We buy our cars and keep for 10-15 years, if not longer. Bought a Cadillac SRX 3 years ago and have disliked it from minute one. It is too small for our needs and even though it is AWD, it is not good in the snow. Have been looking at the the new Volvo XC90 for a couple of months and may finally pull the trigger this week. Obviously a huge investment so I'm nervous as up till now all the cars we have owned have been extremely dependable with low maintenance/service issues. I know nothing about Volvo except their reputation for safety. Anyone here who has owned one?

Pitt girl, a buddy of mine did lease a Volvo SUV, he really liked with the exception of going through tires and the cost of replacing. One thing I remember him saying his wife had the feeling of security always..

absolutely! I have owned 2 XC90's. currently own a 2004 that was in bad shape when I first got it and I haven't put much money into it and it still runs. the reason why I'm in this one is because I totaled the first one and I walked right out of two accidents! the first accident I was blindsided on my driver side and I walked the second one I was on all ice and hit a pole head-on and I walked out of that. Now I believe it was God's grace but I have to say the Volvos are very safe because the first person who hit me was also driving a Volvo with a pregnant wife and they weren't hurt either. I would love to buy a new Volvo if I can afford it. I definitely recommend purchasing one if you can afford it. even if you bought one a few years old they're really nice! Hope this helps
I meant to say that they can be pricey to maintain but you can find anything you want online. Hope that helps

I have a friend that has nothing but problems with his 2016 XC90. So many problems in fact, they are in litigation currently to Lemon-Law it. He posted it on Facebook and three other people I don't know said the same thing. A friend owns a used car dealership and [told me] the older XC90s are notorious for bad trannys (not the Bruce Jenner type). I had an '09 S80 Sedan new until 95,000 miles (I drive a lot for work) and loved it except it never stayed in alignment so I went through tires relentlessly. Nothing else went wrong with it while I had it...good luck with your selection.

We used to have one and I will tell you our scheduled maintenance bills were through the roof. It seemed like every time I took it in the bill was over $1,000 for nothing out if the ordinary. Other than that, we really liked it. But...we then went Lexus and haven't looked back since.

I'll echo the high maintenance cost comment... Neighbors liked theirs in terms of style, safety, and ride, but got rid of it because the general maintenance just wasn't practical.

Yep, I went through that and still have my Caddys but as Antiques. Seldom use them and all required 2 to 3 engines and replaced everything plus having the frames re-welded.

Dump it ASAP! Buick's so much better and cheaper and more reliable!

Have been looking at the the new Volvo XC90 for a couple of months and may finally pull the trigger this week.
I went part of that way in 1990s, but I rented a Volvo for 2 weeks and drove it on trips and in and around home. Did not like it and did not buy it. I do this now with all Cars before I buy them. Cars are expensive investment and setting up a 2 week rental deal (less than $500.00 if you plan it right), to know you will like it and do it with one that has 15,000 miles or more is advisable in my opinion. Tests drive don't cut it, 1,000 trip drives will tell you if you like it.

I also talk to many mechanic ans ask one question what cars don't you see often? Right now most told me Subaru's and Tahoes! I am renting them now and like both. Will buy one later! Chrysler have Transmissions problems they told me.

Obviously a huge investment so I'm nervous as up till now all the cars we have owned have been extremely dependable with low maintenance/service issues. I know nothing about Volvo except their reputation for safety. Anyone here who has owned one?
If it is safety you want you won't be disappointed but over time when repairs needed and Warranty gone you may not be as happy. Mechanics told me stay away parts alone big price items.

However, I have changed my ways too. No Longer keep my old cars except for the few Caddys still in garages with covers and battery chargers, but they will be sold soon too.

I now buy Two Year Cars with 20,000 miles or less and covered with Warranties up to 100,000 and sell them right in 90,000 range and buy another 2 Year Old, but I still rent them for two weeks (Rent the Model you may want two years before) before I buy them and talk to mechanics to make sure I like them and they approve them. Triple AA has a Auto Mechanic service that checks out any used car.

This will save much time and money and no need to hold onto Cars anymore for 10-15 years. My problem is I am very loyal to my Cats, Cars, Friends, and CFB Football in that order! They say the Two Year Old Lexus is the best value now. Won't buy new or lease anymore either. Once Warranty is up get a new one and it tough to find a 2 year old Subaru but not impossible!

Last I checked there has been some problems with Subaru's certain models like 2014 but the Tahoes is great because it allows you to go from 2 Wheel Drive to 4, and that a big difference in mileage. Tahoes are Caddy Escalades without the need of all the Bells & Whistles and buy the under cover, but big enough for any needs.

But pretty sure the next one is a Subaru!

I lease a 60 sedan. It runs like a great set of tits. However I have a couple friends who own volvos and complain about the high cost of ownership.

These cars are built well for safety. The front seats are excellent for support and comfort.

Wow - thanks everyone! Yes, the when the 2016's were rolled out they had a lot of software issues but it is does seem to have been resolved in the last 18 months for the 2017 model. It comes with a full 4 year, 50K warranty and 3 year, 30K "wear and tear" coverage from Rahal. Covers oil changes, wiper blades, brake pads, etc. Even though it isn't always advisable, we will buy another 4 years or 100K additional warranty. It is relatively inexpensive and after scrutiny does cover more than other extended warranties we have bought. I always perceived Volvo's as being very stodgy, but I have to say this new XC90 is sharp. I just get very nervous when we buy these expensive cars. Did the same when we bought an Escalade in 2001. But I absolutely loved that car and kept it 12 years/140K miles. Hated trading it in especially since I really don't like its replacement (SRX). I develop relationships with my cars. ;)

Have you looked into the range rover or land rovers? If you're willing to spend the money, that's probably the #1 suv in my mind.

