Clearly, we will be in one or the other. But at least if you are in the former (NCAAT) instead of the latter (NIT), you'll:
  1. Get your team announced on a TV show that the entire fandom of NCAA Men's BB will be watching
  2. Be able to watch/DVR the 1st round game without interruption or need for some exotic cable or dish network
  3. Be able to fill out a bracket sheet which includes your team, and have them mysteriously going to a point beyond what they're capable - (but that's how dreams come true!)
  4. Argue about:
    • where we are slotted (region),
    • where we should've been seeded (the seed will undoubtedly be too low)
    • where we are playing (venue),
    • how many or few of us will be going to the game(s),
    • whether we can or can't defeat our first round opponent
    • whether we can or can't advance to the Sweet Sixteen
    • why the committee has us playing WVU in the second game
  5. Be more interested
If we are in the latter (NIT) you'll:
  1. ...
  2. ...
  3. ...
  4. ...
  5. ...
Panthers: don't disappoint us any further . . . at least not until the first round game of the NCAAT . . .

I will not watch 1 second of the NIT when all the Panthers had to do was beat 2 beatable teams to lock up a berth and they failed miserably. I have no interest in a tournament where the fans don't want them there and neither do the players. Trust me, it'll be a short stint, 1 and done.

My biggest issue regarding the NIT is probably not being able to get the game on any major network, or even an independent, who will broadcast it where I live; much like the last two games which I couldn't see. Not that my watching it would make a difference in the outcome of the game(s); still, as a fan it sucks when the game is not available in live time. I am already wondering if I will be able to watch our first round game in the ACCT. Who are we playing, BTW? Syracuse?

My guess is if they get in the NIT, they will play all away games because our AD will want to avoid the embarrassment of playing the game in an empty arena. Playing in the NIT with a veteran team like Pitt's is the equivalent of walking down Madison Ave. in your birthday suit. Baby, it's cold outside....

Every NIT game is on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, or ESPN3.

We should decline an invitation to the NIT. Last year's showing was a complete embarrassment and it is not going to change this year. If we lose to SU, and Gonzaga does not win their tournament, then schedule a rematch with them Saturday. Baseball and football team's schedule rematches when a game is postponed, so it is not an outlandish thing.

If we make the NIT, we should decline. If this team can't get up for their last 2 regular season games, there is no way they show up for an NIT game. It would be another huge embarrassment and even worse than last year.

Very true. I don't think anyone here would have any confidence in Pitt, but just getting there is important to me for the reasons you said. I get the whole "oh they don't deserve to be there and wouldn't go far anyway" line of thinking, but still.

Look at a few NC State teams the past few years - despite their average seed being about a 10, they had some fun upset wins over Nova last year, Georgetown a few years ago, and almost had a few more upsets over Kansas and one of St. Louis's best teams. Better to end your season swinging against a good team in the tournament than to end your season somewhere in the NIT or CBI.

The most excitement I've had in these past 5 mediocre seasons was when Pitt blew out Colorado in the first round and at least had a shot at Florida... don't get me wrong though - I'm obviously sick of being a 8 seed to borderline NCAAT team, given the success in the 00's.

I'm not so confident in this self-proclaimed mentally weak team's chances in the ACC tourney, and despite all their success against Syracuse, don't like the idea of getting a team they already beat twice. I'm guessing if Pitt is one and done in DC they would need a good bit of help, and even then, Dayton may be the best bet.

BJ ..... maybe we should decline but I highly doubt that we would.

Hey Pitt once declined a Rose Bowl berth back in the 30s. The reason they used was that cross-country travel was so hard back in the day. Maybe we could use that excuse, it is extremely difficult for the players to trudge up Cardiac Hill to the Pete. :D

This really confuses me. Syracuse is probably the best match-up possible and people are using our regular season sweep as evidence AGAINST us being able to beat them?

Why should PITT decline an invitation to any basketball tournament that "PITT earned."
Are to good for the NIT?? I doubt it! Its possible we don't win a game in the NIT.
Do the PITT players think they're above the NIT?
If yes someone ( Dixon) better straighten them out with a closed door locker room session!!!!! Tip to Jamie no cell phones allowed.
Maybe this is exactly the problem with Mr. Coach Dixon and this undermotivated team!

LOL ! .... you may be on to something California

The 1963 football team also refused a bowl bid.

Maybe we could tell the NIT that we decline because we have to study for mid-term exams .... LOL !

Hard to beat a team 3 times. Just get that feeling Syracuse may be due to beat Pitt. That and I just don't trust these guys in postseason play, given this team's make-up and tendency to not make clutch shots and win close games (against average to above average teams, at least). Call the logic flawed/pessimistic and I understand, doesn't necessarily mean Syracuse will win just because they may be due/have a bit of a losing streak against Pitt. just my own thought and I really hope I'm wrong.

The 1963 team did not refuse a bowl bid. They were not invited to a bowl.

Do you have DirecTV? My ISP doesn't provide ESPN3 either, so I sign in that DirecTV is my provider, then you can watch ESPN3. You have to provide your DirecTV account number for proof, then you're good to go.

Actually I have Xfinity, but for some reason my ISP Address says I am in metro DC/Maryland, when indeed I am not. Each time I've tried watching the Panthers on ESPN3 I've either been blacked out or it never loaded. I supposedly have a super fast wireless modem ....

Yes, it is confusing. Pitt clearly knows how to beat the Syracuse zone and has the players to do it. What is not to like about this match-up?

Have you tried the ACC network online? I have watched Pitt basketball and football conference games via the web. I suspect that all conference tourney games will be available there.

Yes they were invited to a bowl game in 1963. At the last minute a bid to the Sun Bowl was offered, and at that time the Sun Bowl was considered a very low bowl game in the pecking order, and #3 Pitt refused.

That's just not going to happen. If Pitt goes to the NIT, they will most certainly play at home, period. Everyone knows that NIT games are lightly attended in most places. It's far from an embarrassment since it's the norm.

Look at the link below near the bottom of the article where Fred Mazurek clearly says they turned down a bid to the Sun Bowl.

Thanks for the correction - I didn't realize they had turned down a bid.

By the way, I went onto the Sun Bowl website, and it appears that a 4-6 SMU team took that bid. They got the bid because they beat Navy early in the year, something that the Pitt team did not.

Can u give me 1 good reason why anyone should attend a game in which the team does not try? That is what happened last year.

In that case we got really unlucky Louisville has a post-season ban, because we are due for a win against them.

I can't, and I won't. NIT games are the pits. However, that doesn't change the fact that Pitt will absolutely play home NIT games if given the opportunity. It's political, has nothing to do with attendance.

Usually all the NIT games are on ESPN, because they play Monday/Tuesday and the NCAAs are Thursday/Friday.
