Press release:

The Pitt Basketball program will provide fans an early chance to see the 2021-22 Panthers in action with an open scrimmage Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Petersen Events Center. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and open to the public free of charge.

“We are excited to have fans back in the Petersen Events Center and for Panther Nation to get to see this new group of players,” said head coach Jeff Capel. “Our team has worked hard and we have seen steady development and progress throughout the offseason. I really like how our group of newcomers has blended in with our core group of returnees. We have a versatile and athletic team with the opportunity to play an exciting brand of basketball.”

Seating for the open scrimmage will be general admission with court level seating reserved for students and members of the Oakland Zoo. The general public will have the opportunity to sit in the 100-level, including the new padded seats in sections 107-109 and 120-122. The upper level of the Petersen Events Center will be closed off for the scrimmage.

Concession stands, including the Hardwood Café (concourse level) and Coaches Corner (above sections 107-109) will be open for the scrimmage.

Due to construction, access from the lower lobby of the Petersen Events Center will be restricted. Students will use the lobby and Oakland Zoo entrance to access their seats, while the general public is asked to enter at Concourse A.

Parking will be available free of charge in the OC Lot off Allequippa Street. Doors to the Petersen Events Center will open at 1 p.m.

Student Panther Club members will be able to pick up their Oakland Zoo t-shirt for the 2021-22 season with their valid membership card at the Oakland Zoo entrance. Oakland Zoo t-shirts will also be available to purchase at the merchandise kiosk near the Concourse A entrance to the Petersen Events Center.

University of Pittsburgh health guidelines currently require all persons to wear face coverings when University buildings, regardless of vaccination status. Accordingly, attending fans will be required to wear face coverings inside the Petersen Events Center. The open scrimmage on Oct. 9 will also feature appearances by the Pitt Band and Spirit Squads, pregame music, and in-game giveaways and contests.

The backcourt trio of Ithiel Horton (8.9 ppg., 43 3FG), Nike Sibande (6.9 ppg., .436 3FG Pct.) and Femi Odukale (6.6 ppg., 2.5 rpg., 2.2 apg.) lead a group of nine returning letterwinners for the Panthers. Joining Odukale from a talented freshman class a year ago are John Hugley (5.1 ppg., 4.3 rpg.), William Jeffress, Noah Collier and Max Amadasun.

Pitt bolstered the size, experience and depth of the program with the offseason additions of Jamarius Burton, Mouhamadou Gueye and Dan Oladapo.

Burton (Wichita State/Texas Tech) is averaging 7.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game over 90 career contests (56 starts). Gueye (Stony Brook) averaged 9.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game and was named America East Defensive Player of the Year, while Oladapo (Oakland) posted 12.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game, while shooting 56.9 percent from the field last season.

JUCO transfer Chris Payton and prep school standout Nate Santos are also poised to compete for playing time early on for the Panthers.
