NC State Game & Other Dribbles ...

We are all happy that we just got a close win against Florida State on Wednesday. Yesterday North Carolina was beating Florida State by 38 points at half time.
Very few yrs in the history of Pitt bb could you expect Pitt to beat elite programs like UNC or. Duke .

Keeping the score close against teams like UNC or Duke ( which lost to FSU ) will not be a determining issue in JC further employment at Pitt . The money owed to him will . If in time as the sum becomes more manageable and the program continues to flounder is when Heather will pull the plug , but not till then .

Just a little thing I noticed that was really a positive in my mind. Horton was having a hard time getting an open shot and nailing it. Especially coming off of the FSU performance. But he made a fantastic cross court skip pass to Mo for an open three. Then later on, he made an outstanding cut that Pete Carrill would have been proud of for a layup.

So often shooters when things aren't going well sulk and get lazy and just stand around. He showed some maturity and BB IQ.

It was probably his best overall game as a panther , off his best shooting game

I mean. He is permitted to improve. Right? The haters with attached narratives don’t allow for on-court improvement from one year to the next. Maybe maturity off the court is needed before the final eval on this guy is complete. Oh, there are still many posters already loading up their keyboards to fire away with the next poor performance. But the game is in him on any given night including some nice performances last year. The defensive improvement will come as well. Hopefully a consistent plus performer moving ahead.

Some people hate Capel so badly at this point that they can't admit things. Horton, despite what some have said, does matter. He is no all-american, we can all agree. That said, one could argue that he is the number one scoring option on this team. He seems to be getting into a nice rhythm after a few games back, and it is unlikely we win either of the last two games without him. He showed some good mid-range yesterday and his defense was pretty solid, which was my biggest worry. I really think his presence has kept this team afloat, and taken some pressure off the shoulders of Big John as well as Mo and JB.

I know most of you are fed up but, we are not getting back to where we were without some major pain. We will likely not see a run Iike we had under Howland/Dixon. What we need is to get back to respectability. That may take time. Players like Horton are building blocks to said respectability. Their is some talent here but, not enough to compete with the top half of the conference. If we could add an impact transfer or two, next year could be another step forward. It is obvious we are not ready to compete at the top yet, but in this conference it is easy to see that a couple good additions could put you in the top half.

I remember many calling for the head of the Duzz before lasts years success. No one likes a mostly empty Pete, but, I think Capel will be back and it doesn't take a huge leap of faith for me to think that we could improve our ACC standing next season.

Burton, Hugley, Horton, and Odukale are the ACC level players that return next year. Sibande is a question mark, but we can add him to make 5. You are always going to have injuries during the year. Everyone deals with it. We need more than 1 or 2 impact transfers to be a serious contender for the tournament, and that is if none of the key guys get poached. Everyone else in the ACC is going to get better. This is probably the worst that the ACC has been, and we are still only 10-16 in Year 4.

I don’ t see how Hugley does not make a business decision.

More lucrative NIL, play on a winning team, play before large home crowds and play in the tournament.

He can virtually guarantee himself that situation.

Why stay for unrealistic maybes?

Makes zero sense.

** In my estimation, the best way to view this Panther victory today is only in the context of the 40 minutes on the floor, and not seeing it in the bigger picture.

** When doing so, it was easy to enjoy a fun basketball game, and a nice win with several very solid performances from individual players.

** It was even a game where one could say that the Panthers looked fairly well coached, or at least better coached than the opponent.

** I’ll check that by saying that the Panthers didn’t execute particularly well in the first half. But they did walk out of the locker room for the second 20 minutes with a seeming new resolve to commit to some motion on the offensive end. And even if the Panthers don’t hit shots, it’s certainly much easier to watch an offense with players moving instead of standing.

** It was also fun watching Big John play a very solid basketball game following a trio of stinkers.

** One could wonder why NC State didn’t attack John quite as much with the aggressive double team, and because of this he was able to respond much more efficiently than he has of late. His passing might really have been the difference in this game.

** Speaking of coaching, the halo must now be fading from Kevin Keats. He used to be a guy I thought highly of for our job, but not so much now. Hard as it may seem, NC State is notably less talented at the moment than even our Panthers.

** Jamarius still operates a little too much one-on-one for my taste. But he’s proven he can really make plays when needed.

** And for good measure, note that Burton is now averaging 15.7PPG over his last 15 games.

** Another bonus is that we were able snag the victory with Mo only playing 18 minutes. There’s no doubt that he’s become my favorite Panther, but we need him on the court twice as much as he was today. Most of this will be accomplished by playing a little more defense with his feet instead of his hands.

** Ithiel deserves a shout out for playing a solid basketball game without shooting the three well. It was one of the first times that I can recall when I didn’t see him so much as a defensive liability.

** Outside the hardwood, this was certainly the best “atmosphere” we have had at any game at the Pete this year. Not only might have been the biggest crowd of the year, it was almost certainly the loudest if has been for any game this year. This isn’t to say it was loud, but loud enough to factor in at least to a small extent.

** I don’t know if any members of the Oakland Zoo will read this but I hope they do! They certainly have not stopped showing up in strong numbers while bringing plenty of enthusiasm.

** As I mentioned, it’s better to resist going too far past what happened on the court today. But I do want to share a conversation I had with two NC State fans in the elevator of the parking garage before the game. The gist of it was … “yeah, today we get to decide who’s not in last place!”

