** It’s very clear that this season will require the utmost patience and perspective if I hope to enjoy it whatsoever.

** Of course, I’m speaking of what it will be like coaching my Son’s 7th and 8th grade team this year.

** I’m a little late on my post game internet drivels this evening as I had to first handle the more important duty of the day guiding our second practice of the season.

** When coaching recreational league basketball, often you’ll take great pleasure at points in your season when the guys finally pick up something you’ve been stressing for weeks. Or it’s always a great thrill to see a young man on your team find some new success, especially one who has struggled in the past.

** Most importantly, it’s always best never to get too caught up in whether you win or lose on the scoreboard, especially if many tinier wins are scooped up along the way.

** Today’s game against the Cowboys offered a few such tiny wins for our Panthers. Had this game looked anything like the lousy effort against the Lions, there may not have been any Panther fans with enough patience to continue.

** And perhaps only the perspective offered by the shadow of a 31 point loss makes a 6 point demise seem OK. But like it or not, that is the best world view that this season can offer us. For now, I suggest we take it.

** On the good side of this day, Marcus Carr proved that he looks exactly like he should look as a talented freshman whose inconsistency should be considered consistent. Marcus is still due for some better games this year, along with an equal handful of worse ones.

** For another day, Mr. Stevenson demonstrated his legitimacy. The challenge for his season is for the coaching staff to do a better job getting the most out of him, something I don’t think they’ve yet figured out how to do.

** And while I don’t think the coaching staff’s work was overly noteworthy to the positive end, our men were ready to compete today. Some teams might not have recovered to battle as readily as we did today after what happened the night before, and the staff deserves some credit for this.

** Additionally, I was pleasantly surprised that the battle continued to the final seconds. When the score reached near ten in the second half, I was ready for the fold. It never came.

** That’s the positivity which only perspective can provide. The harsh realities of our situation still tell some other stories.

** Despite a better team effort, there is still little evidence that anyone besides our top four will be able to make any significant contribution come ACC time.

** And despite hitting his first three of the year, I can’t imagine how or why Kene should be shooting four of them in a game. That really can’t be the game plan, can it?

** This is especially true of a team who is obviously so very dreadful in the art of rebounding, especially on the offensive end.

** Through five games, our Panthers have managed 37 offensive rebounds. Forgoing the 6 team rebounds on our end, only 31 others have been grabbed by Panther hands. Ryan has grabbed just over half of those. Think about that. The other 11 Panthers have 15 offensive rebounds in five games.

** So unlike my Son’s 7th and 8th grade team, despite how much perspective and patience we fans can muster, wins and losses for our Panthers do ultimately matter.

** And for me, the patience and perspective I’m employing will feel more prudent if we win our next four at home as we absolutely should. A stutter on that road and this loss becomes tougher to swallow.

** I regret that following the Lehigh game, I won’t be there in person to root on our Panthers in the next three. My coaching duties will keep me from doing so.

** But I do hope more Panther fans will show up to support our team than we saw for the first two games. Our team needs as many friends with patience and perspective as they can get.

Dreaded Nitter here. Saw both your games. Unbelievable turnaround for Panthers today on both ends of the floor. Still a talent deficit, but Carr and Stevenson looked legit high major this afternoon.

One of the hardest things for young players to understand about college hoops is that if you don’t bring your A-level intensity, there's a pretty good chance you get pasted. (Unless you’re loaded with lottery picks and other future pros.)

The Panthers seemed engaged from the get-go today and executed a lot better as well.

Sorry to interrupt ...

They still stink. They just competed harder this game which I guess in a season so far of awfulness it was a glimmer of light.

Thanks for the perspective

DT do you see the turnover problem improving as the season goes on? I feel like that is a problem, in some ways, that can be improved with experience. I'm pretty skeptical about the rebounding though.

Again, at this point I am looking for at least glimpses of individuals who can actually play at this level. Carr and Stevenson, true Fr, show these glimpses that they definitely can. JWF can too, but he is a Jr. Other than that?????

Bigs are slower to develop ie.. Gary McGhee . Some guys are ready for the next level , some need an adjustment period .....and some are overmatched . The solution is patience since none of these guys were can’t miss recruits .

I don't mean to be cynical when I say this but we need to expect EVERY problem to continue as the season goes on.

I don't think we are quite prepared for what a single digit win season looks like. It's likely we won't see significant improvement in any particular area. And lets not forget how much better the competition is going to get in the ACC.

And while we will improve in some ways, other teams are getting better too.

Still, we are going to have really tough games with turnovers against teams who really pressure our guards. Millie has improved, but he still has a bit of a loose handle.

