Ok, I officially think this team is much better than Stallings last team..... and arrow is up...

the point still holds true. West and Bickerstaff make your team better, but they aren't leading you to an NCAAT birth.

please go back to when the transfer discussion started.

@BballinsiderfromPitt said you need two DUDES and you're set.

my point is that the transfers we had a shot at don't fit the description of DUDES.

I'm not arguing that those two kids do or don't make us better... I am arguing that they absolutely don't lead us to an NCAAT birth.
I don’t think he was limiting the 2 Dudes to the transfer portal.

He was saying 2 stars period.

I think it is actually 3, but I don’t like to quibble.

Nah. For some reason you have this like attitude that we are lucky to have Capel or something.

There are plenty of coaches out there hungry to get to the top of CBB who would gladly take $3-5 mil a year with a clean slate to run the program however they want. And would have us in a better spot than we are now in Year 2.
Agree

Lol I think a good coach only needs 2 real dudes yeah. Take Mike Anderson. He has two DUDES in posh and Julian. They’re gonna make the tournament with mostly replacement level players otherwise. And the Big East is as good of a league as ACC this year.

And yes, Toney is a high level transfer. I think X is a high level transfer. Champ is a borderline nba guy. And we were in decent shape to make a run at the tournament and completely fell apart and lost all 3. As @pittjas mentioned, that’s kind of the point. He hasn’t been able to manage a team, probably ever since VCU and I don’t care he was able to grab Blake Griffin 15 years ago because his brother was already on campus.

Tre Mitchell, who I don’t think he could’ve landed, mother lives in pittsburgh and they couldn’t even get a visit. He’s a high level transfer. Why are we not involved?

He has the nicest facilities any Pitt coach has ever had. The highest budget. The highest recruiting budget. The highest assistant pool budget (double Jamie’s) and wasted 400k,350 and 300 on his brother and friends. I’m sorry that 14th or 15th in a down ACC isnt enough for me in year 4.

You say who could turn things around so quickly? BC made imo a bad hire. They have a better Pg coming in then we’ve ever had at Pitt under Capel. Wake Forest is a borderline Tournament team in year 2.

Uncommon courage, brick by brick, we keep our promises whatever else Bs slogans are designed to distract from the actual on court results. It’s Todd Graham part two.

20 wins because of two below average deeply flawed guards!? Holy shit, I need to change dealers. My stuff isn’t strong enough.

Also, I’m surprised Femi didn’t put his name in the portal after yesterday. Not gonna get any better than that. I guess the second the buzzer sounds on Tuesday, March 8th will be soon enough.

I will say this, there is a small chance they keep Femi at this point. He really likes Pittsburgh. As long as there is a coaching change, they’ll have a chance!
My question to you why do you keep up with the anti-Pitt rhetoric ? What’s your agenda ?

Do you personally know Femi ? Has he expressed his displeasure to you about his coach ?

Last week he sucked now he’s a prized portal player !

You don’t lose a guy who goes to the NBA . At a school like Pitt that’s an accomplishment!

You don’t lose a guy who quits on his teammates.

Losing a guy whose constantly threatening to leave and horns in on a teammates girl is a cancer for a program no matter how good he plays .

your rebuttle doesn't dispute what I said.

I said you'll need to pay a lot more than what Capel is making now to make the NCAAT in two years or less.

Plenty of guys would come here for Capel's money. Plenty of guys could turn this around at his pay grade. No doubt about it. It's the timeline that doesn't jive with a lot of folks. They want results now.. if you want results now, you need to double his salary.

Btw @TD_6082 you were right on Narduzzi, I was wrong. I couldn’t be happier and I hope we do it again next year. Best season and most enjoyable of my lifetime.
Haha. Well, I'd be totally lying if I told you I saw an ACC Championship in the near future.

I just think Narduzzi does a great job developing talent & getting his guys to fight almost every week. On top of that, I think he has shown ability to manage a program with everything that entails.

The program caught a break this year when Pickett decided to comeback & Clemson came back down to earth. When you have a program on the cusp of taking it to another level, I always think the best philosophy is to let the coach knocking on the door continue to try to knock it down. That's the guy that has the best pulse on what needs to happen to get over the hump. Just refrain from hitting the reset button when the program is fairly close, I think gives the program a much better chance for success.

It doesn’t matter who is with whose girlfriend, who gets arrested, who transfers, who gets hurt or Covid, Covid, Covid.

