I think this is being underreported, partly because the Weather Channel and National News media can't get there if they weren't already there. But 3-4 feet of snow (another 8-12" on its way) 50+ mph winds, the same frigid temperatures we have. A true "blizzard" that has spanned 3 days. Mass power out outtages They are finding dead, frozen bodies all over the place in cars, houses, outside......I think the death toll just in the Buffalo area is over 30 and counting. All major roads closed. Airport been closed for 3 days and through tomorrow.

Just an incredible scenario that has been playing out without much fanfare. I vaguely remember their blizzards of 1977, they are saying this is much worse.

Prayers go out to those people. I can’t fathom living in Buffalo. It makes our winter weather seem like Paradise.

Yes, you're right. I saw a couple of mentions of it on the news yesterday. But nothing close to the coverage it deserves. I honestly don't know how anyone can live up there. Even the true native Buffalonians are not ready for this type of weather. It's sad and horrific. If the news media would cover real news like this half as much as they cover the silly political soap operas, they might regain back a sliver of their credibility.

They had that massive snow fall a few weeks ago. Dug out of it and got absolutely slammed 10x harder. We just played a team from Buffalo just before Christmas. They were down here in Tennessee playing us and were thrilled to be in warmer weather. Didn’t last long for them. There cannot be a single person in Buffalo who actually likes it there.

What makes this blizzard worse than the storm this received a couple weeks back with 5+ feet of snow? Is it the winds and temps?

I distinctly remember the Buffalo blizzard of ‘77. I thought they would never have to go through something that severe again but I was wrong.

Holidays are tremendously anticipated by the “backups” in both local and national news. The ones who are usually relegated to scrub work, editing others footage or doing tedious voiceovers, finally get their chance to “play”. So the news absolutely keeps happening on holidays, in fact often with more focus than the often tired, complacent everyday media hacks display.

I think the temps are definitely a lot lower this time around. And I’m not sure if they had as bad of power outages at the prior one.

It would be difficult to last long with these temps and no power unless you did some good advance preparation.

Like Pharm said, it’s been front page on Washington Post, NYT, Reuters, and AP for 2+ days now. You not seeing coverage says a lot about where you get your news.

I realize where you come from you’re not exposed to much, and you may not even have cable tv…but I assure you the news doesn’t stop. Networks continue to do their thing. The show does go on.

In related news, everything must be fine in Albany. I saw a news conference with a public official who shall go nameless, and the roads between her and her cosmetic surgeon must have been cleared nicely. Holy Botox overload!!
Even the national media takes time off at Christmas. National news would be relying on the local feeds from Buffalo for a story like this.

Ummmm...possibly 50 people dying???? Yes the winds and temp. The fact that Lake Erie rose 10 feet and had 20 feet waves crashing the coach. And the fact that that the death toll is mounting.

Okay, weather events, I go to the Weather Channel. They had people in Minneapolis and Michigan, but not Buffalo. How could they not see this coming? Maybe bored from covering the previous storm, but this set up so bad, that if news folks weren't there, they couldn't get there. All major roads and airports are closed.

Looters are destroying gas stations, making access to gas and services even worse. Sad.

Ummmm…you think maybe you misinterpreted his post/question? I think he’s wondering why so many are dying in this one compared to the last one a couple weeks ago.

Wind. Cold. Power Outages. Also....this one hit Buffalo downtown and the city. The last one was a bit south. This one hit their biggest traffic population areas hard and with the power outages and cars stuck and stranded and holiday weekend.......it was like literally the Perfect Storm.

Two 100mw farms north of Buffalo coming up. Late 23’. Maybe it will melt by then..

My question was asking why so many people are dying in this one compared to the previous storm. Thank you NCanton Panther for the assist.

I used to travel up there in the winter for work. They seem to only fall into a weather pattern like this once every 10-20 years and they really only get a reprieve when the lake freezes. Generally, they deal with it very well. They are very good at moving snow and a lot of places build underground tunnels to get around. University of Buffalo comes to mind. I do have to question how people still manage to get stuck on highways. It's not like the weather people weren't saying for a week or more that it would be a dangerous storm.

underground tunnels, i was at the University of North Dakota and they do the same. pretty cool. I heard the city of minneapolis does something similar but i've never been.

Used to spend time in Calgary and the city actually connects the buildings in downtown by 2nd level walkways. pretty much a large portion of their downtown is connected by what they call their indoor walkway system. Basically you can go to any building in downtown without going outside...

I can’t comment on tunnels, but Minneapolis has a “skyway” which is a set of pedestrian bridges that connects almost every downtown building together, similar to Calgary. Only been there once, but they were cool to access and seemed pretty convenient.

A savvy person can actually walk most of the way across Oakland this way if they know how to bounce from hospital to hospital. I'm only half kidding about that.

oh, got it. yeah, it's such a cool concept for someone who's never seen it before. Calgary. Here i am as a pitt student and thought it was cool that i could get from Trees to the Fieldhouse without going outside.

On this note, i did once go from 5th to Pitt stadium without stepping foot on DeSoto before a football game. you have to zig zag thru Presby, take a few doors, escalators and go thru Falk library but it's possible.

Takes about 3 xs longer and you get some weird looks walking thru a hospital with a case of beer

Actually Indianapolis has something similar.

Yeah, Minneapolis and the skyways. Several years ago, the City of Minneapolis did a nationwide search for its budget director position. They scheduled the interviews for January, I suppose to see what applicants were serious. (At the time, I was finance director for a Chicago suburb, so I didn't care.) The day of my interview, the high temperature was -3. Fortunately, the only time I was outside was when I was getting a cab from the airport..

How the . . . aside from how they're even getting to the gas stations to loot them, I wouldn't be venturing out at all in the first place. That's determination!

Or desperation. Nobody ever seems to consider that people could be cold and starving. It's not all that because they got the Cricket store, too, but I'm certain some of it is by people who are running out of supplies.

yeah, that's why looting exists lol. because they need those items.

You were getting weird looks because 4 out of 5 medical professionals abhor the taste of Old Milwaukee. ;)

Cold and starving? Seek help. There are shelters, relief.organizations, and good old fashioned government/tax payer assistance to help those.in need.

Breaking into stores and looting= you're a scumbag.

Those things are pretty hard to access after the storm and temperatures they just had.

Police ar

Police are saying the looting has been for non essential items. Attached are two desperate, starving Buffalo citizens just trying to stay alive...

I mean those of us who know Buffalo, I know these roads and streets. Where I usually stay up there got hit the hardest this time. This isn't like in the mountains where sometimes you see scenes like this in the Sierra Nevada's or even in Upstate NY. These scenes would be like from the equivalent of McKnight Rd in the North Hills or the Parkways.