Yes - for a minute. :) $75K+ is out of the question. I would have looked more seriously at the Audi equivalent, but having every other conceivable car dealership less than 10 minutes from our house, I didn't see the logic of spending more and having to travel 25 minutes back/forth for any service.

I will never buy one because of the stupid commercial they are currently running on tv. I don't get it.

Good vehicles. Exceptionally high regular maintenance costs even for routine XXX mileage check-ups.

Pitt girl.

The wife and I have test driven the 90xc hybrid to replace her Lexus and are probably going to make the change next month. We really like the model. Not inexpensive but if you keep it as long as you indicated it should be a good investment.

70,000/12/mo = 483

Wait for the Bentley shop to open in a few months. They have an Urban Assault Vehicle in their lineup. Might be worth the $220K just for the neighbors'-jawdrop effect.
A good friend drives the Volvo....nice rig, but the carrying space didn't seem really big to me. You might look at the new Jag piece, too, though it's probably a lot pricier. As usual, Coventry wins the eyeball test.

-Range rovers and land Rovers are garbage. My buddy in Jennerstown works on vehicles and said he'd never buy one. Always breaking down and expensive to fix. This is definitely a vehicle people buy to say "Look at me".

I drove one and loved it but was a bit stuck on the price - I bought a Subaru Outback $20k cheaper, higher safety ratings and roomy interior and cargo space.

The grandson owned both the Range Rover, wife has the S-40 Volvo and he has put more money in the Rover by far, front end.His wife has had the Volvo since 2010,with no problems. He purchased a new Jeep Cherokee last fall.

Can't be higher since Volvo and Subaru both have the highest safety grade possible.

Seriously - there is a Bentley dealership coming to the North Hills? LOL. Who's the dealer? Bobby Rahal?

Ohhhh, yes....you must go further than 910..... will adjoin the Rahal Lexus property....just south of it., west side of Rt.19. And across the street in the former Laz-E-Boy store......Tesla setting up shop.
Finally, Atria's is closed....will be a Ditka's in the fall, so the signs say. First high-end steak joint in the North Hills. If Iron Mike shows up, I may just challenge him in an epic arm-rasslin' session.
Good Lord....all we had here when we moved in was Smiley's Scuba Shop. New townhouses, apartments and McMansion plans.

I hear you NTOP. That and the Post Office Deli. I'm loving all the growth. Keeps house values rising. Now if they can get the Walmart built in the old Trader Horn property we'll be talking. Saw the Ditka's sign this weekend. Hubby and I just blinked like, "Did you see that?". Appears the same group owns Atria's and Ditka's.

Tesla has a small store in Ross Park right now. I'm seeing more and more of them on the road up here. Passed one coming up Ingomar Heights Road this AM. Sharp looking car.

You sound like a mirror image buyer to me. I typically purchase my cars outright and drive them 10-15 years. I bought a Volvo V70 wagon back around 1996 if memory serves. I bought the car primarily for my wife and 2 kids. Wanted something comfortable, with space, reliable, and safe. That's kinda what I thought Volvo was all about.

I have to say that I was underwhelmed with the overall quality. Rode smoothly and was quiet and comfortable, but little things like electrical stuff kept going bad. For instance, our ABS idiot light kept coming on. Needless to say, I took the car to the dealer because I was worried that the ABS system was not working. Dealer says (paraphrasing), yeah, we run into this problem a lot with this car. Nothing wrong with the actual ABS, but the circuit card that controls the idiot light malfunctions. Replace the board and you should have no problems. I ask the cost to replace what amounts to a very basic circuit board (probably costs $5 to manufacture in Taiwan)... $1,500! My home cooked solution....pull the blub...cost...zero dollars and about 10 minutes of time.

I had other quality issues besides the electronics. For instance, the door hinge weld cracked after about 3 years (just after the warranty expired of course). The door still opened but made a horrible sound. I've owned dozens of cars and never seen anything like this. Just bad QA.

The only good news was that a new driver smashed the front end in and totaled the car about year 5. The airbags did work and no one got hurt, so it definitely passed the safety test. The insurance settlement was pretty good because the book value was high.

I switched over to Honda CRV's in 2006. No comparison in terms of quality. Of course, the Honda isn't as "prestigious" as a Volvo, but I'll take quality and reliability all day long.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck whatever you decide.

I have a friend that is really into the nuts and bolts of cars. Always has a new Tahoe every two years and always has an interesting second car for fun. He bought that model a few months ago and my first impression was WOW. It's visually stunning on the outside but even better inside. He always test drives a ton of cars and wasn't planning on that Volvo but once he drove it, he said the decision was easy. He said it was a very close choice between that and the Audi Q7 but they couldn't get the Audi shipped for 4 months. He got 20 inch tires and says he loves it. To go from Tahoe for life to Volvo caught my attention.

LOL...I sell those McMansions in Pine Twp. Love the development in the area...keep it coming! Keeps me employed and makes selling these big'ol new constructions easier...
