OT: Colts calling out plays Sunday

time to let ben call his own plays.. all game. no need for this guy anymore. Let him stay on sideline and pat Ben on the backside during timeouts.. beyond tired of this clown..

Just like Bradshaw.

I'm trying to imagine what that looks like in the locker room. Go into meetings and everyone on the offense knows what went down. This isn't the first time we've heard this from the team. Remember the "Ben was drawing plays in the dirt" thing a few weeks ago?

how many crossing patterns for one yard (or a loss) did we throw and complete in the last few games..these werent even check downs or hot reads either, but actual plays..

that offense was night and day from first to second half..

Ben has been complicit with the playcalling this whole time. His arm is toast and he is afraid of getting hit. Rivers may not have had a better game statistically, but RIvers' arm is stronger and Rivers moves better, too. Ben isn't even in the discussion as an elite, or even good, QB at this point. HIs physical tools aren't there.

bens arm looked pretty good all year up until the last few games and looked even better in the second half when he threw an incredible ball to Dionte deep and to Ju Ju for that td..

Arm looked pretty good compared to what? The way he threw the ball the rest of the year? Statistically he is abysmal at getting the ball downfield. Plus, the eye test isn't friendly. Just turn on a random NFL broadcast and compare Ben's physical tools to other QBs in the league......it is painfully obvious he is at a disadvantage. He can't move, doesn't want to take hits, and can't get the ball down field.

Call me crazy but Ben’s arm doesn’t look as bad as people think. Romo on the broadcast basically was saying that there is nothing wrong with his arm but his footwork looks to be off. Perhaps that reported knee issue is the culprit.
hyperextended knee apparently. bens getting older and his arm isnt what it was, not going to deny that but this 2 seconds and under to avoid contact went over board.. you dont even try to throw it more than 5 yards you might as well pack up and call it a season..

It was good second half, it was fun to see we can still do it, it's still an option.

Perhaps, but he is obviously the only option at this point. Steelers will go as far as he can take them this year.
Pretty obvious he's injured.

Ben is a shell of his former self. No disagreement there. Nothing you said is wrong because I said the same thing Sunday afternoon. Here's the thing, the Colts probably aren't the first team to do this. Quite possible Cincy was doing the same. Their defense isn't very good but looked like world beaters Monday night. What I'm getting at is, if Ben knew the defense was on to the plays for a few weeks, he may have been hesitant to throw the ball. Also, your stats will suck if you're being asked to throw into coverage. Couple that with terrible O-line play this year and zero running game and you're asking your old QB to do a lot more than you should.

Ben’s arm strength is fine:

I’ll agree he doesn’t want to get hit and weather it is banged up or tired legs, his lower body mechanics have been bad resulting in poor throws. It’s not surprising when he started stepping into medium and long throws on Sunday he started to look good again.

Rivers moves better?
Cam heyward easily chased him down
Old man cam heyward

Not sure why Ben would ever listen to Randy, he's garbage. There's a reason the Steelers offense is always been better when they run hurry up.
I spent a good part of the last decade feeling indifferent toward Tomlin. I actually really like the guy as a person and I think he’s mostly a really good executive. But this staff of his is, mostly on offense, is garbage and ultimately that’s on him. They didn’t fill Munchaks role with anything more than a space filler, and He should have fired Coach Randy a long time ago and even 3 weeks ago. I’ve seen plenty of teams fire coordinators midseason and get better.

Tomlin's "impressive" non-losing season record streak has to be tempered by just three playoff wins since 2010 and one of those was a gimme from the Bengals. The other two came in the one great season since the last SB and that fell short because of another playoff loss to NE.

it has been a horrible decade for steelers. We've absolutely under performed dramatically in the playoffs this decade. It's Dixon(esque) to bring it back to pitt analogy.. Yes, Tomlin, who i like, absolutely laid multiple eggs this decade and missed some very good opportunities. We didnt lose to Brady, Marino, MOntana all these games, look at some of the qbs that beat us.. it's not pretty..

I think madden wrote an article earlier this week on it.

