OT: Dog’s Man’s Best Friend And Cat’s or Other Family Pets

We recently had to put down our dog. I grew up with GSP’s and Dobermans. But the Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier our Callie that we had to say goodbye to was the best dog I have ever had. What say you?
My sympathy to you and your family. My 11 year old Bassett hound-schnauzer mix is in failing health. I try to cherish every day she has left with us.
I never had a dog growing up. We've had dogs for 20 years and I will never be without a dog.

Weird you posted this . My 3 year old Zoey , a mini Pinser/Jack Russell was recently killed by a pit bull . Poor baby was just full of nothing but love ....
She would have turned 4 February 18th. Had a little party planned ....
Still grieving so I know what you're feeling . So sorry man ..

Best dog I ever had was our Chow/Pomeranian mix as a kid (Ok, it was my sister's, I never had one of my own). I'm going to get a dog when our elder cats are deceased, I can't wait. I think I'm going to go with a non-puppy (but young) shelter dog. We shall see. Its just me now when the kids aren't around and I figure a dog would be better company than cats, lol.

It was her time, she had a stroke she was 12. I never knew a dog could have a stroke. Sorry for what is going on with your hound. I am sorry because you want to wait one more day and balance the dogs comfort. We were lucky in that my best friend is an Anesthesiologist so he was able to put her down in our home and in her own bed. I am trying to imagine what your dog would look like got to be one one a kind. Probably beautiful. Good luck. We will get another Wheaton.

Maybe sometimes divine intervention occurs and I am not a religious person. True story my grandfather’s best friend was like a third grandfather to me. Anyway both families traced their togetherness from leaving Scotland in 1675 to their time in Punxsutawney. I was a mistake my siblings and cousins were all much older than me so I was like an only child and was treated differently. With that as the back down Wallis, the third grandfather had a son my father’s age. One summer vacation the son asked Wallis to take care of the dog, the dog runs onto the street gets hit by a car. Wallis thinks the dg is dead and throws it into the furnace. His son’s family comes On my way! Everyone feels bad. His son gets another dog, next summer same accident happens but this time Wallis puts an ice pack on the dog’s head and the dogs wakes up. On his dead bed when I was speaking to him he worried that he killed the first dog. They mean a lot to us.

We ended up putting our 14 year old papillon and 19 year old torty cat down on the same day. the pup was too sick from congestive heart issues and never really had a moment of comfort. She was still a wonderful dog even being sick. The cat had lost a ton of weight and was just super old. I could pick her up with one finger. Had an in home euthanasia performed by a vet. It was both comforting and absolutely devastating. We soon thereafter adopted a calico who has some sass but is getting more comfortable. Also about six weeks ago adopted a lab corgi mix. 13 years old so he doesn’t have many years with us. But he is a pleasant guy. A bit of a chunk but so easy going. The new pets have made it easier but not easy to have lost two long terms pets.

Did you sue? File a complaint? That is not right that one dog kill another dog. I am sorry for you and your family.

Certainly the golden age of dogs! We have not had a dog since our Dalmatian passed away years ago but 4 of our 5 sons have dogs so we get our fix without the upkeep. Sorry about your dog!

The owner of the dog recently moved in with a pos registered chid molester .
It has been heard he has associations with a local scumbag motorcycle club that are mixed up with drugs and violence . I have connections with local police and they are aware of the situation . Other than that I feel it's just safe for me and my family to leave it at that . Sucks , But ....

Sympathies to those that have recently lost a furry family member. Whether by having to put one down or losing to a tragic event, it is still very painful to most. I have an 8 year old male and a 5 year old female, both chiweenies. The male looks more combo while the female looks all daschy. The personality and love they bring to our lives is priceless. Thanks for sharing. I know it helps.

