O.T. -- Sad story about Mike McQueary...(link)

Mike did more than enough . The onus of this is on the three and Harmon.

Mike didn't stop the assault in progress. That is not more than enough. Mike didn't go to the police when he saw nothing was happening after he reported it. That is not more than enough. Mike reported it to his immediate supervisor. That is not more than enough.

Joe reported what was told to him to his immediate supervisor, what that enough? Was it more than enough? I am willing to bet most people would say no. I am not trying to defend or exonerate anyone involved, but I don't believe for one minute that McQueary should be treated as if he was a victim in all of this.

One thing that bothered me a bit about this story was the implication that McQueary is some hero that is despised by Penn State fans and administration for his whistleblowing and the reputation damage that resulted to the University. I can’t speak for the entire University community, but I can explain my despise for Mr McQueary, and it is the complete opposite. A whistleblower to me is an employee that reports an impropriety to his manager. When the manager then responds negatively or attempts to ignore the issue, the whistleblower then reports the violation to law enforcement. This must be done in a timely manner to prevent the continued illegal activity. First off, in the case of McQueary witnessing Sandusky raping a boy in the shower, I don’t think this qualifies as conduct of a coworker that should be 1st reported to a manger. This is so heinous, he should have immediately contacted law enforcement. But, even if you overlook that lack of judgment, how on earth can you forgive him for sitting on this for 10 years when he knows what he witnessed? For the sake of this argument, if we table a discussion of the failure by PSU administrators: how does McQueary allow Sandusky to continue molesting children for 10 years? During this time, all he did was leave a room when Sandusky entered? A whistleblower does not wait ten years. A whistleblower is not found by authorities and coerced to testify. He comes forward on his own volition. I detest McQueary because he lacked the courage to be a true whistleblower, and yet he is awarded $7.3 million for what he failed to do? I think you will find that the majority of PSU fans feel the same way, we have true sympathy for the victims, and blame McQueary for not taking the proper humanitarian action to prevent it, regardless of how it may have damaged the reputation of our University.

People are not under any legal obligation to stop a crime , period . Average folk aren't trained to intervene.

He reported it to Joe and everyone else dropped the ball . At trial people, singular or plural , could be either , will testify Mike asked them what was going on. He felt trapped.

As for villains , he's at the bottom of the list.

You're "far from an apologist," but here you are on a non-Penn State message board fulfilling that role as in the most stereotypical form of a cult member. It was far from just "a couple of people." The continuing defense of the morally reprehensible conduct of your university in these matters, the continued culture of worship of football and idolization of a despicable coach, and their continued efforts to whitewash history as a matter of the intransigence to change, impacts the view that the world has about your character. You willingly associate yourself with filth, and you suffer the consequences of such association.

you are laughable. I didn't defend anyone. In fact I said that the actions of Mike McQueary (a university employee at the time) were bad. I am appalled at the lack of action after the incident was reported. I just don't see how Mike McQueary gets a pass from people. It's your absurd hatred for all things Penn State makes you rejoice in a horrible scandal. I spend time on both schools boards because I married into a Pittsburgh sports family.

That is ridiculous. Mike McQueary is a big strong man who saw an old man abusing a boy in the shower. You don't have to be trained to stop that sort of thing. You just have to be brave and have a moral compass. I can understand that there are crimes that civilians shouldn't be a vigilante and intervene, but this isn't one of them.

Joe Paterno was not required to do anything other than report what was told to him to Tim Curley. So by your logic he isn't a villian in this either?

The answer to why they didn't write this before is simple: Until the trial, no one had the job-related testimony or the supporting evidence from the lawsuit exhibits. Without that, the story has no details and no narrative arc.
Good points. But it was no secret that Big Red couldn't find a decent job - he received no support from people who were in the position of assisting him. A story focusing on that would've been pertinent from a human interest point-of-view.

If the people up in Nitland really cared about the victims, they would've actively supported the only person in their athletic department who cared about getting Sandusky's "proclivities" out there.

If the dateline is accurate, Paterno knew what Sandusky was all about even before McQueary reported what he saw to Joe. Basically, Big Red's telling Joe as a witness only confirmed what Joe already knew.

So that would make Joe much more the villain that McQueary ever was - if he was at all.

Do you really think people are rejoicing in what happened? And from what I can tell, most here agree MM could have and should have done more. He shouldn't get a free pass but at the same time he shouldn't be vilified when the coach he reported the incident to is still held in such high regard at the university. I think that disparity is what pisses people off. People are willing to bash MM pretty harshly while JoePa is portrayed as a man who maybe could have done more but was still a good person. Can't have it both ways.

there is no point in that. I don't know any more about who knew what and when than you do. The only one we know exactly how they found out and when is Mike McQueary. He let it continue and I have no respect for that.

