A lot of great rankings but a few real opportunities in areas one would think Pitt would thrive. No excuse for Law, Business, Education in a Region that is great to consume all three.

I just don't get the struggle with Pitt Law. They've had multiple leadership changes, correct?

Paco - I'm not familiar with any of these names, but looking at this list it appears things really started improving from 2002-2005. Why did that Dean leave?

Herring was a law faculty member for about 10 years before he took over as interim dean and then was given the full time position. As far as I know, he just "retired' from the position and then went back to being full-time faculty at the law school. In fact, I believe Herring served on the search committee that brought in Carter. In 2013 he left to become the dean of the law school at New Mexico.

If there were any inside issues or stories, I don't know them. You'd have to ask PittLaw.

Remember though, part of the law school ranking drop was due to a change in US News' ranking methodology.

1. Follow the money.

2. Programs don't usually change that quickly. It is a numbers game.

One of the blessings/curses for Pitt is its ties to the Pittsburgh legal market. The Pittsburgh legal market really likes Pitt Law grads, however Pitt Law does not have very strong alumni bases outside of Pittsburgh. Now, with the contracted legal market, there arent enough open jobs to support all of Pitt's graduates.

Since I am from Eastern PA, I went to PSU Law instead because I didn't want to work in Pittsburgh. I wanted to work in DC, Philly or NYC. I have a friend who went to Pitt Law and similarly wanted to work in Philly. He was unemployed for a year and a half after graduating before he found a job. Dont get me wrong, PSU Law isnt without its warts as well.

Anyway, if you want to work in Pittsburgh, its a great choice. But the reality for people who don't results in a limited applicant pool.

Pretty simple explanation on Law, the institution simply is not interested in investing more resources into the school to enable it to climb the ranks appreciably. Unfortunately law schools do not throw off much revenue from research or writing. Consequently, a university's interest in a law school is in tuition revenue. Considering the demand for legal education is down in double digit figures nationwide, most law schools, including Pitt, have decreased class sizes...thereby further decreasing tuition revenue. Some universities are willing to invest in their law schools beyond the tuition return, presumably for prestige or institutional importance--Pitt is not such a school. Hail to Pitt!

Law Deans simply do not generally stay very long...they burn out and it is a very difficult and competitive market. I believe the average tenure of a law dean now is less than three years. It is rather unusual for a Dean to return to the same faculty where they were a Dean, although Pitt has two such faculty members. While leadership of the school is incredibly important, without money, it is next to impossible to climb the ranks very far--particularly under the present U.S. News formula. Hail to Pitt!

The med & health science schools keeps their place because UPMC is pumping in ~$300 million per year.

Think about that...that is 2X as much as the typical total annual state subsidization for the entire university.

The Law School needs someone to "buy" its naming rights. ReedSmith School of Law sounds good for $100 million or 2.

Why the nursing programs taking a slight hit?

Have some family members with both nursing and anesthesia schools?

Very slight but hate to see it move down.

The methodology changed this year. Prior years they just ranked masters programs. Last year they ranked masters and doctoral programs together. This year they ranked doctoral programs and masters programs separately...so the change from last year's rank is a little deceiving.

In any case, these things oscillate when they rank them every year, even when methodologies don't change. I wouldn't worry about it unless it becomes a downward trend.

But as PittLaw alluded, it takes money...so if your family member nursing alumni want to see Pitt Nursing's place maintained, they need to give back to the school however they can.

Law school faculty involved in publishing etc...is critical.

Pitt should invest resources into boosting its health care law specialization into the top 5. That would be the easiest way to spur investment into the program. I would also work towards whatever law specialization deals with computer technology/security, considering that CMU does not have a law school this could also help spur more investment into the program.

When I graduated from Pitt Law in 2003, the school was ranked in the top 50 in the country and was a 1st Tier Law School for the next two years. Around 2005/2006, the ranking slipped into the 70s.

I will never forget when the New Dean Mary Crossley came to my law firm to introduce herself to the Pitt Alumni shortly after being hired. She was asked about the drop in rankings, and essentially her answer was that "they were not important to her." As such, it comes as no surprise that Pitt Law's rankings plummeted under her tenure.

You know you are in trouble with an answer like that.

It doesn't matter how reflective of reality rankings actually are, universities live on their academic rankings because it is the #1 way their customers (potential students) make decisions to purchase their main product (tuition funded education), and unfortunately, none are more important than US News. That is an unfortunate reality whether administrators like it or not, and those that aren't tuned it to that are destined to fail, because whether they like it or not, that is also a large part of how they'll be judged.

It is a lot easier to fall in the rankings than to climb them, and climbing takes money. Money has to come from somewhere. Right now, the bulk of money (from outside support, from endowment returns, research indirects) flows into the health science schools. It's also no coincidence that the engineering school started moving up the rankings after it was renamed Swanson. The law school needs a transformative fundraising campaign.