I didn't see Madden's article but even some of the "good" seasons were terrible. 2014, the Steelers go 11-5 and ended up a WC because they lost to the Jets, the Bucs, and Cleveland. The home playoff loss to Jacksonville after going 13-3 was embarrassing but how do you lose two games at home to the same team in the same season?

Remember when the Steelers had the #1 offense in the NFL and we fired our OC to only replace him with Ben's bff? I rememeber
yeah, guy liked to get busted up and get into bar fights on new years eve, so what, who hasnt done that here? I mean, i was like 19 and not 50+ but the point remains..

I don't give a piss what he was or was not doing as long as the offense looked good, which it did. He was a hell of an OC and as soon as him and Munchak left, our offense went to complete shit

ok, im not arguing. We put up video game numbers under ben, bell and AB with him calling plays, for some reason, Ben didnt like him so im assuming this guy isnt a real "people person" but you are right, as long as you are calling the right offense, who cares..

HE's still unemployed i think. he must be a real jerk to not get a job in a league that loves re-treads..

Tomlin. Loyal to a fault. Only deep sixed Joey porter because Rooney told him to and the fact he was killing the locker room

coach Randy is the Peter principle and so it goes for Tomlin because he doesn’t know how to recruit for talent. Talent wins every time wether it’s players or staff. TALENT RULES.

I posted last week that the 3 playoff wins in 10 years is going to be 3 in 15 years (at least) if the Steelers fail to do anything this year. With Ben’s age, a terrible OC, a bad OL, tons of FA losses this off season, cap issues, and Balt/Cleve/Cincy all on the rise...the chickens will come home to roost next year.

Fichtner was legitimately the most unqualified person ever to get an NFL coordinator job. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was a very successful QB coach because with Ben and under Todd Haley the passing attack was very good. It’s been obvious since day 1 this guy is just oblivious though. He makes Shawn Watson’s playbook look complex.

Rivers is a darn good QB, but he never did and never will have a stronger arm and be more mobile than Ben.

It's the knee and the fact ben doesn't want to take hits. Now in the regular season maybe it's best that he does mitigate the risk.

Cleveland is the only franchise I would lose sleep over. They have the young talent and the cap space. Cincy doesn't like to spend money and has so far to go it's not even funny and Baltimore, IMO, doesn't have a franchise QB or the playmakers on offense. Let's face it, teams have figured out that Jackson isn't accurate.

The Steelers can fix the OL but they need the right coach in the room that can evaluate and work with young talent. FA issues are a constant in the league so you have to keep drafting talent. None of that matters if you can't adequately replace Ben so that's the determining factor. I think after 2021, your window with Ben closes so the franchise should already be thinking about it.

Fichtner is hot garbage. Ben did look horrible in the first half. But his arm look OK in the second half when they..................actually attempted to throw the ball further than 5 yards.......Changed the entire game as well as opened things up underneath for Connor.

Bens arm certainly isnt any worse than Rivers.

I agree with others who said the offense has looked much better in the hurry up with Ben calling the plays. They should do that all the time.

I was saying hurry up all the way back in weeks 2 and 3. This team has always lacked rhythm on offense and started games slow. Then they went hurry up in one of the games and found a way to win. So I figured they’d stay with it. But they didn’t do it again so I figured that maybe they were sandbagging the tactic until the playoffs. So who knows. At the time in the first part of the year, I thought the slow first half’s was due to Ben because he doesn’t practice enough. But while he shares in that blame, what does it say about a coordinator who can’t put together a scripted drive to start a game? Even the jets have scored on 6 straight opening game possessions. Maybe even 7 straight now.

You should have tried watching the second half of the Colts game when, after 14 and a half games, the Steelers actually tried to throw the ball down the field. Up till then I thought Ben was done. he proved me wrong. One big question looms over the Steelers now. Why? Why did it take so long to scrap that dink and dunk offense which ended up hamstringing them because the defenses were compressed in the throwing area? And a second why. Why is Randy Fichner still on the payroll?
