serious question. You have a significant amount of money to invest in either Nike or Adidas today. Where would you invest it?

Additionally, you already have shares of Nike. You staying put or selling?

Not interested in hearing politics in this thread, in as much as interested in what people think about those two companies today as an investment.

why start this conversation? Can't we let this kind of stuff go during Penn State week...

Not interested in hearing politics in this thread...then don't start a thread you know for damn sure will turn to politics...

Neither - invest in something else. Selling Nike.

There’s more to life than football. When football consumes you, you end up like PSU. No thanks.

Oh and if you don’t like it, then don’t participate in it. Pretty simply.

Before you invest, you have to ask yourself one question; "what stage of my life am I currently existing"

If you are living in your late 50's early 60's, you want to invest in something safe and steady.

You'd want to stay away from Nike. The stock is tanking, but it will come back down the road. How far down the road is the question.

From a pure business POV, If you are young, Nike might be a good investment.

I wasnt really a Nike fan before (think you pay for their branding, endorsements, etc while their product lacks quality). Far better running shoes out there than Nike (huge fan of Hoka One Ones). Under Armor makes better training gear (plus being more local with HQs in Baltimore).

I personally dont like any company making political statements and tend to avoid the ones that due since that means they are focusing on elements that dont make their product better or offer me better services...and this goes for whether I agree with a company on their political standing or not.

Thinking outside of the customer side of things and as a shareholder, not a fan of own retailer/brand based stocks like Nike or Adidas. Far better buys out there.

My answer is neither...as people dont need nike/Adidas as they need food water and oil. That is where I would put my money.

But given the question.....both solid companies....one somewhat controversial.....i would hedge and buy both

Not the answer the OP is looking for but an investment question demands an investment answer.

Nike is last century stuff.

Adidas broke the mold w the unis they made for Miami’s opener.
Made from ocean debris; fish nets , bottles and hopefully straws from Starbucks.....

You can swim in them and come out dry, which apparently the Canes spent too much time on the beach last week...

And believe it or not the colors were

Orange....of the orange.
Green......of the leaf.
White......of the petal..

In other words the schools actual damn colors.

So Gooooooooo
Adidas.

I’m an older white guy so I wear the New Balance dad shoes.

If you’re looking to start a “did you see what Noke did?!” thread, I don’t have a problem with it.
I’m actually not looking to do that. I think when you look at things through your wallet, it actually takes politics out of it. Some will politicize, but looking at it objectively... Adidas had been making some strides, albeit baby steps, at Nikes market share. This may open the door a bit for them and/or Under Armour.

I love Nike running shoes... about Kap, who cares really, it is just marketing. I doubt it will move the needle much. I really doubt it will move the needle up though, and doubt it will move the needle on Adidas enough that it would be a wow kinda investment

My short answer is buy Brooks but they are owned by Berkshire Hathaway (Warren Buffet’s company).

BRK A, trades at $317,250 per share or the more thrifty shares for the average person is BRK A which trades at $210.05 per share and was up about1% today while all the shoe stocks were down.

You will sleep well at night.

UA, Reebok, or Adidas would be well served to be the first to come out with a patriotic themed campaign. Whether they say it is a counter to Nike/Kapernick, there would be no negatives to the campaign and likely would be able to create some additional market share that simply. Whole Kapernick issue is one of those the splits the country and a company would be smart to take up the patriotic side to steal market share from Nike.

Really? Every pair of Nike running shoe I owned were garbage for trail or street running. Have had Brooks and Hokas ever since....and Hokas destroy everything.

Well, I just run 5 miles or so, not marathons, but love the flyknit line. very light weight and comfortable.

I do think persons' feet vary so greatly that each person will have their own brand that just works for them, unless you get one fitted for you.

I'll answer for BuffetChowderhead

"I'm burning all my Nike golf shirts, tossing my Nike shoes in the creek, and replacing my Nike irons with Taylor Made."

And the European golfers still suck!!!

I need a high stability shoe and heard good things about Hokas. After trying a pair out, you couldn’t pay me to run in them. I get terrible blisters if I go over 5 miles and I know two or three people in the same boat.

Nike was at an all time high before it’s slide today. So it’s probably a hold or sell if you already own it.

Interesting. I'm a heavy footed runner and they have literally helped me immensely running on concrete or hard pack. As was said earlier, probably just little difference in foot, size, arch, etc that differ between people and the shoe that make such a difference between people.

I was really bummed cause I had heard a lot of great stuff with them. It’s too late in my training to make a shoe change now but afterterwards I might revisit them.

Buy low, sell high. I don't believe in buying individual stocks but if I did, I would have bought Nike today. After the initial panic drop, it will come back up pretty quickly.

I shorted Nike today. Expect them to miss revenue and profits for Q3 and Q4, but then I will get out. Consumers have short term memories, but should last through to the end of FY18.

Everybody should own a few shares of Berkshire Hathaway Class B. Now trading at $210 per share. It’s perfect for people who can’t afford a single share of BH. I have made very strong returns over the last 4 years. Buffett just turned 88 and I hope he can go another 10.

From the Cheap Seats; neither, I'm not "Hip" enough to invest in an apparel company. Never have been.

Hope for an 8-10% slide through September and buy Nike in October.

They may tank (I doubt it) but they aren't tanking right now. They took a slight slide today, but have been a great investment this year.

Many of their parents aren’t middle aged or older men. Those would be their grandfathers or great grandfathers

I stopped buying Nike apparel because I was getting tiger woods shoved down my throat. I like woods but it just seemed that it was like a constant barrage of Geico commercials. Also for a period their clothing was ugly. How many loud, ugly golf shirts can you own.

As far as shoes I never buy Nike. I was an Asics and more recently New Balance.

Good post. Nike is too big to fail. But I do wonder how much of a slide we will see in the short term, hence my post. I think this whole thing is interesting and would be a good school project for a student. I can remember back in the day having to pick a stock at the beginning of the school year and then having to follow it for several months. I think my kids have had to do that. The natural stocks for a kids to follow are Nike, Disney, etc. as a matter of fact I think I did pick Nike. It certainly would be a great one to pick today...maybe not to invest...but to follow and learn about market trends and what affects them.
