By Mike White of the Post-Gazette (5/17/2018):

It was a little smack talk, er, text between friendly opponents. Aliquippa’s M.J. Devonshire picked up his phone Wednesday night to find a text message from Shady Side Academy’s Dino Tomlin. Their meeting in the WPIAL track championships was less than 24 hours away.

“He texted me and said, ‘Are you ready to take second?’” said Devonshire.

Devonshire laughed. Then he responded a day later with his feet.

Devonshire, a junior at Aliquippa, won the Class 2A 100-meter dash at the WPIAL track and field championships Thursday at Baldwin High School. Devonshire finished in 10.83 seconds and Tomlin was second at 11.01.

Maybe you’ve heard of Tomlin’s dad, Mike, who watched from the stands. As for Dino Tomlin and Devonshire, they are friends, football standouts at their schools and teammates on a 7 on 7 spring football team named Evolve. Their friendship — and rivalry — has evolved.

“We’ve been talking about this the last two weeks,” Devonshire said of their showdown. “We’ve been waiting to go against each other in something. We thought we might play each other in football, but we didn’t. It was good to go against him.

“When he texted me, I told him that he’ll be taking second and we know who’s taking first.”

Devonshire made a habit of taking firsts Thursday. He won the 200 with a time of 22.42 and also ran the anchor leg on Aliquippa’s winning 400 relay team. Not bad for someone who didn’t start running track until last year, and runs for a school that doesn’t have a track.

“He was going around here today saying he’s Secretariat and he’s going to win the triple crown,” Aliquippa coach Sherman McBride said with a laugh.

Aliquippa’s 400 relay team won for the fifth consecutive year and the 12th time since 2004. Besides Devonshire, the team consisted of Quantavius Smith, Davion Harris and Avante McKenzie. Devonshire is being recruited heavily in football as a defensive back. He said Ohio State, Indiana and West Virginia are his top schools right now.

Tomlin came back after the 100 and won the 300 hurdles with a time of 38.6.