I am not from Pennsylvania originally and , I didn't see my first college football game until 1994 when I was a sophomore. So most of the glory days of Penn State football and Joe Paterno where before my time. Since I have been a fan, the Penn State - Pitt rivalry has been almost non existent. I am far from an apologist for anything that happened relating to Sandusky. I am a Penn State graduate and the misdeeds of a couple people, even powerful people, do not change what I have accomplished in my academic and professional career. Some of the posters here revel in the fact that there was a scandal, any scandal, at Penn State. You refer to us as Ped State and rejoice when any news comes out harmful to the university. Pedophiles are in all walks of life and in every community. Most are never detected and reported. Most are never criminally charged. The best chance of stopping one is with an eye witness account. Mike had that chance and did nothing.

Jerry is that you ...

I think that we are thinking the same way. I don't see why people give McQueary a pass and you can't see why people give Paterno a pass. You are absolutely right, there should be consistency.

Also, I think when a fan base refers to Penn State as Ped State then yes they are rejoicing in it. I didn't mean to imply that all Pitt fans rejoice in it, but there are a vocal minority of those that do enjoy bringing down Joe Paterno and Penn State. As I mentioned before, I don't have history on the whole Joe Paterno / Pitt problems and animosity.

My wife just informed me that she doesn't believe MM for a few reasons, one she went to school with him and remembers one class, in particular of a few, where Mike was arrogant towards a professor and other administrators. His father was seen constantly talking to said professor many times. Now I remember a few players at Pitt doing the same in my classes but they were mostly joking around.

Another reason was, he thought he was gods gift to women. Always hitting on women even when they were with a significant other.

Last, she said he's known to be a notorious gambler when playing and as a coach. After she said that I told her she was full of it and she then proceed to tell me to look it up.

Why are women right? SMH

Yeah, though I still think Joe was more culpable than MM given the authority and power he wielded. I don't know what else he knew beyond that incident but he could have gotten the investigation started in 2001 no doubt. Then he and MM both come out of this story as stand up men.

As for the hatred for PSU...its a rivalry so of course you'll have that. The dislike for Paterno comes from his arrogance towards Pitt and his role in extinguishing the annual game.

It's not ridiculous. Have you ever witnessed a violent crime or other shocking situation ?
Trained people often freeze. It's not uncommon to be shocked and not act in the best or most efficient way. It's why professionals train.

Joe has less culpability than the other three and Harmon, but could have exerted pressure to do something different . Especially when they all were aware of 98, which McQueary wasn't.

As for any classroom arrogance , that means zip. Testimony of criminals is often used to convict people . As in a lot. What matters is the testimony believable and does it hold up to questioning .

if you don't have history as you say... is that ignorance ?
will always be paturdo, peddsate... both fitting.

You better check on that. There has been a lot of suggestion ever since this case came out that you are obligated to report child abuse, even if you aren't trained. For example, if you are a computer technician, and you find child porn on a computer, you are obligated to report it to the police, even though you aren't trained.

Pitter you hit the nail on the head,Mr McQueary doesn't have a halo over his head.He made a few other mistakes in his life beside not stopping Jerry!

If Joe hadn't ignored the victim that told him about Sandusky in the 70s the incident with McQueary never would have happened. But its all good, he probably won the football game he had to worry about! Bring back the statue!

I don't know McQueary from Adam...maybe he's not a saint....maybe he's got flaws.

But that doesn't explain why he'd tell a blatant, over-the-top lie about seeing Jerry Sandusky sexually assaulting a child in a Penn State shower room. And Penn State (via head coach Joe Paterno) did hire him as a full-time assistant coach afterward.

The MM changing his testimony story is one of the classic PEDO cultist talking points. FAct is regardless of subtle nuances MM has always stated that JErr bear was alone naked in a shower with a young boy on a Friday evening with no one around. Now maybe that's normal and not a crime in happy valley but for the rest of the sane world it's not

No doubt MM was a coward for not going directly to the police. CLearly he knew doing that was career suicude as Paturdo was the law and judge in. Happy valley. He knew he'd get thrown under the bus much like the PEDOs did at his trial. Football is king at PSU. Anyone who gets in the way of the programs success is just considered collateral damage

This is exactly correct. MM did what he was trained to do in that situation---go tell Joe. Now he was led to believe during worship time at PSU that Joe the almighty was God and he would always do the right thing. MM had no way of knowing that Joe was the cowardly wizard behind the curtain and not the great man the football media guide scripture and those shouting from the pulpit led him to believe.

MM thought that Joe would know best what to do. Joe did know best what to do. Unfortunately rat face didn't do it because Joe was what Joe was and that was despicable.