There is no direct measure of publication or impact factor in US News' law rankings.

Currently, Pitt is ranked 54th in Social Science Research Network's publication ranking.
No, but the failure to publish is to law faculty what failing to train is to an athlete.
Many of the criteria used to rank law schools evolve from faculty involvement.
This isn't nano science....it's words.

In general, lawyers make more than the average college graduate.
That having been said, if money is the mothers milk of rankings, where is all of the donation dough from Pitt Law graduates.
As in everything else in life, follow the money.

Publish or perish is true for every field, even nanoscience. US News rankings don't take publishing into account for any ranking. It's top heavy for repetitional surveys, which of course publishing productivity indirectly takes into account, but that metric is far from objective or quantitative.

Let's be fair, I have no idea how Pitt law alumni support their school compared to peer schools. I bet you PittLaw is not a problem, but only he could speak to his fellow alumni.

Interesting it has been a while since looking at Academic Rankings on Universities but in the 1970-80s Pitt Law School was in Top 40-50s with Temple. Temple has stayed there and is one of the biggest Law Schools in numbers in the nation and many Judges due to Philadelphia Political Community. Yet, PENN has always been the leader in Pennsylvania in Business and Law Schools Rankings.

It helps leaving a Wealthy Alumnus Benefactor in the 1970s, Michigan still was giving free Ice Cream and a Steak Dinner for Law Students as left by William Cook. Cook left his entire estate to the law school. The estate, valued at $20 million in 1930, would have been equivalent to about $260 million in 2006 dollars, but that money was becoming depleted and keeping that legacy of a free meal and ice cream was harder each year.

Interesting, but Clemson, Georgia Tech and North Carolina State University do not have a Law School, and Virginia Tech has a partnership with University of Richmond Law School.

Here is a lists comparing all Pennsylvania Law Schools mixed in with ACC and Big Ten:

7 University of Pennsylvania PA

8 University of Michigan—Ann Arbor B10
9 University of Virginia ACC
10 Duke University ACC

It seems odd that Pitt is the highest rated law school within a 100+ mile radius of Pittsburgh, and it isn't even in the top 75. You'd think the Western PA legal community would find discomfort in that.

Cap'n - keep in mind that NCSU and UNC, by design, do not overlap in much provided academically to better serve their state residents. For example UNC doesn't have an engineering school. I know they both have MBA programs, but not sure where else they might intersect. (Plus I'm pretty sure NCSU doesn't have a lot of graduate program offerings compared to UNC.)

If we build an on campus stadium, the law school rankings will job by 20 spots.

Thank you, I was wondering and knew there are relationships between Universities within the States and knew someone would educate me on them, and I appreciate it. Penn State was a feeder to Penn, Pitt, Temple Graduate Schools at one time on Law & Medicine. I suspected Clemson and South Carolina along with Georgia Tech and Georgia, Purdue shares Mckinney School of Law with Indiana University too.

I am going to put up Pennsylvania Rankings by Pennsylvania Schools later in the various categories of Graduate Schools listed with Links. In any event, Pennsylvania can still be quite proud of having Top 10-20-50 Programs.

Thanks again and appreciate others joining in to share what they learned on the Lair!

For the most part these rankings are impressive.

I wonder why the Pittsburgh Post Post Gazette or the Tribune Review does not do an article highlighting Pitt ranking achievements.

Pitt rankings in the Health Sciences are equivalent to CMU's rankings in Computer Science and Engineering.

If both local Newspapers won't do an article on their own (Local Universities), I think someone at Pitt (marketing) should write the article and have it submitted to the Newspapers.

Local newspapers are quick to publish any negative press on Pitt or UPMC.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Source Listing in US News Graduate School Rankings and Links used for above Composite Rankings in the Commonwealth and appreciate if any and all errors need corrected. Pennsylvania can be proud of its rankings in my view and lucky to have such great universities and West Virginia too!

Crazy Paco may know if the Universities include Branch Campuses separate or inclusive for the entire rankings. US News seems to include some Branches but not all? RNP means Rank Not Published and UNRANKED means did not provide information. N/A means not listed at all so maybe do not have that Program.

CMU came in #5 Nationally in Engineering making it #1 in PA and #18th Nationally in Business making it #2 in PA and N/A not listed in other categories. Philadelphia has a number of other Medicine Schools ranked with PENN & Temple. I was surprised about some listings with Schools I never heard of in Pennsylvania. I also did not post all West Virginia Schools except for WVU. West Virginia had a number of other Schools listed as well but did not provide all Data so I limited it to Pennsylvania Schools.

Thanks Cap

What was a little surprising to me was how low Lehigh University was ranked in many areas, particularly Engineering. Not that it is terrible but for the tuition ($46,000. per year range) they charge you would expect/want them to be ranked in the Carnegie Mellon class.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
