OT: Can we ban all drug commercials?

The US and New Zealand are the only countries that allow direct to consumer drug commercials. Even back in 1996 the pharmaceutical industry spent 550 million on drug ads. Unbelievable...and ridiculous.

We hardly see them. Most prescriptions are free to the patient and funded by government contract. Little consumer choice as the formulary is somewhat limited.

I particularly love the drug ads where they are only narrated. The actors in those have to be the worst of any one that auditioned. Especially the one where the street musician gives the dude a tambourine. The tambourine guy is awesomely bad.

At least they warn about rectal bleeding and potential death.

I'm tired of seeing them and they are usually terrible. Ship them off to the trash heap like cigarette ads.
They are really stupid as well. They present their product for 25 seconds and then race through all of the really boring, but important legal stuff. To top it all off, I don't know about any of you, but when I go to see my doctor, I do not tell him what medication he should prescribe, I let him determine the medicine that I should take.

Exactly. These commercials usually say "Tell your doctor.." but as Chris Rock said... "Shouldn't your doctor tell you?"

Waiting for a political candidate to come out and support banning these stupid and unnecessary ads.

Big Pharma sponsors most of what you see on American television. They also have complete control over Congress and the White House.

In other words you are likely to see MORE pharmaceutical commercials not less

Yeah.... lobbyist, hand outs, corruption, this is the reason. It is absolutely ridiculous that is allowed in the USA.

Just had an argument with my son in med school about accepting gifts from drug companies, he said all the doctors do it, I said it is extremely unethical. I work for the US Army, we cannot even accept chocolates brought in, cant accept a free lunch, nothing. For years I thought it was crazy and overkill, but I can see that it works. Now the issue is these huge defense contractors just line the pockets of the unethical politicians to get what they want, but the tech contracts arent like this.

I’m in Tech but for a private company and we’re the same. We can’t even take a ‘free’ beer can cozy at a software demo. It’s against our company “code of ethics”. But, our (tech ignorant, and almost perversely proudly so) executives are frequently flown to exotic resort locales to be pitched on the same products by these companies, often then buying them despite our strong advice against doing so. Then we have to “make it all work”. I’ve worked multiple places too, and it’s basically the same at all of them. Corruption and double standards rule. Business life is really not that different from Dilbert…

Rules for thee, but not for me.

If you listen to these drug ads they help cure you for what ever reason you’re taking them, but they kill you in 12 other ways

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Call Alice
When she was just small
When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know
When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's off with her head
Remember what the dormouse said
Feed your head

Being a first amendment type of knucklehead and all I've never been a big "ban" fan....that being said, I never understood what good they did with the general public since the docs have been wined and dined by these companies to push these drugs already and they will sway you away from the ones you may have seen in ads in favor of their preferred meds..

At the very least, stuff that clearly doesn't work should not be allowed to push their product, or even sell it as an effective treatment. Like phenylephrine, aka Sudafed. Didn't work. They've known it doesn't work for many, many year now. Yet still kept being pushed.

Pharmaceutical commercials:
Depicts patients in a happy-ever-after like world with all health issues resolved.

Oh and P.S @ the ending: “This medication may result in depression & anxiety, headache, heart attack, sudden death, suicide, psychosis. Be sure to question your physician on these possible side effects”….WTF?!

Have you seen the ad for the website that helps you choose your doctor, where the person wants a doctor that doesn't prescribe medication and they find them one.

The ED ads have gone to a new level now as well, not only just advertising the drugs, which used to require a person to ask their own doctor to prescribe … but now the ads go around that, promising you can just click the link and their own “prescribing professional” can product the script and automatically give you these rather … potentially physically transforming (!) medications without your own doctor ever having insight into it. That sounds downright crazy and definitely shouldn’t be permissible.

Well, they do say that you should check and make sure that you're healthy enough for sex. I'll be honest, if my ticker could explode with one final "O", I gotta be honest, I'm interested.

I would like to know who names medications
i believe they are named by the witch doctor of the village in the 3rd world country where the pharmaceutical companies do all of their clinical trials.

And PBM'S have control over Big Pharma. Those companies are all much larger than any pharmaceutical company. "If you don't give us kickbacks, your drugs won't be on our formulary"
