2018 had an extremely hot stretch of something like 9-10 days over 2 weeks at or above 90 in August. I remember because I was building a a fireplace with my father during it.

Welcome to my world. It has been like that all the time since we moved to Kansas City. Had never experienced such dry, hot heat before... talk about a shock to the system! Nowadays when we come back for visits, the weather is one of the things I look forward to the most. :D

I remember taking a class in Omaha one summer (similar to KC)

I never felt heat like I felt in Nebraska.

Does anyone remember the summer of ‘88? Over 100 6 or 7 times and over 90 36 times. And that was in south central Pa. The grass was like pine needles. You couldn’t walk on it in your bare feet.

Yes. I graduated college that year. I can remember it was so dry, in fact in November my house almost burned down as ashes from a fire place ignited leaves which ignited a log pile, which ignited a line of pine trees leading to our house. The fire department got there just in time.

And it just keeps on getting more and more like 1988. I was going to put in a new lawn this year. I am so glad I didn't.

Maybe the global warming topic will start to supersede the COVID discussions in the media.

Highs in the low 90s and low humidity? Must be nice. I’ll pack a sweater.

In parts of central PA, we haven’t had any appreciable rain in weeks. Glad I got to the raspberry patch before my neighbors.

My grass and garden can use a nice storm. looks like the sprinkler will be working overtime. The part that sucks is the raspberries and blueberries are next to my house and I always hand water them since a sprinkler will waste water soaking the house.

I still vividly remember the summer of 1988. My soon-to-be husband had an apartment on the Bluff of Mt. Washington. It barely rained the entire summer and the Point turned totally brown.

Other than that I can't remember another stretch like this. Lucky we pulled the trigger and replaced out entire HVAC in May. Our old a/c was awful. This new system has no issue keeping our upstairs cool and temps constant. I will be very curious when we get our Penn Power bill.....

Virus, sand storms from the Sahara, locusts from South America, murder hornets - it does kind of feel biblical.

One positive - this will be a GREAT summer for tomatoes.

I got lots of tomatoes, including San Marzano which I hope to can. Yeah I graduated college in 1988......just remember how dry and hot it was. April and May were wet and cold, but June has been really hot and dry and July is setting up really to be the same.

I am so glad I didn't put in a new lawn this year. I was going to.

On a related note, going back to my youth, this is what I remembered this time of year being, we always vacationed in Ocean City around now, and I always was at a pool, so if you are a kid, this is great.

Except....being a kid when I was a kid has to be so much better than now, COVID excluded. You could just go hang out then....with out worries.

We've had to reseed multiple times, the fall is always the best time.

Since we bought an older house/property, we also cycle through cutting down trees and replanting. Slightly concerned about anything planted less than 3 years ago. I may start to give them all a drink this week - trickle of water for at least 20 minutes. I'll kill myself if any of these trees/shrubs start dying off. So much $$, work and maintenance. It will take many feet of hoses and at least 2 days to get to all of them.

And fwiw - we live on a private lane which has a path to a small community pool. Kids up and down on their bikes all day. Going by what I see not sure they are all that worried. ;)

Also not just tomatoes...but man......I got Banana Peppers that are popping and already hot as hell. Jalopenos. Serranos. But can't wait most of all for Cayenne and Tabasco peppers I planted which should yield for some fantastic hot sauce!

Read a FB message from my organic vegetable CSA farm. They said cucumbers are monstrous. Posted a picture. Yikes. Lots of pickles in our future.

But they said certain things like ginger were destroyed.

I attended Pitt’s basketball camp that summer. Fitzgerald Fieldhouse was an oven and we played all day and night. There were courts in the upper levels and it had to have been 115 up there.

I had a convertible then, only dropped the top at night. Got married 10/01. Drove to the ceremony with the top down, wearing my tux. 88 degrees. 1991 was pretty hot, too.

LOL.
We built out house in 1988.
We did put in our lawn that spring. Was coming in great. Lots of work raking stones, leveling, planting, mulching....then the heat wave hit!
Like 20 days over 90 with a few over 100 and NO rain.
Remember standing on the front porch at night and watching heat lightning, praying for a shower that never came!

The grass that had been so nice turned brown and brittle! We watered a lot, but didn't realize the water rates out here were way more than in Penn Hills! After a $300 water bill (in 1988 dollars) we stopped that.

Funny though, the grass survived. When it broke and finally rained like normal, it came back just fine.

We laugh about it often, like farming in the Sahara!

I remember that. This was a couple years after the string of tornadoes hit Westrn PA. We were in the Allegheny National Forest and all we saw were signs warning about "Extreme Fire Danger" and the danger of cutting blown down timber.

The pic is either Marienville or Kelletville. It looked like a lawn mower was pushed thru the forest.

The tornado outbreak is was in 85. I was in Potter county that day and just missed a couple of those tornadoes. The storm that came thru was a real dandy.

Until now. You are right, they have been great. I think that changes this week. When I look at temps in the summer, many times I look at the lows first. Because that is when I know there will be an increase in mugginess.
FWIW - I literally had an incident at the gym this morning and got totally dehydrated even though I use a product called Liquid IV that helps hydrate more quickly than water alone. Multiple muscle groups started cramping at once. This has never happened to me before. The weather this week is MUCH worse than last - may be the same temps but way more humidity.

Be careful everyone!!!

Had the same thing happen on the golf course Saturday. Was plenty hydrated, but the heat got the best of me....scary stuff....
