OT: Ambridge Pizza

What is the pizza they pile on cold cheese after it is cooked? I saw a tv segment on them and it looked good but can't remember the name.
Beto’s Pizza on Banksville Road just through the Fort Pitt Tunnels. People typically have very strong reactions to it – they either love it or they hate it. I personally love it. I think it is unique and very tasty. However, my wife detests it.

I love pizza! I don’t have many passions, but pizza is one of them. I go all around the area looking for good pizza. Another very underrated pizza place is Danny’s on 88 in Bethel Park. That’s worth the drive too. They also have really good hoagies there.

I spent a few days in Naples recently - the real one, not Florida - and if you love pizza, that is where you will find the best.

Beto's - Banksville Road

Ok I am going total food nerd here. You are correct he is referring to Beto's but the style of Pizza is referred to as Ohio Valley style and it is common in the Stuebenville OH/Wheeling WV area. The originator and imo of the best is Dicarlo's they have a few shops in the area I mentioned. They used to be on RT 51 but that location I believe has closed. Basically you either love it or hate it.

You are correct on all accounts.

Haven’t lived in PGH for a number of years but when I get back Aiello’s Pizza is always on my list.

Beto’s on Banksville.

The Buffalo chicken pizza at Frank’s Pizza & Chicken is pretty awesome. Homemade ranch dressing is aces. Their steak onion ranch pizza is pretty bomb also.

For your basic every day pizza, I prefer Pizza Italia in Bloomfield on Liberty Ave.

By the way, does Jay Paterno work at the Sir Pizza in Cranberry??
Apparently no one does...always looks empty. The one in Franklin Park does a bit of business, but that's in NA turf.....they think Chef Boyardee is Italian food. The metallic taste is familiar, I guess.

You obviously don’t get dragged to hipster pizza joints and their “fresh ingredient” pizza’s and also serve salads.

Ok I need to know what the hell you are talking about? I need to avoid those places.

You've never put uneaten pizza in the fridge? Why would it be wasted?
Cold Italian food, one day old, is the best food on the planet!
Cold Lasagna, Ziti and meat balls, even Pizza from the frig one day later is the best!

That's how I got thru college at CSU way back when. Waitressed in a pizza joint and got the unsold stuff!

1. Vincents
2. Mineo’s
3. Beto’s

Pepperoni and Sausage are the toppings.

-My go to spots in Pittsburgh are your Top 2 plus Della Sala's in Verona. They have been my go to spots in Pittsburgh for over 20 years. Interestingly, I never tried or even heard of Beto's. Surprised the vincents out in Murrysville closed.

-Man, just thinking about this makes me hungry. I swear Pittsburgh has the best food in the country and the entire world, not even NY can touch it. I was in steel town over the summer. Had all 3, of course Wholey's down the strip, Rudy's sub out in Monroeville, Primanti's, Potato Patch at Kennywood, etc... My only disappointment was Chin's closed, the biggest egg rolls the size of softballs on the planet and they were awesome.

This thread is vintage Inside the Huddle. All we need is BurghGuy posting girly pics and Stu lecturing all of you on how you should eschew pizza for vegan fare.

we used to laugh at stu, but he's actually right

i'm betting these experts on all the pizza joints from beaver county to elizabeth aren't exactly svelte in the waistline

This thread seems burbs centric.
How about some city-east end recommendations?

Been disappointed there doesn’t seem to be a good pizza and wings place , except Spak Brothers

Speaking of the east.. my neck of the woods.
Off of the parkway in Forest Hills..
Drews.. has the recipe for Vincent's pizza, very good pancakes and home fries..
Roman Bistro, great beers and quality food, a bit pricey.
Jodi B's.. decent sandwiches..
Vincent's pizza.. nuff said.
Rene's, great fish..
Drew Mena's, chicken parm.. owner is Big PITT fan..
Wooden Nickle, chicken Parma or anything on the menu..
Luciano's, one of the brother's place .. good Italian fare.
To name a few out east..

Should I do Franks or the Pizza House?? I heard Cal everytime he comes back to town orders some to take back to Kentucky, but not sure which one he does.

Any of you folks from the area give me the rundown and choice of which one to try??

Thanks in advanced.

I've had both, although it's been a while for police station pizza. Police Station pizza is good if you order it correctly and like pan style square pizza. The crust is thick and crispy and the toppings seem good quality. Sauce is decent, although they could go a little heavier on it. Make sure to order with extra cheese.

Frank's pizza just isn't for me. My wife is from the area and talked it up, said it's great. I was skeptical, since it's a little unusual in style, but gave it a shot. I couldn't take more than a few bites. There was not one thing I liked about it. The cheese and toppings are probably good quality, but cold cheese just isn't for me. It felt more like those Lunchable pizzas than restaurant. The pepperoni had a weird flavor and was thick cut. Maybe I'm used to crappy pepperoni or something, but I really didn't care for it. The sauce was probably the best part, but I still didn't like it. You can tell they put effort into their pizza. Some places around town could switch names and you wouldn't know the difference. Frank's is unique. Some people love them, but Frank's is not for me.

Here's a new one, Rockaway Pizza in White Oak, on Lincoln Way, on the left as you head down to route 48. New York style pizza. See menu on facebook. Only problem is it's almost entirely takeout. One size, 18 inch pie. But the owner gives a shit about every pie that leaves the shop. If you're in the area, its well worth a stop. Extremely reasonable too! Plain 18 inch pie is $13. Meats from a local shop, Lampert's Market. Try it you won't be disappointed. And no, I have nothing to do with the place.