He was hired to produce, he hasn’t.

what you're saying about Wake and BC is exactly what you could've said about Capel and Pitt years 1, 2 and 3.

each winter we had high hopes and things looked great. We all know what happened. Let's pump the breaks on the banners being put up in Wake's gym. Lets see how the ACC plays out first.

For reference, Wake pays Steve Forbes 1.5 million less than Capel. And his salary pool for assistants is around 3/4 of Capel’s. So there’s that.

I’d have to do some research more than likely similar to Wake’s than ours. Capel is making top 5-6 in ACC money.

comparing him to other coaches is irrelevant. Pitt is head and shoulders the least attractive position in the conference. It's in a pro city and gets hardly covered. It's not located in a recruiting hot bed. It's cold. The program has been in shambles.

of course they're going to have to pay more to get coaches than other schools would have to.

1) no one else was hiring Capel, especially when she gave him that ridiculous extension. The only school he would’ve left for is Duke and we couldn’t give him enough to keep him away from Duke.

2) Pitt is a better job than BC, Wake and around or equal to, VT, Miami, Georgia Tech, Clemson. Syracuse without Beoheim? Who knows. But Pitt fans are DYING for a hoops team to support. I told someone in the Duquesne athletic department how STUPID it was to redo their court instead of just playing at consol and trying to be elite to be Pittsburgh’s team. There is a smaller contingent of fans, but there’s enough fans to have consistent and fun crowds if we could ever be good again. And the facilities are on par with most of the league now, the salaries are top 1/3 and there’s no amount of money they won’t spend to be good.

Capel just flat out sucks and frankly, I don’t think he cares anymore.

I’m not arguing the point that he’s been a disappointment, but guys move on . Some better themselves like Justin , others just aren’t happy campers and good teammates.

No coach can predict what every kid he recruits will be like once they’re on campus .

JD couldn’t figure out a way to keep either Birch or Adams , it happens .

The craziest part of this entire thread.

Brandin Knights sophomore numbers at Pitt, after he won 13 games total for the entire season as a freshmen.

9.2ppg
5.5 apg
3.3 rpg
38% Fg %
25% 3 point %
62% FT %

Those numbers across the board is about where Femi is right now and Ricardo Greer was with Knight his first 2 years, a 2 time All Big East Selection. Along with Page, Brown, Zavackas, etc.

The blueprint that Howland put into place was to win with defense, the same blueprint Pitt is trying to use right now. If the defense plays the way it has played the last 6 basketball games straight, a defense that has held 6 teams to an average of 57 points per game which is around 10th best in the country for points allowed over that stretch, then a foundation will have been put into place. If the defense fully collapses like it did with Xavier Johnson last year as the season continued, then moving on from Capel should be considered. If the defense holds ground the rest of the year like it has the last 6 games, this team will win some acc games and there is a potential future with the current core here.

I expect this team to remain very competitive unless a significant losing streak starts and players start to quit. There has been zero signs of any player on the current team quitting. And the players, so far, have seemed to embrace winning with defense and mucking up the game to win ugly while frustrating opposing offenses, which I personally like.

If there wasnt substantial improvement with the defense thus far this season, then nothing what I wrote above matters. But its been proven that when a team has a foundation built on defense, like our past history starting with Knight and Howland, in time, you can win a lot of games.

Knight had losing seasons his first 2 years in college in Big East play. In fact, in Knights first year, he was 5-11 in Big East play with 13 wins total on the season.

Knight as a senior was not the same player as Knight as a freshmen and sophomore.

Pitt was the hottest ticket in town in the 2000s. NFL/NHL players courtside. #1 seeds. Full arenas. One of the better student sections in the country.

Get out of here with that BS. Some of that was luck and timing and I don’t expect any coach to replicate that.. but head and shoulders worst job in the conference???

the extension wasn't that bad at the time. It really wasn't. Looks terrible now.. but after year 2 everyone was on the bandwagon.

it's clearly difficult to recruit here. Cuse without Boeheim will still recruit. Syracuse hoops is forever blessed because of Boeheim.. regardless of if he's there or not.

time will tell. I don't think Jeff sucks. I'm very disappointed this is where we are. i don't want to be here in year 4. Not at all what I envisioned. Agree or not he's caught a ton of bad breaks. His fault or not, they've been bad breaks and there's a lot of them.

