Some really good restaurant threads. Has anyone found any good Chicago style/deep dish pizza in the Pittsburgh area?

not deep dish... but a really good pizza people should try is a "Joe's" style pizza at montecello's in wexford. It is a thicker crust pizza with a ton of cheese on it. It is IMO the best pizza in Pittsburgh.

No. And we've been looking....

There was this obscure pizza joint on McKnight Road (now gone) that made a somewhat true Chicago-style (i.e. the sauce is last), but we have never found another place since then. Many advertise a deep dish, but it's not Chicago style.

With all due respect

I live in the Chicago area and find the Burgh's pizza to be superior.

Chicago deep dish pizza is basically a blob of dough and industrial, tasteless cheese. A triumph of bulk over quality. Eat one slice and you would think you swallowed a cannonball.

As a card- carrying Easterner I prefer a slice that I can fold. Chicago is moving in this direction against "pent up inertia".

When in the Burgh I hit Piccolo Forno if I want something remotely similar to what I get in Rome. But there are others. Enjoy what you have.

Re: With all due respect

I generally prefer foldable pizza too. But a deep dish pie can be great too. Just wondered if anyone knew of any in the region.

Montecello's in Wexford has a nice version.

Not the deepest crust, but good enough. I prefer a thin, crispy crust, though.

This isn't really a deep dish pizza, but Shelley's Pizza in Turtle Creek has slices and crust that have to be one of the thickest in the area. Add to that, the cheese and other toppings that are just so plentiful, it might as well be deep dish.

I like Sicilian style, thick crust. J&S in Natrona Heights is pretty good.

Been to Malnati's and some others in Chicago. It is good, it really is, but on the whole, I like the NY Style or even Pittsburgh style pizza over deep dish. Deep dish almost is more of a calzone.

As someone who's lived in Chicago for over a decade and frequently indulges in pizza, I could not disagree more with this comment. The regular pizza in Chicago is beyond awful. I spent years looking for some decent, every day pizza and have not found anything I would call more than OK. There are some OK places like Pequod's, but pizza should not be cut into squares. Ever. Chicago thin crust pizza is basically saltines with bland tomato sauce and mild cheese. If you like flavor, go someplace else.

However, the "deep dish," of which there are a few variations, is pretty good IMO. For stuffed, I like Giordano's. For the thick crust deep dish, I've found a place in the Western Suburbs called Barone's that's pretty damn good. The problem with this pizza, especially the stuffed, is you can't eat it frequently. The stuffed is like eating a brick of cheese with every slice. The deep dish is way too much crust. It's not an eat every week or two type of pizza. It's more like a quarterly indulgence.

Pittsburgh, NY, Boston, Philly, NJ - all have significantly better regular pizza. There is nothing in Chicago that can hold the jock strap of Mineo's, Fiori's, Aiello's and a few other Pgh mainstays. Not even close. The Chicago pizza reputation begins and ends with stuffed and deep dish in my opinion.

My advice if you're in Pgh? Celebrate what you've got. It's a lot better than most other places. I ship in Mineo's to Chicago often because I get sick of eating the crap out here.

Mineo's will actually ship it??

I live in NYC and can't complain but every now and then I truly crave Fiori's & Mineo's

Also recently did Primanti's through Goldbelly's...a little pricey (basically $30 per sandwich) but it comes out pretty solid.

It's a pain in the backside because they are cash-only, but they will ship it half-baked with dry ice. Easiest if you have someone in Pgh who can handle the purchase for you at the restaurant since it involves money orders remotely.

My only real complaint with Mineo's - they need to start accepting credit cards for take out orders, but the cash only policy is obviously not hurting their business.

We must eat at different pizza places, I guess, though you'll get no complaints from me that the square cut pizza is terrible.

The mention Mineo's and Aiello's literally has my mouth watering. I haven't had either in years. I'll have to stop by both places next fall, when I'm in town for Pitt games.

Caliente is very good. Their pepperoni has a great flavor.

Not sure why anyone likes deep dish? The crust is the worst part of pizza, why would I want more?

Burgh Pizza and Wing Pub in Bridgeville has a really good deep dish pizza. Good food as well.

Re: Beto's on Banksville Road

It may be an acquired taste but it doesn't take long to acquire it. Cheese, pepperoni etc. are tossed on, cold, right before the pizza is handed to you. One of the oldest pizza joints around these parts.

How is Caliente's in Bloomfield? I heard it is excellent (not talking about deep dish of course)
Caliente's is pretty good. Really good crust and nice amount of toppings but not in the same league as the heavyweights. Apizza Badamo in Mt lebanon is probably the best pizza I have had in Pittsburgh. I love Mineos but Badamo's is my new favorite.
