Let me count the ways why Pitt ended much better off with Matthews than Winfree:
  1. Size: a 6'5" receiver will be a great weapon in the future
  2. Character: Winfree had several strikes against him in the past. Matthews has had no issues from reports I have seen
  3. Eligibility: Only two years with Winfree, full eligibility for Matthews
  4. Position flexibility: Matthews, although currently only wanting to play WR, could be one hell of a safety. Look at TJ Clemmings from a couple yrs ago switching
  5. Keepin #412 at home
  6. Conduit to Wade (Clairton connection)

3 and 6 are important.

We don't know yet how Matthews will translate to the college game yet. Actually, we don't know how any incoming player will until they play.

Winfree does have experience playing in a P5 conference. The fact that he only has two years was a bit of a concern along with why he is no longer at Maryland. But it seems that he could have been ready to play right away.

Again, there is always concern when a player has multiple strikes against them to have to leave a school.

I think the long view is we're better off with Matthews, mostly for the non-football reasons (2,3,5,6) you list above. However, our coaches wanted Winfree--bad--for next season. He is plug and play, assuming he comes to work and be coached. he was a better WR prospect coming out of HS and played right away for a P5 program. He is faster, stronger and more polished than Matthews. Matthews will not be capable for contributing to the level Winfree will this year or even next, that;s a fact. I would have liked to see us get 'em both.

I'll take Mathews, Ffrench, and especially Flowers over Winfree, Ffrench, and Flowers. Would've been nice to get them all, but Mathews wasn't coming here if Winfree was. I like the recruiting class as it stands today a lot better than how it looked yesterday morning.

That's the point. Sure, it would be great to have them both, but that wasn't going to happen.