Pitt was almost over the hump to start year 3. They were super close. Hugley getting arrested was the worst break ever. They didn't make it and they went backwards the whole way back down.

I'd give him another run at it. time will tell, but I think he's the guy if given more time. You can easily make the case he doesn't deserve more time. I can't blame you.

15 years ago means nothing right now. We are FAR away from those days.

We've won 19 conference games the last 5 years. That's less than 4 a year.

4 years ago our facilities were so bad that they are still having to make upgrades today to catch up.

I don't know of a much worse situation to be in out the ACC. Pitt has a high ceiling, but right now, this job is a joke. We've been a dumpster fire the last 5 years.

Haha it’s not a joke. What Capel is doing is a joke. Plenty of coaches would love this job. Which you’ll see soon when we get some good candidates here in a couple months.

And no that doesn’t mean we are going to take away a successful P5 sitting coach or anything. But we can certainly get our own Mike Young/Stevr Forbes and give them a solid assistant budget. I am 100% confident in doing so the replacement could AT LEAST get us to the NIT once in 4 years.

Capel has to prove it over the full season and not 6 games....

However,

Capel just cant say, well, we will play turtle speed the whole game and hope to win by keeping the score low. Bad Teams that play slow in tempo still get blown out too. Just because you are slow in tempo doesn't necessarily mean you have a good defense. It helps keeping the points down, but you still have to defend!

Im not making any guarantee on anything with regard to the rest of the season. What I am saying is, 6 straight games is a long enough trend to getting something established with taking the luck factor out of it, especially with how young this team is. It needs to be sustained starting with Notre Dame next game to make it 7 straight games of good defense.

A quality Coach will have a commitment to defense. Like Howland. Like Dixon. Like Tony Bennett. Like Chris Beard. If thats our identity, play slow, play tough, and defend at all costs, then lets run with it and see where it gets us this year. But it needs to happen almost every game.

Curious. How much do you think a philosophy to win with defense existed with Capel before this year?

maybe, but if we're starting the clock now, Capel can get us there quicker than 4 years.

The thing you are missing here is how dead the program is and how hard it is to recruit off that. That is why I’m so against bringing him back. A new coach brings that new recruiting and energy boost in the program.

Capel had that. And he failed to capitalize on it. X, Trey, Toney was a really good start. And the program had a lot of momentum the first two years.

But he took that and never made an NIT or NCAAT. Or even a .500 conf record. It’s basically impossible to recover from that.

You keep talking about this path he has… and you’re right. But your ignoring how hard it will be to take that path. We need high impact ACC players. Like this year Toney/Champ/X level. So either a Top 75 kid like Mintz or some really really good transfers. Not Burton or Gueye. Difference makers.

The only way that’s happening at this point is if he shakes up the assistant coaches. If he was willing to do that, I’d be ok with 1 more year. But protecting his assts and brother is more importabt to him than Pitt’s success.

So at this point there aren’t really any impact HS recruits left. None considering Pitt. And we really think we’re going to land a HIGH IMPACT transfer? To a team that will finish the season with around 10 total wins?

That all seems so so unlikely. I mean surely it’s a possibility but you have to acknowledge how unlikely it is.

So then we have to hope every single player eligible comes back. Which also is unlikely given the CBB stats And Capel’s history.

But we’ll pretend we have this team back with a few replacement level transfers added… we really think that team, which is essentially the team picked 14th this year, is suddenly going to be a Top 6 ACC team next year?

I mean surely they could improve and go like 7-13 in conference. But that’s the whole point. In Year 5 that’s not good enough, so if that’s what you are looking at for next year, you might as well just cut ties this year and get a head start on the next phase.

Not to mention that firing him a year earlier gives you a better chance to hire “your guy” as extra cycle just gives more openings and another year on the resume of some younger coaches like the CSU coach.

To sum it all up, taking all factors into consideration, I think all could agree that after next year there’s about a 95% chance Capel needs to be fired. So why in the hell waste everybody’s time and money next year?

Maybe but I like Hugley. If he stays plus the other 4, I might be ok with 1 last chance.

For Capel to get a year 6 he needs to make the NCAAT this year or next. It’s obviously not happening this year. What we have currently isn’t enough to come close next year. We need high impact pieces. do you have faith in him getting them? If you do thwn I’m ok with 1 more. I don’t.
