Odd that IUP has received so little coverage playing for a natl. champ?

From what I can tell, there seemed to be little coverage in local media sites. Don't know if there is much on airwaves in Western PA.

Remember, IUP is coached by Joe Lombardi and Pitt beat IUP 72-58 in exhibition play this year.

They finished tied for second in the PSAC West (3rd seed in tourney) and lost to Ganon in the PSAC championship.

...UPJ, btw, finished 6th in the PSAC West.

BTW, Cal won the DII women's basketball championship...little coverage as well for that.

Good year for PSAC hoops...although it looks like IUP is going to go down in the championship game.

As a guy that grew up in Indiana, I think part of it can be explained by the fact that the P-G stopped circulation in Indiana County a number of years ago. You cannot even buy a Sunday edition of the P-G in Indiana any more. There has been a lot of coverage in the Indiana Gazette...but that is not saying much--as the Pitt News is on par or better when it comes to original journalsim. Hail to Pitt!

Re: Reply

If IUP or Cal U were PSU branch campuses, I bet the PG would be covering the games.

The PG did have.....

game stories on both the Cal women and the IUP men all week long. And preview type stories for both on the day of each championship game. I don't know why a D2 team would "deserve" any more coverage than what they got.

It's a major league sports town. Three teams, all with a chance to contend. Little time or space to talk about anything else.

I get the Sunday PG every week at the Sheetz in Windber [no fooling]. Can't believe Indiana has sunk below Windber.

I get it at the Sheetz in Bedford driving home Sunday morning after Pitt football games.

Pretty sure the P-G is poorly run. My parents had home deliver of the P-G in Indiana for years. The P-G stopped that...and they were left with picking up the P-G at Sheetz or the Bi-Low. Then they cut back daily circulation and went to strictly Sunday. Cut Sunday out a couple of years ago. Pretty pathetic since it is only 60 miles to the 'Burgh. The Indiana Gazette is incredibly pathetic...mostly just AP feed stories. Oh well...times change. Hail to Pitt!

There was a lot of press in Erie but then again Gannon beat the Cal women twice this year and the men's team won against IUP in a fantastic game to win their conference championship a couple of weeks ago. Cal women won the NCAA II Championship and IUP lost in the finals. Also the Times News up here is not part of the Post-Gazette. Lol.

Covering college teams almost always requires a hard working and knowledgeable sport department.
The "Pgh Media" is neither.
The PG is merely the most visible of the pack.
In pro sports, each league feeds the media. All the work is done by the leagues.
PSU does the same thing...Pitt is actually pretty good at it too, but once you get out of D1, those schools don't have the money for it.
