Brett Brumbaugh was arrested Thursday by South Fayette Township Police and was charged with resisting arrest, loitering and prowling at nighttime.
Brett Brumbaugh, who became the PIAA’s all-time leading passer as a senior quarterback at South Fayette, was arrested early Thursday morning by South Fayette Township police after a foot chase that ended at a golf course.
Brumbaugh, 18, was charged with resisting arrest and loitering and prowling at nighttime – a third-degree misdemeanor. The Duquesne University football recruit was arraigned Thursday afternoon and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday.
Phone messages to South Fayette football coach Joe Rossi and Brett Brumbaugh were not returned. Duquesne head coach Jerry Schmitt released a statement Friday morning.
“I am aware of the incident and am in the process of gathering information,” Schmitt said. “It would be premature to comment any further at this time.”
According to the police report, a resident near Hickory Heights Golf Club in Bridgeville was awakened by his barking dog. He told police when he looked out his window, he spotted two males in his driveway.
When officers arrived, they saw two males run from the resident’s front yard. The officers pursued the suspects through several yards until they jumped a fence in the complaintant’s backyard in an attempt to escape through the golf course. They fled through the course until another responding officer encountered them behind the course’s clubhouse. They fled once again and split up – one dashed toward houses on the opposite end of the golf course while the other fled to a wooded area.
More officers were called and a K-9 unit arrived to surround the wooded area, but the suspect would not comply when asked to surrender to authorities. Officer John Leininger entered the brush, where he finally coerced the suspect, later identified as Brumbaugh, to exit the woods at 1:07 a.m.
According to the police report, once Brumbaugh was taken back to the police station, he identified the other suspect, who could not be located. Police sent a summons in the mail to the other suspect, who will be charged with resisting arrest, loitering and prowling at nighttime.
Sam Depe III, owner and director of operations at Hickory Heights Golf Club, said the course was vandalized overnight, including damage to the greens, and a large amount of alcohol containers were found on the premises. Depe felt the damage was not done by just two people. He said at least one teenager was found on the course as late as 8 a.m. Thursday.
Police are still investigating the damage to the course, which Depe described as minimal.
A two-time Observer-Reporter Player of the Year and the O-R’s Athlete of the Year as a junior, Brumbaugh threw for 11,084 yards and 127 career touchdown passes while completing 63 percent of his throws. He led South Fayette to 32 consecutive victories during his junior and senior seasons, which included back-to-back WPIAL and PIAA championships.
Brumbaugh was expected to be redshirted at Duquesne this fall and was named the MVP at the Big 33 Classic last Saturday in Hershey.
