I never heard an attendance figure yesterday but the upper stands were nicely filled in for a Holiday weekend against an FCS opponent. 55,000,50,000......whatever but people arrived earlier and stayed later.

The Beer was a huge success with zero problems by my estimate. I sure saw about 35% of the crowd with one or two beers, it generated revenue to pay for the scholarships, there were no fights. I saw a few happy drunks that seemed a tad more enthusiastic on borderline nice plays. It was a financial and non-event success. Getting a beer was seemless as there were a ton of registers open. Their serving methods for drafts where it's filled from the bottom with a needle for "no head, ice cold" was great.

Field looked great. Dark Green with a perfect simple Logo at mid--field.

Simple thing but all the ushers in Pitt Logos was a nice touch. Little things like tat make one feel at home and not a visitor. Same with entry ways. Workers more friendly than I ever remember.

Tailgating to my eye looked much more involved than I remember in past years. My test in a Gold lot is how fast it fills up compared to game time. We are usually the first 10% that show up and we kept our usual schedule and were feeling late to the party yesterday in a good way. This might be a soft measurement for people's mood of the program but I would give it an A+. More tables, food, games being played and the mood of the fan base was fun and optimistic.

I sat next to a Villanova fan who happens to be a businessman who travels all over and has been to all kinds of College Football Events. He loved Heinz Field and thought it might be one of the nicest fields he has ever been to. I really pushed back on this one to measure him just trying to make me feel better. He noted the view was second to none. The seats were really comfortable. The technology and video was incredible for college. The newer fields ( for pros) makes one feel like they are walking into an aquarium or exhibit and Heinz found the balance of still feeling like you were outside and it pushed the limits of just watching raw football with having all the creature comforts.he went on and on that it's a shame we didn't have a warmer climate because the Hotel Situation was near perfect to accomadate huge events and so walkable from downtown. He was a no BS type of guy and went on about how we would be nuts to not want to play at Heinz. Coincidentally, he was doing business with UPMC this week, spent a lot of time in Oakland ( many visits over the years ) and said we might be overestimating a home field advantage on-campus. I gave him 10 reasons to be on-campus and he refuted every single one with why downtown. Interesting perspective.

One thing is so shockingly obvious. We can't have kid friendly games in front of Heinz. The music and BBQ sure makes it feel big time and not Chucky Cheese. I sure hope there is some food, entertainment, beer garden to meet friends in the weeks to come. Removing all the kid stuff is a must and I want to emphasize I'm a parent and our my friends all have kids.

Yesterday was a success. Really had a fun time with all the non-football things.

Great post.
Agree with everything you wrote.
Band was better - dance team was sexy -atmosphere walking in was great.
This administration is showing it knows what its doing.
I felt like yesterday was a celebration.

The Celebration feel is a good call along with the much improved band compared to just a few years ago. I always forget about "dotting the i in the Pitt script with the band is also a cool moment. Not anything like Ohio State but cool as it has a person with a Pitt connection and yesterday was a Veteran recently back from Afganistan. As an aside, the Cheer for the Military is always a nice touch. Having been to many other cities that do the same, Pittsburgh for some odd reason always seems to be a bit louder.

One other very noticeable thing, it was 0-0 for a while and in previous years, anger would be thrown at any coach not named Pat Narduzzi. There might have been a few grumbles and groans but a collective feeling of this will get figured out and fixed.

I had fun for a games that lacked a tremendous amount of highlight stuff.

Good assessment. Thought the parking lot "scene" felt more lively and full. Looks like people have started to buy the new gear. Beer sales is a great idea. Next week is going to be a zoo!

Anson- I know you've talked about this before... with your role on the advisory committee can you remind me what the discussions have been around tarping corner sections of the upper decks with Pitt insignia and rolling them back for high demand games? I don't see the downside and will definitely provide a more "full" atmosphere for most of the home games. Next year - when none of the PSU fans buy season tickets - we won't have an inflated season ticket sales total and can figure out the number of seats we really need and adjust the tarping as needed.

I have been in the tarping camp but yesterday was a little different. It's almost like the tickets were sold to scatter people in upper deck. If there were 50,000 people for Villanova, the Penn State effect on tickets is way overblown. If someone bought season tickets just to see Penn State, they certainly would have skipped yesterday's game. I believe 50,000 for Nova translates to 60,000 for Georgia Tech.

My fried pork cutlet sandwich with sausage, peppers, and mozzarella in the South Club was very "bleh". Edible, but certainly not paying $14-$16 again for something like that in the club. Guess thats what I get for going in early and not tailgating week 1.

The atmosphere outside the stadium was unbelievable. Between the tailgates in the parking lots and the Rib Fest to the band, it was a good time. Inside had a very good crowd for the opponent and the student section was impressive. I also loved pregame, much better than last season.

Yeah I find concessions and those types of bells and whistles are so much more important for baseball games, when you got a zillion homes games and such a slower pace. Though I agree about selling beer, to me you go to a football game to watch a football game and get into it. Food can be had at tailgate parties or restaurants before or after.

We always seem to debate about the upper endzone where I sit. No issues with beer although I am not for it. I will ay though the concession stands were not prepared for the crowd they had there, and wait lines were 20 min minimum. Expect 40 min waits this week, and if as hot as expected the beer will flow.
