...JD has not found or entrusted anyone other than JRob to possess the basketball on the fastbreak, to guide the offense, breakdown the defense off the dribble, get to the rim, etc from the 2 Guard.
The 2 Guard is supposed to be a offensive minded player that can score in a multitude of ways, especially off of the dribble. JD continues to insist that JRob always be in control. JD has got to allow someone other than JRob the minutes to F-up, turn the ball over, etc. in order to gain some confidence, work out his issues, gain his teammates confidence & play style.
It's like as soon as someone struggles he turns back to JRob. I know JRob played a nice game last night but he is predictable in many of the things he does & he provides none of that explosive dribble drive that can create shots when others are not hitting their jumpers.
Artis has the game to do some of that but he is still not a guard that carries guard quickness. That also needs to be part of a team that wants to compete at the level we are gonna play.
If someone does not make 3 pointers we get no contribution from the 2 guard slot. And the bad thing is ,the 2 Guard is supposed to be where you go (as on most teams) for the most reliable scorer.
We had no plays set for Cameron to receive the ball & shoot other than what came out of the offense. I know running the offense is what coach ultimately wants to do but there are times when things are struggling that a coach needs to change the tempo, momentum by shaking things up. Purdue set that Frosh up for 3 corner jumpers right off of the pass.
Milligan is on a very short leash as well as Sterling is on a short leash. They are both guards capable of handling the basketball, allow them to do just that. At this point I want some Turnovers to show people are trying to create, challenge the defense, putting pressure on the D to defend.
Protecting the basketball by never going outside of your comfort zone never allows for any growth in one's game.
Artis needs to be more selfish w/ taking the ball off the dribble. And Jamie needs to set up some 2 or 3 man offensive sets where they isolate. We need some high pick & roll type plays that Lavance played w/ Sam Young & DeJuan Blair. Either allow the newer players to develop onto this team or take our established players & run everything thru them.
The sad part is we are once again a very unselfish team, our 2 best players are the most imaginative passers we have. In todays game I find it hard to believe Jamie cannot find a guard that can play best at the dribble drive game. The last thing we need is a 3 point shooter. We need a explosive athlete that can get to the rim, breakdown an opponent. I'll take the turnovers. Imagine how good we could be w/ someone breaking down the defense off the dribble only to dump it off to Mike or Artis w/ their passing skills. The defense would never be able to catch up. The kickouts to open 3 point shooters would be much easier to make.
JD has got to settle on a 2 guard & let whoever that is develop into doing what a starting 2 guard should do.
H2 PITT !!!
