rest Hugley, we
had to sub. Jeffress does
try hard, and made a dunk,
but he is no viable answer
when Mo sits. Collier, for
Hugley is just as bad. He
does hustle and gets an
occasional put back, but
we're a totally different
team with them. When
they're both on the floor
together, we struggle.

I think one more regular season win guarantees Capel is back. If Pitt goes 2-0 this week with a big win at Carolina the firing talk should just cease and hope two transfers are added.
They aren't going to win at Carolina. I think they'll go 1-4. They absolutely have to beat GT and win a game in the tourney. They could possibly beat Miami tho.

Keatts said it aloud for all to hear. Pitt is different with Horton as a threat. You have to respect the potential which opens up other things. Paraphrased a tad, but coaching Pitt not the same as a month ago. Wish all players were in better shape and double wish players take the open 3 rather than contested 2’s a few feet closer to the rim.

Boy, that difference between 9 and 10 or 11 WINS seems huge to you.

I remember thinking the exact same thing about LOSSES.

Heather will absolutely not do that. If Capel is here he has full control over his assistants.

lets wait til Wednesdays game before we go crowning Capel anything more than he is..we just beat the other two teams in the league worse than us by a fraction...

We are all happy that we just got a close win against Florida State on Wednesday. Yesterday North Carolina was beating Florida State by 38 points at half time.
