What do you think will result. I'm still in the boat where the Big XII will decide not to expand and the networks will buy out the pro rata clause via higher rights fees and they'll call it a day.

I agree, it seems like they've lost the will to expand once they looked at the candidates and the financials.

Expansion candidates would have been leaked by now so they will announce no expansion, that they are so happy at 10 and a CCG at Jerry World starts up again next year.

Agree, the available candidates are just not enough in the current landscape of things.

I think they will announced that they are tabling expansion. I think if they announced that it is fully dead the public backlash would be too harsh.

They will say that they are going to continue with 10 teams for the foreseeable future while they monitor the landscape. They will also announce new terms to their television contract.

I also think that is a mistake.

I think for most expansion is about stability as much as it's about money. The Big 12 needs to stabilize the conference and I don't believe they can be fully stable in their current configuration.

I genuinely believe they should expand by four teams. I think that would be their best long-term move. If it were me I would choose BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Connecticut. However, Houston may also have to be in there for political purposes. They would replace the Huskies.

At the very least, the B12 kshould expand by two teams now and maybe two more teams down the road.

As things stand now, it looks to me like Oklahoma and Texas are going to play out the string and when this grant of rights expires or becomes low enough that the damages are not too severe, they are going to bolt for greener pastures.

That is why I think that league should "promote" some teams now and build up their brand so that when Oklahoma and Texas do leave, and they are going to leave, the league is not perceived as dipping into the minor-league to replace them.

I really think that's a bad strategy.

To bolster my point, had the Big 12 followed its current mindset the last time around, West Virginia and TCU would still be in the AAC and would not be seen as power five programs.

Well, TCU has been one of the best programs in the conference and West Virginia might be their only realistic hope for a playoff berth this year.

You're telling me that school like BYU or Cincinnati could not do the same a few years from now? I'm sorry but that's just completely ridiculous.

Houston beat the hell out of Oklahoma on a neutral field this year.

It's just complete nonsense. BYU, for example, is CLEARLY a power five program that just happens to be unaffiliated with a major conference.

as an aside.....SI was discussing the Big 12.....and how the league isnt very good this year.

The interesting comment to me....was the best OOC win for the Big 12 was originally thought to be Texas beating ND.

But remove that as a valid option (which it doesnt appear to be)....and the best win for the entire leagueis OSU beating Pitt in the last 1:30 seconds......

I thought they were going with no one but I saw Stewart mandel tweet from BYU and they have scheduled a press conference for later today.

BYUtv is covering the Big XII press conference. BYU has no press conference scheduled.

Out of the box: Colorado State. Adjoining 6M population state with a new stadium coming on line. Great school, great area, great smoking. Bigger and better than a lot of the schools in the conference. If you get money by having conference TV channel in states where the schools are, CO is bigger than Utah or Conn. Bigger than Ok, KS, and Iowa for that matter. By the same logic that Pitt doesn't add TV to the big ten, Houston does not add TV to the Big 12. I'd also get Cincy for WVU travel partner and Ohio TVs. Seems like a no brainer to me but I've been accused of no brain.

They are announcing a new Pope hat for Bevo and a Cardinal style robe for Oklahoma.

The Big 12 should add BYU. That seems like a no brainer. I don't want them adding Cincy or Uconn, simply because that makes WVU travel a bit easier.

Why? Cincinnati WAS SUPERIOR to Pitt in the last decade of the BE.

Absolutely agree with your post. I feel the same thing, and I can see the same end game.

each school is going to get additional money by not expanding.

Really smart play by the Big 12. ESPN and FOX were on the hook to pay an additional $40 million more if they added 2 schools. The Big 12 said "its in the contract, we're adding 2 also-rans, so pay up." ESPN was caught so instead of coughing up $40 million per year to get Cincy and Houston inventory which they already own through their deal with the American, they'll probably pay an additional $20 million more per year if they DONT expand AND add a CCG.

b12 doesn't have conference network so adding new area only makes them money if that area will watch b12 games draws ratings. Ratings is the thing the b12 lacks only TX and OK draw good tv ratings. Everyone else is a also ran nationally. Its why their tv ratings are 4th out of the power 5 conferences ahead of only the PAC which has the whole everyone is sleeping on the east coast when they play problem! Take out TX and OK and everyone else can't draw anywhere near anyone in the ACC except for teams like wake forest.

They should add Marshall Seriously, Oklahoma and Texas want the flexibility to bolt and better themselves in the future. I think the two presidents of those schools control everything that is going.

Keep dem tractors Rollin and the kin ridin on da hey.

So does this final put to bed all of the rumors about how the Big 12 is going to raid the ACC and turn Pitt into an FCS school?

Those rumors were put to bed in July, which is what led the Big 12 to this place. They're going to make more money than they should for the next ten years. But after that, it's a toss up. Which is why the BIG and the SEC will be having a lot of conversations with Kansas and OU and UT during that time.

UT has the Longhorn network, the money, and the clout. I don't think they want to give that up, which is what would happen if they bolted.

OU on the other hand, has some clout in the Big 12, but not like Texas. So the question becomes how long is OU going to be content in the Big 12. I think ultimately, OU is the school that determines the fate of the Big 12. I think Texas is perfectly content with status quo.

Kansas is screwed. The Big Ten wont take them.

OU can choose between B10, P12, ACC, and SEC.

Texas won't do P12 or SEC so will choose between ACC and B10.

Revamp what do you have if you take out Fsu and Clemson out of the ACC??

A lot more than the b12. Miami, NC, Pitt and va tech all draw far superior tv ratings compared to the rest of the b12. Thats why the ACC is a clear number 3 in tv ratings far ahead of the b12. They are cold hard numbers look them up. SEC is 1 b10 is 2 ACC is a bit behind those two at 3 but the difference between the ACC and b10 is less than the ACC and b12. In BB the ACC is 1.

thats how I see it as well. TX makes just as much as anyone in the SEC or B10. They run the conference there is no reason for them to leave unless someone else goes first. OU is the team to watch, they don't get the money that TX does from their tier 3 deal. How long is OU content making 10 to 12 million less than TX and how long are they content to be behind the SEC and b10 programs when they can likely join either conference when the GOR expires/or nears its end.

Yeah, they're getting more money for nothing by not expanding. But the early reports so far aren't as high as first thought for that part of it.

The SportsBusinessJournal reported that ESPN paid $10M TOTAL to remove the prorata clause, and reports are that the CCG will fetch $240M over the last 8 years of the contract.