** Another troubling notion is that it’s becoming harder to enjoy the progress of a players’ development, knowing how it easy it is for a player to transfer. In other words, it’s nice to watch John grow a little today. But will we get to see him grow even further next year?

** And of course, there’s the future of Coach Capel. But at least with a win today, we can put that out of our mind for one night at least.
Hats off to the Zoo, they were solid. Good to have the band, cheerleaders, and dance team. Last minute of the game was fun, something to get loud about.

Big John brought it from the opening tip. He played with some fire.

They hit the glass pretty hard, rebounding and making FTs were the difference in the game.

you never know that that next situation will bring. You could have made the same exact statement about Kenny Pickett. If everyone comes back, Hughly knows he is playing for a coach that absolutely has his back. He has improved massively in a year, with this coaching staff.

Because Capel stood by him when some coaches wouldn’t have. Why do you think the other kid from Brush committed to Capel? I am not saying we need to keep Capel because of Hugley, but if Capel is back, I would expect Hugley to be back.

Players need to act in their own self interests, coaches do.

You think Capel brought Hugley back out of the goodness of his heart? Capel needed Hugley.

A better question might be: Should the University have allowed Hugley back?

Resolution of legal issues does not necessarily indicate reinstatement is appropriate.

Mo has been such a pleasant surprise and has become indispensable due to his shooting and shot blocking. I agree with Burton doing a little too much one on one. There was a time when he needed to do that earlier in the season due to limited other options but not so much anymore. The starting 5 now is decent but the problem continues to be the bench. I cringe when any subs come in.
Worst bench I can remember. They are a huge liability.

Hugs being loyal to Cappie seems like the sensible thing to happen but don't underestimate whoever Hugs has chirping in his ear; family, friends, etc.

"Hugley's charges were reduced to two misdemeanors, and both of those could soon be expunged from his record, provided he successfully completes Pennsylvania's ARD program for first-time offenders."

So he will have no criminal record as a result of this situation, but Pitt should not allow him back on the team?

Awfully low bar.
Nevertheleas, it does provide the AD cover to wait another year. Optics are just better enough than Stallings 8-24 (0-18).

Good chance they win one more (GA Tech at the Pete) and may have a shot at an ACCT win depending on who they get in their initial game.

Just an opinion though, I don’t care either way as to timing.

I did not say that.

I suggested there is the legal determination (where pleas are made and accepted (for various reasons) and determinations are made about the chances of proving charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

That is never the entire story. A university should be interested in the entire story.

I am suggesting the entire story can and sometimes should, play a part in determining if a University decides to continue an association with a player.

There has been plenty of people who have lost their jobs for actions that resulted in no felony conviction and misdemeanors that were later expunged.

Maybe someone knows the entire story and can answer the question:. Should Hugley have been accepted back?

Maybe there is no question about that. Maybe expediency played no part in the decision to reinstate him.

No disrespect , but if any decisions have been made and someone was blabbing about it Heather would can their ass .( especially if he was to be canned )

NCST has been a thorn in the side for Pitt on the court and in recruiting so any win against them is great .

Pitt fans would’ve loved either Mack or Keats as Pitt coach after KS and both have failed at far better programs to be a HC at than at Pitt . There’s no perfect formula for hiring a coach .

I trust your insights more than anyone else on here , but anyone blabbing this kind of info is risking their livelihood.

It normally doesn’t work out so well when you tell someone that this info is for your ears only !

I trust and believe in things you say more than anyone on this board. Having said that, you talked about letting the season play out and the decision would become clearer. That made sense and still does. The 2 VT games had me thinking it might be time to cut ties. However, the team continues to battle has won a couple and maybe the decision should still be on hold. If we stay competitive, win 1 or 2 more and maintain our important players, I don't think ADHL makes a move. If you can get past the 2 VT games, this doesn't quite look like the prior years' collapses, although there is still time for them to come undone. I think Capel has been better this year, the team has played as a team for the most part. They have worked hard most of the time, they are just short on talent and depth. That is on Capel, and the portal will be critical for this team to take even a small step forward next year. If he is still here, and the current guys we need to keep stay, Barnes would likely keep his commit. It is all pretty tenuous, but, buyouts and new coaches are not always the answer.

Unfortunately, this is a really tough call.

I don’t think it’s a waffle
Every game is a data point
As is every recruit or transfer

frankly - that recruiting has been essentially non-existent for two years is the biggest reason to move on
I think we know exactly what we're going to get out of a Jeff Capel coached team. If HL doesn't know yet, I'm not sure what the last few games is going to tell her. She's either going to mea culpa this year or next.

The last sentence is the key and why I don't support the staff any longer. Seems they've soured on recruiting HS kids. I don't think he'll ever build a winning team out of the portal, and you're not going to build a program out of the portal.

I predict Pitt wins the ACC tournament, then proceeds to win straight through and win the National Championship.

Better? Sunny enough for you?

Hmmm the way Dan Rooney got rid of chuck Noll was to tell him to fire coach joe Walton the offensive coordinator . Noll refused and resigned . So Heather tells Capel to unload his staff and Capel bails. ??
Not a close comparison. Noll didn't have a big buyout and was his own man.