I have been trained in mandatory reporting . The law was not the same then . And no law requires you to physically intervene .

As for the rest, the devil is in the details . These will be spelled out in January. McQueary was legally off the hook when he reported it to his supervisors who allegedly know how to use phones . He did follow up with coaches after the report and was rebuffed .

Now the issue is knowledge of 98 and McQueary's report. And that's why there's a legal mess . There is no simplistic you can't have it both ways here.

This is pretty funny. According to the nitters, McQueary should have done more, but Paterno did enough. These people crack me up.

Nitters only care about winning football games. That trumps everything, including enabling a football coach who was a pedophile.

So if Mr McQueary was legally off the hook, wasnt Joe legally off the hook when he told his Supervisors?????????

Joe was the most powerful man in not only Centre County, but the entire state. He was The Don, and everything went through him. You cannot change history.

I can't give McQueary a pass because of his work environment. He was there in the moment and he could have saved a child from a horrible fate and he didn't. The world honors people who make the right choice. If he did, then he would have had a career and a life. At best, you are saying he let the child be abused to save himself. That is the exact thing that you are saying that Paterno did. Why should McQueary get a pass?
Maybe he shouldn't. But the rest of them certainly shouldn't and Joe is made out to be a martyr in the whole affair.

This is pretty funny. According to the nitters, McQueary should have done more, but Paterno did enough. These people crack me up.

This nitter thinks that both should have done more. McQueary says he saw what he thought was a child being raped. Paterno was told a cleansed version of that story. I get the outrage. But be careful when you tag McQueary as the hero, and Paterno as the evil villain, when neither followed up enough on the issue. And many forget that Paterno did follow-up with McQueary asking him if he was OK with how it was handled, according to McQueary.

And many forget that Paterno did follow-up with McQueary asking him if he was OK with how it was handled, according to McQueary.
But it's wasn't McQueary's call to make as to whether it was handled sufficiently or not. Paterno was the boss-man...he shouldn't be asking a subordinate such a question.

Oh yes and where are the rest of the PSU faithful who heard stories, etc. and did nothing ?? Including the university administration. The world does NOT always honor those who make the "right choice". You are naïve.

This is where you guys always fail to understand. Yes, Paterno did everything he was required to do by law. No one here ever disputed that. Where you just don't get it is where he failed to live up to his own standards and failed to use all the power he had to put an end to it. He preached "success with honor" and "going that extra mile" and all that other garbage and you guys ate up all that he shoveled.

He was the most powerful and influential man in State College, probably the entire state. With all that he did the minimal he had to do. Did he do the minimal for his football players, for the team, for the program, for the university? Did he do what he had to do and that's all or did he go that extra mile when it came to Penn State and football.

You people bought "success with honor" and patterned your lives after him, what he stood for, the things he said, but when time came to live up to his own expectations he didn't do it. He failed. You nitters threw all that crap in our faces with your arrogance for all those years and Pitt fans hated you for it, not for the success of your program, but your arrogance and when all this happened you all looked like fools.

If Paterno was such a great man like you said, he would have done more than the minimal under the law. When it came to his football players he did. You expect more from McQueary than you did Paterno, you are hypocrites.

So if Mr McQueary was legally off the hook, wasnt Joe legally off the hook when he told his Supervisors?????????

I never once exonerated MM, I'm just pointing out that most nitters drill MM for not doing more yet let Paterno off the hook for the same. Hypocrites.

Great post. When it came time for St Joe to walk the talk at best he stuck his head in the sand and likely was actively involved in sweeping it under the rug.

I believe that's what he meant when he said it was one of the great sorrows of his life because he knew the reputation he worked hard to create was trashed forever. I don't believe he was near as distraught about the many young boys lives that were destroyed because of his actions but more self pity knowing he was exposed for the fraud he ended up being

Like I said before if this was a cover up it was the worst cover up in the history of cover ups!If Joe wanted to cover this up why did he tell other people????If I'm covering up something(and I have) I don't tell anyone ,I mean Noone not even the CAPTAIN!And then the ones Joe told, told other people, great cover-up guys! Here's a question for you Pitters, just what was Joe covering up in this cover up???What the hell did Jerry in a shower have to do with Psu football in 2001 or 2002 whenever Mr McQueary saw him!You all are magna cum laude's from Pitt and I had. 2.5gpa from Cal State of Pa,enlighten me!

9,at least I know my intelligent level some on here highly overestimated theirs!Present company not included of course.

What is so hard to understand. When all of this began no one outside of State College knew anything that went on there. He did a great job of covering it up when he had control of the media and everything else in the 1970's and 1980's. But when the internet became available he could no longer control the media or anything else that went on there.
