I didn’t see as many of the nominees as I normally do but what are thoughts?

The only one I want to root hard for to win is “Flow” for best animated feature. Just a sweet sweet film.

Best Picture. I saw Dune II, Conclave, A Complete Unknown and slogged through Emilia Perez on Netflix. Conclave was best of what I saw.

Best Actor seems to be a battle between Brody and Chalamet. Maybe Ralph sneaks in.

Actress seems to be leaning towards Demi but the Anora stans keep hoping for Mikey Madison.

Supporting seems to be a lock for Culkin and Zoe.

A fairly weak year in my opinion.

Man I remember when Demi couldn’t act. That was 40 years ago of course.

Good for her.

Of the best picture nominees I have only see dune. Loved it.

Watched gladiator 2 last week and thought it was really boring and not good at all.

Nosfaratu was good but not great.

Longlegs was mid.

I dont remember seeing anything last year that grabbed my attention as really well done.

Gladiator 2 was a fine watch for me. Nothing spectacular. It did little with character development. Would have liked to see more from those weird twins to make them stronger antagonists, and the lead character needed additional development. But what was up with those monkey dogs, and even worse turning the Roman coliseum into a shark tank? That was cringe.

Sharks was literally jumping the shark. The movie didn't know if it wanted to be an action movie or a political one. The political plot felt way too rushed and way too much standing around for it to be an action movie.

Have not really paid attention for the last 40 years or so..

Every since great films like Used Cars, Idiocracy and The Waterboy have been past over I have paid no attention to this scam of a selection process....

USED CARS! I had not seen that until Covid. Love that movie. I don't know how that one escaped me all these years. Also planning to watch Tin Men soon, which will also be a first for me.

I've been going through a phase recently of watching 80s movies. Last night's late night entertainment was 'Throw Momma From the Train'.

Ever since they increased the number of nominees from five, I have stopped trying to see them all. This year, I haven’t seen any of the nominees.

When I lived in Santa Monica, one of the women who lived in Unit 1 of the 4-unit building was a member of the Academy and her wife was a member of SAG. So they got DVDs of every nominee in categories for which they were allowed to vote (and everyone can vote for Best Picture). They were not supposed to share the DVDs with anyone, but always did. I would guess that I saw at least 4 of the 5 nominees for more than 20 years.

Since I moved to Barcelona, that source is gone and we haven’t gone to a movie here, although we do attend plays, the very occasional opera, and concerts. So unless it’s streaming, we don’t see anything. The last three years, the movie I enjoyed the most either lost or wasn’t nominated. When it was nominated, I tried to watch The Squid Game and got through 40 minutes of it.

The only movie this year that caught my attention was Conclave and it was shown with Spanish subtitles. At my age, even if the movie is in English if it doesn’t have English subtitles I can’t follow it most of the time.

Returning ftom Thailand/Singapore yesterday, I watched North By Northwest for probably the 4th time. Masha has never seen it, so we are going to watch the DVD tonight. She generally won’t watch old movies, but after she initially didn’t want to watch Casablanca she loved it. So now she is willing to try what I think was Hitchcock’s best film. I doubt any nominated film this year is marginally close to it for quality.

She was fantastic in Blame it on Rio! She should have won two major awards for that performance.

Not sure. I was sort of hypnotized into thinking she was great though.
Come to think of it, Rob lowe couldn’t act either. But he was dreamy too and had me mesmerized. Wait did I say that out loud? Who cares, the lair is going away.

I haven't seen them all, but of the nominees in any category, Flow is the best movie I've seen from 2024. I took my kids to see it (they're 10 and 7), and I was a little nervous going in, wondering how they'd respond to a wordless Latvian movie created with open source animation software, but they both loved it. It's hypnotizing. My wife loved it too. It's nominated for both Animated Feature and International Feature, I believe?

I'm one of the Anora stans. Come on, Mikey!

The Substance, man, I think the filmmakers hit their mark for what they wanted to achieve, and Demi provides everything they needed from her. But, man, I'm certain that I've never spent so much of a movie unable to watch what was onscreen. The ending just went off the rails for me.
