New Coach K book details…

I always thought Doherty was a good coach. I think he had some interpersonal issues that caused his demise if my memory serves correctly.
I thought he’d be successful at St. John’s or one of those type of schools -
Even though he played at unc - it’s a whole different culture

Bad anger management issues if I recall. I remember him doing a Pitt/Miami game and he and the geeky 30 year old play by play guy almost got into a physical fight. I've never seen anything like that. It was very uncomfortable to listen. Doherty obviously has mental problems.

that's a great story. I've been known to have anger management issues in the past. Not fun.

Listen
I’m sure K’s opinion holds a lot of sway -
But if the AD and BOT let him hand pick his successor - then shame on them .

They are negligent in their jobs- it’s not about K
UNC let Roy do the same. Sometimes it’s best to let the basketball big boys make the decisions.

People worship K like Joe Pa, and I think he's probably evil just like Paterno. I can't wait till some of the skeletons in his closet are exposed and I'm sure there's plenty.
I hate Coach K, I sat next to Coach K on a flight from Athens, Greece to NYC in 1986, he was really very dull, he wasn't as famous then either, he did tell me he was in Greece to help coach the Greek National Team, and he told me they where too undisciplined and would never amount to anything, when I asked him how the team was? Ever since then I never liked the guy. Next year 1987, Greece beat USSR to win the European Championship! I remember I was in Athens again that year, actually at the game and my first thought was, "Take that Coach K" :) and then again, I remember Greece beat the USA team he coached in the 2006 World Championship semi-finals, again I had that "F-U Coach K" feeling :) he finished his career as 49-1 as USAMNT Coach, funny the team he said would never amount to anything was THE ONE, I still get a kick out of that! Just my personal Coach K story :)

Did you tell this story before and added he was sort of a jerk to his wife? Talkative to you but you were shocked at how he treated her?

Doherty made a comment to the play by play guy that he never played above CYO. Also when they showed the Hurricane mascot, he commented that that's a job he's qualified for. And he wasn't joking. He wanted to fight him. That was the last game Doherty ever did I'm pretty sure.

Yes I think I did. He was too busy looking at his Duke Basketball binder the whole time. I didn't realize who it was at first, then I saw the blue binder that said Duke on it.

Exactly that's the point. Everyone else trying to distract with a racial argument.

There's no experienced head coach that's going to want to quit their current head coach job to sit on the bench as a head coach in waiting. K knew that Amaker wouldn't want to go for that.
So if K knew that - he would have let Amaker make that decision not him!

Smh...that's my point!!!

It gives K cover to say that it was Amaker's decision to not take the job!!
Why does he need "cover"? why can't he just say he prefers the other guy and not have to explain why?

Quite a few people in this thread are missing the point of my original question so I'll restate it:

So why would Amaker, whose resume includes being head coach at three universities, have to come back as an assistant first (a capacity in which he had already served)?

To learn how things operate and form relationships with the people that feed the machine and keep the talent pipeline open.

Duke wasn't what it is today when they hired Coach K.
No, but they had been a very solid program under Bill Foster. Duke's teams with Banks, Gminski, Spanarkel and Dennard were outstanding. They were preseason #1 team in 78-79, and were top 10 all season. The 79-80 team underachieved, but had been Top 10 much of the season.

I still vividly recall the upset at Duke in 79, with Clancy making the steal and basket in the last seconds, and then getting completely throttled by them in 1980 at the Field House. It was clearly the biggest name team to come into the Field House in my four years at Pitt.

Yep. Duke was the runner up to the Kyle Macy led UK NCAA Championship team.

So Matt Doherty is available? That guy could recruit and Coach - I could live with the occasional fist fight with a reporter.

FYI, looks like Amaker is going to finish in 5th place, at best, in an 8 team Ivy League. Could finish as low as 7th place. My understanding is that he attracts top-of-league talent to Harvard without getting top results.

I was waiting for the angle that the woke admin of Duke wanted to hire a black guy just to hire a black guy, which is totally possible... then the privileged old white guys shut it down, rather than thinking maybe the guy K wants to hire is a better fit? For whatever reason, but because he's white and Amaker is black, it can only be racism.
Coach K shouldn't be in position to hire anyone - he's not the President nor the AD, irrespective of how successful he was/is. Once he retires he should not be a part of any decision making other than offering an opinion - not dictating who get's hired. And that "woke" talking point is old and lame...get something else.

That's easy to pretend it's like that, but Coach K is like a JoePa character, I'm sure he's bigger than than the school itself and decides things behind the scenes than an average coach doesn't

You’d have to be an idiot not to listen to a guy whose kept your program as one of the top 2 programs in the country for yrs .

No one said you don't listen - but do you let him make the decision? That's the question.

Maybe you shouldn't, but I wouldn't doubt it happens with someone at the legendary status of a Coach K

If a coach like Coach K was at Pitt for forty years and won five titles I'd be cool with him making the decision on the next coach and living with it. Also, the fewer decisions made by the Pitt brass the better.

Not sure what's funnier though: a coach being at Pitt that long or Pitt paying him $10 million a year despite what he'd do for the school.

Would you rather that Heather or Barnes would choose your next coach or someone like JD , had he stayed and then decided to retire . I’d take JDs or in this case Coach K‘s than some administrators.
