Honestly, I think I agree with Vegas. I think Syracuse is a really good bet to disappoint this year.
I read Athlon’s season preview yesterday and they have the Orange going to the Orange Bowl. When I read that, that seemed extraordinarily ambitious to me.
I like Dino Babers and think he is doing a wonderful job in Central New York. Also, I could easily see Syracuse surpassing that five win total.
However, the notion that they are favored for a major bowl game, I just don’t see that… at all!
I understand that no two programs ever start at the exact same point, so this may be an imperfect comparison. Also, for the most part, Syracuse competes in a tougher division than Pitt. However,
I can tell you that under Babers, the Orange are 18-19, 10-14 in the ACC. They are 4-11 on the road under Babers.
Conversely, Pitt, in that same time period - and for which they have been mostly raked over the coals - is 20-19, 14-10 in the ACC. The Panthers are 5–11 on the road under Narduzzi over the past three years and Pitt is 2-1 against Syracuse head-to-head in that span.
All of that seems like it suggests that they are very comparable programs right now – at least to me that’s what the numbers suggest. Now, that obviously could change starting this year. However, it could also change in Pitt‘s favor starting this year.
