I am not jumping off a bridge after losing a game to a team that has some talent, a lot of length, and was about as hot with their shooting from 3 as you can get.

It was a matter of time. With the exception of Louisville, any ACC team can beat any other when one is hot and one is cold. I have said a ton of times we need to be more balanced offensively and disciplined.

The thing is this season we have some good offensive sets that we run as well as we can. The Spanish PnR is one the most common offensive sets that college and NBA teams run. But we are only able to run part of it because of Fede’s limited offensive skills. Zoom works great with the ball handoff with Burton because it makes it even easier for him to turn the corner and that action forces us to have spacing. It also is very hard to switch like FSU did on a handoff compared to a screen.

We move well without the ball when we are playing with energy. Greg Eliot is one of the best players I have seen at moving and relocating on he dribble drive so when it’s kicked to him he is almost always open. He makes it himself open. Hinson is a good example of a player that rarely moves or relocates that’s why his 3’s are almost always contested.

But overall, the reason we lost yesterday was not just because of their hot shooting or are poor shooting. We got undisciplined on our offensive stuff that works. Nelly took a bunch of shots that are not a part of the offense. Nike played a lot of one on one with everyone standing around watching. And of course we didn’t offensive rebound.

The key the rest of the way for me is can we stay focused and play more consistently as a team on offense within our system for extended periods of time. It’s fine if Burton or Nike go 1 on 1 but it can’t be the norm.

I think we will make those adjustments. Because I think Capel will hopefully come to the same conclusions and do better the next game. We can’t hope to win playing the offense yesterday the next 3 games.
