i see Pitt just announced the new wrestling coach, Keith Gavin, an assist. . at Ok, who is a Pitt alum.

Know nothing about the guy but the hire strikes me as another unimpressive bargain basement hire by Pitt,.... more of the same by the new AD... really tiresome.

Weren't there proven head coaches who were interested?
I assume money isn't an issue when you're trying to lure coaches away from Lehigh and Edinboro

Well, at least Heather is not afraid to hire a Pitt Alumnus unlike the Bargain Basement Brain of Pederson's Bias except when it came to his Buyouts and mismanaged Pitt Spending with his own Consultants Mistakes own Due Diligence that were against Pitt Alumni, Boosters, and Pederson's Ego of Ignorgance?

Who knows.. any time Pitt hires anyone it's an adventure into the unknown in which they inevitably eschew the obvious choice for a cheaper option . The history of their "success" speaks for itself...

Disclosure: I could care less about college wrestling and admit I know absolutely nothing about it.

Forget about the lack of experience and go watch the video of this guy being interviewed while he was an assistant at Virginia. I think he bored himself throughout the interview. I can't imagine this guy lighting up a room while going after a potential recruit.

4 years total experience as a coach? Head scratching as far as I am concerned.

Double whammy.. no experience and no personality.

We're a PA wrestling family. I wrestled in HS and college, and the kids started a 5 and wrestled on a PA state championship team that was top five in the nation.
One thing about wrestling coaches. Its the kind of sport where top coaches were usually top wrestlers.
Also top wrestlers who become good coaches have the pedigree to attract top HS wrestlers. In football, basketball, and baseball you can learn how to be a great coach. IMO not wrestling!
Plus PA has some of the best wrestling talent in the country but you have to be able to attract it to your U. That happens in two ways # 1 top name coach with national, world, or Olympic experience # 2 a connection to youth wrestling by being a visiting coach at clinics and having a youth summer program at your U. You don't get invited to top notch clinics unless you were a great wrestler!
Many wrestlers form a opinion of where they want to wrestle early in HS.
Just my opinioin!

Apparently the top candidates removed themselves from consideration after interviewing. Good look for Pitt.

I'm curious why an ACC school located in a major hotbed couldn't lure coaches from places like Edinboro.
It couldn't have been money.
And then they end up w/ an inexperienced coach.
I don't care about wrestling at all but something seems off here.

And you would be correct

Most of the premier wrestlers in the state will not even recognize his name....I think she did totally botch this hire and it's concerning

To those of you complaining - How much money have you donated to wrestling?

I'm not complaining. I'm not a wrestling fan. Couldn't care less if they dropped the sport completely.
But I'm just curious how this happened.
Did Pitt not offer enough money to lure coaches from Lehigh or Edinboro?
That seems unlikely.
Pitt is in a major conference and located in a major hotbed.
Seems they should've been able to bring in a head coach with a proven track record of success.

WVU UNC NCST coaches all in the 125k range. New VT coach 125k, Dresser was at 175k.

Hopefully he does well, but hopefully the hire was done on the cheap. At the end of the day, its pretty much a "sport" with limited following around here. Couldnt tell you who won the national championship this year or even any of the schools that have wrestling squads.

Since you seem to be in the know and I admit I don't know much about wrestling, how much is he being paid? You mention Pitt was cheap so I am just curious as to his pay versus other top wrestling programs. Thanks.

Not sure of his exact salary but I ABSOLUTELY gurarantee that given the fact he has a total of 4 years experience as a coach, his salary is bottom of the barrel, entry level. Pitt's taking an absolute flyer on a guy with no track record...pretty sad.

He won an National Championship! I know there is name recognition.

That was my point earlier!
A large part of wrestling coach success is name recognition. Kids want to wrestle for guys who acoomplished things! A lot of wrestling success is teaching wrestlers tricks of the trade/home grown techniques that worked!
Name recognition goes beyond U accomplishments its more like national, world, US, or Olympic team accomplishments. Or guys with U wrestling accomplishments and proven high end coaching credentials!
When we would pick week long off season wrestling camps for our two kids we would look at the list of visiting coaches. We always went to the Lockhaven Camp because of the quality of the visiting coaches all accomplished previous wrestlers. Other camps may have been good but w/o coach name regcognition no draw.
That's also how good wrestlers begin the process of selecting a U to attend and wrestle for!

There might be in Pitt circles but if you take a pole of NJ, PA, particularly eastern PA, I guarantee most wont know right off the top of their head

It is amazing how anti everything Pitt can be to you. You admit you nothing, abut the new Coach but still blast away at the hire. This is the low point in your very sad sad anti Pitt existence.
