Practice No. 12 is here. I think we saw across the country that it's the time in camp where injuries start to mount. I think as a precautionary measure, and to give the guys a bit of a break - they got out of full pads for today. They went with "shells" which basically means helmets and shoulder pads and shorts. There is a scrimmage this weekend, and they are trying to be as healthy as possible.
-- We know Narduzzi doesn't talk about injuries, but he did mention he'll let us know if someone is out for the year. He hasn't done that yet, so that's something at least, right?
-- Keyshon Camp, Seun Idowu, and Grant Carrigan looked to be off to the side. They are still in pads and what not, just looks precautionary. Todd Sibley looks like he's a little more injured than those guys.
-- The running back line continues to be a bit thin. Darrin Hall is still not here. Again, it hasn't been addressed but he had a kid born on Tuesday, so it seems he's still with his family at the moment.
-- The first thing we saw today was punt return, and they have a little bit of a rotation. The first returner was Paris Ford. The drill was more about punting than returning, but he got the most reps for sure. Behind him in order: Shocky Jacques-Louis, V'lique Carter, and John Vardzel. Not sure if that means Paris Ford will be the punt returner, but I think he's perhaps the leading candidate. We usually see a larger group there, so maybe they are narrowing things down a bit.
-- Speaking of punting, Kirk Christodoulou looked pretty impressive. His hang time was pretty good. I know there are some concerns with a freshmen taking over at punter, and there will certainly be growing pains. But he seems like a capable punter and could be good over time, sort of how Winslow's career played out.
-- The offense did their normal walk through against nobody. The first team looked like this:
QB - Pickett
RB - Ollison
TE - Sear
WR - Araujo-Lopes
WR - Butler-Jenkins
WR - Jacques-Louis
Line - Millin-Dintino-Morrissey-Herndon-Bookser
Slightly different that yesterday, but I've seen this grouping a number of times in the past week or so. It seems like this is certainly a potential lineup we will see a lot of this season.
Building off that with that first 11 they showed us today: I think Aston and Gragg will continue to factor in. I think Hall and Davis will factor in, and I I think the other three receivers that will factor in are Ffrench, Tipton, and Mathews.
So who does that leave out at WR?: Smith, O'Neil, and Street.
And at RB?: Sibley and Salahuddin
And at TE/FB: Carrigan, Medure, and Mimes. Plus any walk-on fullback
That's just my guess, but that seems like the separation at this point.
-- The defense lined up in what I think was a third down packages. And there were a lot of interesting alignments there, though my view was skewed. If you know how the set up is, we have to stay on the perimeter of the fields, so I couldn't get a better look than from where I was standing. BUT, it looked like a three man front with Weaver, Hendrix AND Patrick Jones. It also looked like Wirginis, Zeise, AND Cam Bright. There were five rotating DB's for the sake of this particular defense.
But I thought the three defensive ends and Cam Bright out there together was noteworthy. Amir Watts said the defense is more of an "attacking" defense this year, and that group of personnel suggests that.
-- Once again I noticed Paris Ford was taking some handoffs and working with the receivers, and when he was on defense he was working with the corners, not safeties.
-- I saw Ollison and AJ Davis on either side of Pickett in one drill today. Are they going to play together? Could Ollison get some looks at H-Back/Fullback like has been in recent years? Seems possible.