Screw it . I know it's a somber thread but wth .
Not at all it is a celebration of our pets. They bring brought joy to our lives. As a kid the GSP’s were my friends. They were crazy and yet gentle. Callie the dog we just said good bye to was protecting the back yard against urban invaders foxes deer etc.. She was a beautiful dog/pet as all of our pets are

While reading this thread, I forgot I left the side door open. Jenny RooRoo snuck out. I suspected she would be back in the thick bushes out back. But I'm an expert. I crunched a Dorito on the back porch and she popped up like whack a mole. I'm cooking on the grill, so she won't go anywhere now. I make a special burger just for her. She won't leave my side now, unless mama comes home lol.

It was that pungent Dorito odor that caught her liking .... The rest was you surrendering the chip .. Dog's can be so cool , yet so stupid ..... Lol.

There is something poetic about cooking on the grill and the dog. It is caveman

Yeah. I get what you mean . It's like . You're outside , not in the kitchen . Flames are going. Out in the fresh air . And then there she is .. Camped out right between your legs . Ready to devour any morsel you happen to lose off your spatula !! Lol ...

Nothing better then giving the dog the steak bone. Their attack and joy is so entertaining. Unlike giving your children gifts hoping they like them (all the gifts my children got they were happy). But with the dog the steak bone was pure happiness.

I hope you mean an uncooked bone. Giving a dog a cooked bone is very very dangerous. Cooked bones shatter and splinter and can cause damage from their mouth to internal organs.

Ironically we put our 19 year 4 month old Jack Russell named Lily down last Friday. It was a horrible experience, but it was her time.
The vet had candles, and a soft blanket waiting for her. She went quickly. She will be waiting for us at the end of the rainbow bridge.
We were a basket case, but each day gets a little better.
This thread is such a coincidence. Thanks for letting me share our story.

Meh.. Depends on the dog ... Then again , I never ever knew a dog that couldn't tackle a good old smoked , cooked juicy steak bone ....
My Zoey had the teeth the size of a healthy sewer rat yet she could destroy one ... Just sayin...

It was one of the toughest things I ever had to do but I had to do it.Seeing it actually happen made made it even worse.I know it isn’t easy.Sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately, its not a very well known danger but it is 100% a legitimate risk. If a dog has enough bite strength to break the bone, damaged could be caused from the shards.

One of the hardest things I ever had to do was put down my Rottie who was 9 years old. Mentally, he was sharp as a tack but developed a tumor on his elbow and had another on his armpit. Taking him to the vet that day and seeing how he thought he was getting his nails done with such a carefree spirit was torture. I had him from the time he was 6 weeks old. We did everything together. He was a true family member.

We had about a 8 year break before getting another dog. Now I have a pitbull rescue. He's 2.5 years old. We've had him since he's been 6 months. He's probably the most lovable dog I've ever been around. He literally lives vicariously though us. He thinks he's a tough guy but he's not. He barks and growls at the wind but will hide under a bed.

We have a whippet border collie mix. Great dog. People without dogs do not realize they are part of the family. We love them and grieve when they pass. So very sorry for your loss.

I've had 3 dogs since I was a kid, all lived full lives. I honestly can't pick a favorite as all had different traits that made them special to me.

- Border Collie/ Golden Retriever Mix - 16
- Schnauzer/Bassett Hound Mix - 15
- Schnauzer/Beagle Mix -16

Probably going to get another dog when the time is right...

Thank you I never knew. I will keep that in mind for the future

gee, just put down our yellow lab Callie a couple weeks ago..what are the odds? They say getting a puppy is a down payment on a heartache...hard to disagree with that.

I am sorry. If that happened to me, I may have killed the dog's owner and certainly would have killed the dog without remorse and hopefully in front of their kids.

I got the two greatest dogs. They are hilarious. But yeah, the one I lost in 2017 she was special. Amazing, one now that I have, I swear to god she is her reincarnated.

Here's something I realized from having dogs all my life. Everyone thinks children take the loss of a pet the hardest that is not true. Kids are resilient and have so much going on in their lives, they get over it quickly.

Adults with kids, same thing. Because obviously your kids take precedence. But when you become an adult who's kids have grown up and moved out, or you don't have kids, your dogs become your kids as far as attention goes and that wonderful innocent happiness that they show every time they see you. This is when the loss of a pet is the hardest.
