@jmverlin: Team Final/Roman Catholic (Pa.) 2016 SF Lamar Stevens was offered by Pitt.

@MattSteinbrink: Pitt is trying to get back to Philly in a big way. Offered the potential 2016 package deal back court of Tony Carr and Lamar Stevens.

Interesting comment by Carr about liking Crean's 5-out motion offense. I can see why you'd like that system as a guard. Lots of scoring opportunity for the wings and guards. I think IU is only running it because they played small without a legit post man all year.

Anyway, maybe some of these posters are right about players considering style of play more heavily than they used to.

That being said, in your opinion do you think Pitt's lack of strong offensive identity has hurt them in recruiting over the past few years? I can understand the recruit's comments about liking an offensive.

I don't know. All I'm saying is, maybe there is something to the speculation others have suggested that our plodding style of half-court offense does hurt our recruiting. At the same time, when we had the right players, that same offense used to win us a lot of games against more talented opponents.

If you read the Philly Basketball Recruiting Profiles of the pair, they sound like James and Nasir Robinson Part Two's, not like high flying types. A 6-4 strong, pass-first traditional PG who probably needs to look for his offense more and a wing who isn't afraid to bang inside against bigger guys but needs to work on his jumper to increase his range.

I'm not knocking James or Nasir. I think mental toughness was a big item lacking last season. I think some Philly toughness could be exactly what is needed on our roster to get us back to the team that Cuse and UConn hated to play.

I think the Gil Brown's, JJ Moore's and Durand's athletes didn't give us what we were hoping to find. Some throwback guys might.

Maybe so, but Carr specifically talked about the 5-out and the scoring opportunities it creates for perimeter players. I haven't paid much attention to the argument that our style hurts recruiting, so that quote caught my eye. Also hearing Izzo say after he got bounced that he needed to do a better job recruiting players that can drive the ball to the rim due to the way the rules and officiating are trending, was telling as well I think.

Can't argue with that. The game has changed. But, we have played that penetrating style fairly recently, too. The last #1 seed team featured Brad and Gil slashing to the hoop in a drive and dish offense. As Ashton emerged as a dead-eye shooter, that team evolved to feature him, but those two were skilled penetrators.

Our offense has been much more adaptable than many critics credit. It is flexible enough to feature the strengths of our best players.

This team needs to add some players adept at both creating with dribble penetration and stopping dribble penetration. Damon Wilson is known for getting in the lane to the rim. Mustapha Heron is excellent at that. Josh was supposed to be but for whatever reason last season, he just couldn't finish and his dishes too often ended in oponents' hands.

Our roster is out of balance because we tried to solve the center problem by throwing bodies at it. We tied up three scholarships with non-productive players and ended up playing Mike Young there anyway. Throw in 3 more scholarships to Artis, Jeter and Luther who are all basically 4's and 7 rides are tied up in 2 positions. I know you consider Artis and Jeter more as 3's who are playing at 4 too much but I'm coming from the perspective tbat Dixon likes to play faster, more mobile 3's at 4, not bigger, slower guys at 3.

Jamie is shedding the 3 centers and will likely have only two pure centers on the roster this seaon and probably ongoing. It's possible with no pure center seemingly on the radar for the '16 class, he will go with more versatile 4/5 types, like Young and apparently Manigault in the future.

That should allow more guards and wings and more speed and mobility. A team needs to have more ball-handlers these days than centers.

Agree with all or most of that.

I think Wilson might be a much better player than he;s getting credit for on this board. Given his handle, size and strength, he can make a difference right away. He also looks plenty quick with the ball. If he can shoot the 3 ball, that;s gravy.

Heron is a home run, the kind of guy that can get us over the hump if we have the rest of the pieces in place. We all need to keep our fingers crossed on him. he and Wilson with their length, athleticism and skillsets could form a helluva duo, similar to the old Steven Bardo/Kendall Gill backcourt at Illinois.