Marcus also has some bad habits (handling double teams, picking up his dribble) and it's going to take more than a couple of months to rid himself of these.

At this point, I have to admit I was wrong about Milligan. He has played more and pretty well. He has only got in trouble when he has gotten a little too fancy or tried to do too much. It really hurt with about 6 minutes left in the Montana game.

Looking towards next year, Stevenson, Carr and Frame look like legit players and Ellison seems like an exciting player. The Juco kid should be able to provide some relief for Carr. I'm hoping Stewart can get his shot together before the end of the year. We could have a competitive group of guards for next season! There appears to be nothing down low right now. I hope Golden can come in and contribute right away. Its still early, maybe one of the Nigerians can develop but right now, both look like place-holders who could be gone as early as next year if recruiting picks up. I hope recruiting does pick up. We need a center BAD!

I think the thing that infuriates me the most is when we jack up a perimeter shot there isn't a Panther to be found anywhere in the paint that can even contest for a rebound. Many times it seems as if when the shot goes up all 4 other players sprint back on defense. You can't get rebounds if you aren't there to compete for them. And by the way, it would be nice if we actually boxed out instead of simply turning our backs.

As much as I hate the lack of offensive rebounding, I have to concede Stallings might be doing the right thing. I don't know if this team could be even an average rebounding team if that was their primary focus. On the other hand, they do have some perimeter players who are decent shooters. Maybe hoping for a good shooting game and preventing run outs might be their best hope. Having five weak rebounders crashing the offensive boards and it might look like the opponent is running layup drills.

Agree with the above, DT. But even if there is some improvement in other areas, the one thing that looks to be incapable of being fixed, at least this year, is the rebounding. Just don't see where it's going to come from.

Not much sense in scrutinizing a lot of statistics. But a couple general things stood out at a quick glance. They show how the lack of rebounding is so devastating to this team

Pitt shot 50.9% from the field overall for the game. OSU shot 37.9% from the field. But OSU had 13 more FG attempts because of their 44 - 28 rebounding advantage. Including a 20 - 5 advantage for OSU on the offensive glass. The one sequence where OSU scored after their 5th chance on one possession is emblematic of this Pitt teams' inability to rebound on either end of the floor. With OSU taking 13 more shots and shooting just 38% from the field Pitt had plenty of opportunities for defensive boards. But they just can't get them. On the offensive glass? Pitt rarely even tries for them. Often they all just concede the rebound and fall back. Think they'd have at least 1 guy try to crash from the weak side?

One other thing that jumped out: Pitt was 23 - 33 from the floor from INSIDE the arc. PDG! But just 4 - 20 from 3. So maybe some more focus on at least trying to attack inside for higher percentage shots - or at least to get to the FT line - may be worth more of a try. Not though the post, because Pitt has no threat there. But on drives, or drive, draw and dish type plays. Thought Pitt at least did a somewhat better job of recognizing the defensive overplays on the ball handlers out front and making backdoor cuts for opportunities in the 2H.

Don’t you know that people on this board all know more about bb than that idiot . What’s he done other than coach bb at a pretty high level for all his adult life . How dare you question the knowledge on this board , next your going to tell me he should recruit better players !

I hear what you are saying and I can't argue that it wouldn't go down that way. However, Stallings should be teaching these kids the "right" way of doing things and getting them into a mindset for down the road. Don't reinforce bad habits now when they are young.

They may not have the height, strength, experience, or quickness to outrebound many teams but they can still work on "positional balance" in the offensive end which will help limit run outs for the opposition. They should be learning that anyway.

You are really good at this.

Good luck with your team.

Who said anything about 5 men crashing the boards. It isn't either or. 5 guys running away from the boards is insanity. you have to contest for rebounds in some way shape or form. That is basic basketball and has been forever.

Of course you don't have to have 5 guys crashing the boards. My point was that even if they did, they still wouldn't be a good rebounding team. So how good are 1 or 2 going to be? Might as well just get back is Stalling's philosophy, and though we don't like it maybe it's for the best.

Mrs Buffett and I were only able to watch the last 5 mins of the game and we were impressed!

The team has potential!
Add a few players, certainly a center, and we could have a team will compete!

Was it for the best in the Griz game after Ryan shot that brick?
The shot was not exactly a brick - I thought it was going in

It was a good shot with the game on the line - It was not short armed like Cam Wright had a wont to do and it wasn't badly missed like Cam Johnson had a wont to do

If everyone had to work to get that open of a shot, maybe no one was going to be in position for a rebound.
