I don't know why The Snake's name is often omitted from discussions of the NFL's best QB's, but with the game on the line, it was hard to find a better QB anywhere. His battles with the great Steelers teams of the 1970's were legendary.

Death came following complications from colon cancer. He was diagnosed in February. He was 69.

Hated the Raiders but liked the Snake. RIP

Agreed. Amid that rivalry, had to admire or at least greatly respect that guy. Stabler / Bradshaw games were like two gunslingers. Sorry to hear.

As kids we would imitate Stabler's mannerisms and throwing motion. He and Fran Tarkenton were the QBs we always pretended to be.

Great qb....while even with some numbers that aren't so great
He beats pittsburgh one more time he is lock hof

Regardless Stabler is the only sb winning qb of the 70s not in hof
And unless misremembering he also won a mnc in college

A rare double for a qb

Stabler will always be remembered by local fans for his 30-yd touchdown scramble late in the 4th-quarter of the 1972 AFC playoff game, which set-up the scenario for the Steelers' famous Immaculate Reception play. And Stabler didn't even start that game; he was sent into the game to replace an ineffective Darryl Lamonica.

Stickum probably was so toxic that the raiders in the era have a different mortality expectation. Amazing what was allowed back in the day.

one word, snake, colonoscopy. early and often. he wrung out every ounce, available, in living a full, juicy life. didn't know until I read his biography that "Oakland Al", stabbed him in the back- on more than one occasion.

As a buddy of mine said, "It's surprising that his colon gave out before his liver did."

Stabler was a throw-back to another era - and a perfect mesh with the rest of his Raider teammates. If they would've worn black 'n gold, we would've loved 'em instead of hating 'em.

Snake led an epic comeback versus the Steelers in Week 1 in 1976. The Steelers were up, 28-14, with five minutes left and behind Stabler's passing scored 17 unanswered points to stun the Steelers. The defending champs were in a funk soonafter and started the year 1-4 before finding its bearings.

I still can see those guys with all that stickum. Lester Hayes, Dave Casper and Fred Biletnikoff. Those teams were badass….

I didn't grow up a Steelers fan, so I never hated the Raiders.

Stabler was about the only qb that could stand toe to toe with the steelers defense of the 70's. all of the others were either physically destroyed, or mentally wilted. he came to play, and put some drama into the games. rip.

He was a football player. Snake had a sixth sense for the game. Bobby Layne with long hair.
He's in my HOF.
Anyone remember his girlfriend the "Wonderfully Wicked Wanda"?
